Abstract Objective: To evaluate the clinical-functional vulnerability index (CFVI) of older adults and its relationship with socioeconomic, behavioral, clinical and therapeutic indicators. Method: A cross-sectional epidemiological study with a quantitative design was performed with 318 randomly drawn older adults registered with the Family Health Strategy. Data were collected through the CFVI-20 questionnaire and analysis was supported by descriptive, bivariate and multivariate statistics, with results with p-value <0.05 considered significant. Results: most older adults (59.1%) were considered frail or potentially frail. Among the groups studied, there was a statistically significant difference in the CFVI for the variables age group (p<0.001), functional literacy (p=0.001), alcohol consumption (p<0.001), physical exercise (p<0.001), self-reported health problems (p<0.001) and medication use (p<0.001), as well as a positive correlation with stress (r=0.135; p=0.016). In the multiple linear regression model, the set of sociodemographic predictor variables explained the frailty of the elderly by 30.4% (R2=0.304). Conclusions: The advancement of age, as a non-controllable variable, indicates a need to encourage the maintenance of functionality in old age, based on the health care strategies that prolong longevity with safety, autonomy and vitality.

Abstract Objective : To evaluate functional dependence among older adults receiving care from Family Health Strategy (FHS) teams, in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil, identifying associated factors. Methods : A cross-sectional and analytical study with randomly selected older adults was performed. The instrument used was BOMFAQ (the Brazilian Older Americans Resources and Services Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire). Data collection was performed by trained staff in the homes of the older adults. Sociodemographic, economic data, living habits, health care, morbidities and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) were evaluated. In addition to descriptive analysis, factors associated with functional dependence were identified using the chi-square test, followed by hierarchical multiple analysis using Poisson regression with robust variance. Results : 1,750 older adults were evaluated. The group was predominantly female, with low schooling. The proportion of the sample considered dependent was 57.0%. The variables associated with functional dependence were: female gender (PR=1.19); age ≥70 years (PR=1.33); schooling ≤4 years (PR=1.19); being unemployed (PR=1.43); not performing physical activity (PR=1.19) or walking (PR=1.15); not listening to the radio as a leisure activity (PR=1.13); not having the habit of reading (PR=1.17); presenting depressive symptoms (PR=1.15); hospitalization in the last six months (PR=1.18); cognitive impairment (PR=1.16); insomnia (PR=1.13); obesity (PR=1.18); falls in the last year (PR=1.11); cataracts (PR=1.09), spinal problems (PR=1.19); urinary incontinence (PR=1.25); poor circulation (PR=1.09) and a negative self-perception of health (PR=1.22). Conclusion : Functional dependence is multifactorial, but is influenced mainly by the health conditions of older adults.

This study aimed to identify the satisfaction of the elderly population in relation to the health care received in the Family Health Strategy, in Santa Cruz, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. It is a descriptive quantitative study, with a sample of 101 older adults registered in the municipality's family health system. The data were collected between May and September 2011, using a structured questionnaire, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. It was observed that 67.3% of the interviewees were satisfied with the assistance received, and 72.3% were satisfied with the advice received. In relation to scheduling, waiting times and time spent in the consultations, many were dissatisfied (62.4%, 54.5% and 70.3% dissatisfaction, respectively). We conclude that, in spite of the majority of older adults being satisfied with this care, it is necessary to improve the attendance, particularly in the flow of requests for consultations in the units studied.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the prevalence and factors associated with falls in the elderly population living in rural areas. Method: this is a cross-sectional study, carried out in 2014, with 820 older adults recorded in the Family Health Strategy (Estratégia Saúde da Família). The association between the reporting of falls in 12 months and their associated factors was verified by the Chi-square and Fischer’s exact tests and by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: the majority of the sample was female (56.1%), white (90.2%) and aged 60-69 years (54.9%). The prevalence of falls was 27.9%, and being female, hypertensive and diabetic was associated to falls. Conclusion: it is the responsibility of health professionals to have a closer look at the elderly who have these chronic diseases, especially within the scope of the Family Health Strategy, which works longitudinally with these patients, in addition to improving nursing care aimed at this population.

Abstract Objective: to identify the medication profile, the prevalence of polypharmacy and associated factors among elderly people receiving care from Family Health Strategy teams. Method: an analytical, document-based, cross-sectional survey with a quantitative approach was conducted in Brazlândia in the Distrito Federal, Brazil, with a sample of 211 elderly people enrolled in and receiving care from one of the local Family Health Strategy teams. Data were submitted to bivariate analysis and multiple analysis through logistic regression. Results: a considerable number of the elderly (62, 29.4%) were undergoing polypharmacy. The majority (56, 26.5%) used three different classes of drug, with antihypertensive drugs the most used. Diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular complications and the use of antihypertensive drugs were factors associated with polypharmacy. Conclusion: polypharmacy is a worrying reality and demands a new approach on the part of professionals, as this important aspect of geriatrics should be carefully evaluated to avoid harm and iatrogeny among the elderly.

We analyzed prenatal care (PN) provided at a unit of the Family Health Strategy Service in São Paulo, according to the indicators of the Program for the Humanization of Prenatal and Birth (PHPB). We compared adequacy of PN in terms of sociodemographic variables, procedures, examinations and maternal and perinatal outcomes. Cross-sectional study with data from records of 308 pregnant women enrolled in 2011. We observed early initiation of PN (82.1%), conducting of a minimum of six consultations (84.1%), puerperal consultation (89.0%); to the extent that there is a sum of the actions, there is a significant drop in the proportion of adequacy. Prenatal care was adequate for 67.9%, with a significant difference between adequacy groups in relation to gestational age and birth weight. Prenatal care deficiencies exist, especially in regards to registration of procedures, exams and immunization. The difference between adequacy groups with respect to perinatal outcomes reinforces the importance of prenatal care that adheres to the parameters of the PHPB.
