ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the experience of families facing cancer in palliative care of one of its members. Method: this is a qualitative research based on the theoretical-methodological framework of Grounded Theory. Six families participated, totaling 15 people. Data were collected from January to December 2019 in the homes of families in a municipality in southern Brazil, through an in-depth interview with the construction of a genogram. Analysis followed the constant comparative method steps: open, selective and theoretical coding. Results: the concepts discovering cancer; suffering with the reality imposed by the illness; preparing to face illness; deciding on treatment; facing the finitude of life, they are part of the central category “Living one day at a time”, which symbolically defines families’ experiences. The substantive theory elaborated shows that the definitions, actions and strategies adopted by families, in family dynamics and in interpersonal interactions, along a trajectory that culminates in the terminality of a relative’s life, is permeated by hope maintenance. Conclusion: throughout the illness experience, families promote changes in their daily lives and in family dynamics, undergoing adaptations and using their internal strengths in an attempt to re-establish the balance prior to the disease. Families live with uncertainty about the future, but it is the hope that drives them to live one day at a time.

ABSTRACT Objetive: Describing the theoretical sampling process in the development of a Grounded Theory based on the Straussian strand. The objective of the field research, used as an example, was to develop a substantive theory, based on the theoretical framework of Symbolic Interactionism, about the perceptions and experiences of patients, family members, and health professionals regarding the presence of the family during emergency care. Method: In the theoretical sampling, 42 participants were recruited, divided into nine sample groups, constituted based on the constant comparative method. Results: The description of this example allowed to identify how theoretical sampling guided data collection, which occurred through the in-depth study of concepts and the search for answers to questions arising from the data. Final Considerations: It is expected that the readers find subsidies to understand how theoretical sampling is conducted in a Grounded Theory study, based on the Straussian strand, and thus be able to apply it.

Objectives: Clinical use of the creative arts in palliative care is well established, yet there are few evaluation studies of these programs. Methods: In this first phase of a 3-phase evaluation of a creative arts program entitled “Tile Tales,” we conducted a retrospective thematic analysis of 85 painted tiles and accompanying stories that were publically displayed on a tertiary palliative care unit. Each story was independently coded, using content analysis. Themes were derived through consensus, using the constant comparative method. Results: Tiles were created by staff (n = 36, 42%), family (n = 32, 38%), patients (n = 9, 11%), or patients and family (n = 8, 9%). Six major themes emerged from the artwork: “Spirituality,” “Relationships,” “Journey,” “Story,” “Symbolism,” and “Paradox.” Significance of Results: These results illustrate how the creative arts can support the expression of diverse palliative care experiences, for patients, their families and palliative care staff, when words alone may not suffice.

This research study explores the experience of first-generation immigrants of Mexican origin living in Denver, CO. Seven Mexican immigrants described their experiences through an in-depth interview process. The data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. The process described by the participants reflects ambivalence about living in the United States. This ambivalence stems from a conflict between their beliefs that the United States is the land of opportunity and their experiences of being unable to access opportunities because of their identity as immigrants—regardless of immigration status.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the needs and experiences of Chinese families where grandparents were involved in the non-custodial care of their grandchildren. Design/methodology/approach – In total five grandparent focus groups and three parent focus groups were conducted. The data were analysed using the constant comparative method. Findings – Though most grandparents enjoyed their grandparent roles, there were differences in the perception of the grandparent role between grandparents and parents. Both grandparents and parents reported intergenerational conflicts on the management of the grandchildren, which was distressing for both parties. Practical implications – It was suggested that grandparent training programmes might be a viable strategy to support families. Originality/value – The study provided insights into family dynamics in the context of grandparent caregiving, child development, as well as children's services.

This paper aimed to investigate the implementation of inquiry-based learning (IBL) in English teaching at candidate school of International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) in Surakarta and explore the benefits of its implementation in English teaching. Three English teachers at a candidate school of IB PYP in Surakarta participated in this study and they were chosen purposively. This research employed a qualitative approach and emphasized on a case study. The techniques for collecting data comprised in-depth interview and observation. The collected data were analyzed by the researchers through Constant Comparative Method (CCM). The results revealed that the implementation of inquiry-based learning in English teaching in this school used Bruce and Davidson's view and some features of IBL. That cycles involved asking, investigating, creating, discussing and reflecting. And the benefits of this method in English teaching based on IB PYP were 1) the teachers can create meaningful activities for the students, 2) teaching and learning were student-centered, 3) the students learn through language and get endurable understanding, and 4) it promotes students ’skills and attitude at teamwork.

Despite the large number of theories regarding illness and dying, there is an absence of theoretical work that follows the trajectory from the onset of illness to death. This qualitative study expanded the illness constellation model to include the experience of dying. Following unstructured interviews with 41 individuals (15 ill individuals receiving palliative care, 13 family members of individuals receiving palliative care, and 13 palliative care nurses), data were transcribed and analyzed using NUD*IST 4.0 and the constant comparative method. Until they begin to experience rapid physical deterioration, the response of individuals receiving palliative care to illness is remarkably similar to the experience of other ill individuals. As the ability to maintain self-integrity is lost, however, ill individuals enter a new phase (enduring to die), characterized by progressive withdrawal, not previously outlined in the illness constellation model.

BackgroundPracticing perimenopausal health promotion is an important key stage for the healthy life of the coming elderly. However, there are few studies conducted on these women's subjective health concerns. Getting insight into their health concerns can help women implement their own health promotion lives.AimsThe goal is to generate data from the in-depth interview for perimenopausal women based on their perceptions, beliefs, values, and feelings regarding perimenopausal women’s subjective health concerns. Methods:The qualitative research by using content analysis was applied. In-depth interviews were conducted with 19 perimenopausal women with a mean age of 51.31 years. The constant comparative method was used to analyze the interview data.ResultsTwo themes and their subthemes were identified: (a) “Evaluating Health” - “Suspecting a menopausal disease or illness”, “Easily feel tired, lack energy, and feel not as strong as before”, “Worried about my abnormal physiological data” and (b) “Remaining Young” – “Worried that I lost my female characteristics and reproductive function”, “Weight loss is the focus of life, but it is not easy to achieve.”Conclusion“Evaluating Health” and “Remaining Young” are two health concerns for perimenopausal women. It is crucial for health providers to advocate these two concerns as slogans for perimenopausal health promotion women.

This study aimed to explore how autistic children form the lives of people who were raising them through life stories shared by caregivers. The research participants included 11 Vietnamese caregivers who were taking care of children diagnosed with autism. A preliminary interview prior to the study was conducted to determine caregivers who would participate in the research and in-depth interviews were carried out with volunteer caregivers. To determine aspects of life stories that shape caregivers’ lives, the study implemented the "Life Story Interview" list. Grounded theory and the constant comparative method, effective research strategies were used to collect and analyze the data. Interviews were conducted in the Vietnamese language. As a result, 6 broad categories of themes were identified related to caregivers’ life stories: (1) psychological consultation, (2) emotions, (3) worries, (4) duties, (5) essential virtues, and (6) hopes. Analyses exposed that although caregivers whose children were autistic underwent a wide range of challenges in their daily lives and had concerns for the future of children, they did a big shot to reorganize their family lives, required themselves highly, and never stopped hoping for a better life.
