ABSTRACT Objective: To verify the prevalence of violence among elderly community members and its relationship with nutritional status and sociodemographic characteristics. Method: Cross-sectional and analytical study developed with 159 community elderly registered at a Family Health Unit in Recife/Pernambuco between March 2016 and March 2017. The Brazil Old Age Schedule, Conflict Tactics Scales and Mini Nutritional Assessment were used as data collection instruments. Data received descriptive and inferential statistical treatment. Results: Among the elderly classified as with violence, there was a predominance of psychological violence (64.3%), and the majority were at risk for malnutrition (54.3%). There was an association between ‘having a partner’ and psychological (48.1%; p=0.02) and physical (48.1%; p=0.03) violence. Logistic regression demonstrated that being in a relationship or being malnourished increases the likelihood of suffering psychological violence (OR=2.63; OR=3.67), just as not being working increases the likelihood of physical violence (OR=5.61). Conclusion: Violence was negatively related to the nutritional status of elderly community members.

Abstract Objective Nutritional assessment can early identify patients who are malnourished and at risk of malnutrition. To examine the effect of nutritional status on wound healing in elderly burn patients, we used the MNA-SF to measure the nutritional status of elderly patients. This study aimed to examine the role of MNA-SF in elderly burn patients through the correlation analysis of wound-healing indicators and MNA-SF score. Design Prospective observational and cross-sectional study. Methods This study used the MNA-SF to investigate the elderly burn patients at the department of burn. According to the score, the patients fell into three groups: good nutritional status (more than 12 points), malnutrition risk (8~11 points), and malnutrition (0~7 points). At the same time, we measured and compared the wound-healing indicators among the three groups of patients, and detected the correlation. Results The statistical analysis found gender had a slight influence on the score of nutritional status. While age was negatively correlated with the MNA-SF score and nutrition-related indicators. There was a low positive linear correlation between the wound healing percent area change or wound healing rate of patients and the score of the MNA-SF. Conclusion This study finds malnutrition is common among hospitalized elderly burn patients. The application of the MNA-SF in elderly burn patients is efficient and accurate to identify malnutrition early and prevent further obstruction of the normal wound healing, which can provide reference points for early nutrition intervention programs.

Background: Worldwide the elderly population gradually increasing and that will definitely pose several challenges. Malnutrition is one of the major but neglected problem in elderly. They are at risk of malnutrition due to physical, psychological, social, dietary and environmental risk factors. Malnutrition in elderly is associated with adverse health effects. Hence to study the nutritional status of elderly.Methods: The study was carried out between January 2016- June 2017. 545 elderly were included in the study. Out of the 6 subcentres, 1 subcentre (Uchagaon) was selected by simple random sampling technique and house to house survey was carried out to select eligible elderly participants in the villages of selected subcentre. Data was collected from eligible elderly by using mini nutritional assessment (MNA) tool.Results: Majority of the participants (65.1%) were between the age group of 60-69 years. 55% were females. 23.5% were malnourished, 49% were at risk of malnutrition and 27.5% had normal nutritional status.Conclusions: The present study concluded that majority of the elderly were at risk of malnutrition. There is a need of actions to improve the nutritional status of the elderly.

Malnutrition, or under nutrition, is a frequent and often unrecognized problem in older adults. It can result in immune dysfunction; poor wound healing, anaemia, longer hospitalization and higher readmission rates, delayed recovery from surgery and a higher rate of mortality. Current statistics for the elderly in India gives a prelude to a new set of medical, social, and economic problems that could arise if a timely initiative in this direction is not taken by the program managers and policy makers. A community based observational, descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the elderly people residing at Banspole sub-centre area to nd out their nutritional status. Geriatric people who were the permanent resident of the study area for at least six months were included in the study. A proforma was used to collect the baseline information of the study subjects and details of factors inuencing nutrition status. Mini nutritional assessment (MNA) tool was used to assess nutritional status of 2 elderly. 300 elderly patients were included in this study with an average age of 77.29 ± 6.97 years and BMI of 23.67 ± 3.49 kg/m . Age, literacy and nancial status were found to be signicantly associated with malnutrition. Geriatric nutritional assessment should be integrated into a comprehensive geriatric assessment. Regular assessment of the nutritional status among elderly followed by early interventions will improve the health outcomes, prevents the onset of disability, improves quality of life and saves healthcare costs.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to evaluate the nutritional status associated with dysphagia, and compare the calorie and protein intake of dysphagic elderly patients to that of non dysphagic ones, during hospitalization. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study with elderly people ranging from 60 to 80 years old admitted as inpatients in a medical and neurological clinic of a public hospital. They formed two groups, according to the presence of dysphagia: dysphagic and non dysphagic ones. The inclusion criteria were: dysphagia secondary to stroke and exclusive oral feeding. Anthropometric measurements and the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were applied. The 24-hour recall was used to analyze food consumption. The statistical analysis used the Fisher's exact test for the association of variables, and the Mann-Whitney test, for their comparison. Results: a total of 12 elderly people participated, whose mean age was 70.50 ± 7.77 years in the dysphagia group (n = 6), and 72.67 ± 5.01 years in the non dysphagia group (n = 6).There was an association between the presence of dysphagia and the risk of malnutrition, according to MNA (p = 0.028). No significant difference in calorie and protein intake was seen between the groups. The group with dysphagia had a lower water intake as compared to the non dysphagia group (p = 0.045). Conclusion: dysphagia was associated with the risk of malnutrition and lower fluid intake in dysphagic patients, thus, increasing their risk of dehydration.

Abstract Background: Institutionalized elderly has been reported to poorer oral health status and this could compromise the general health of those individuals. Objective: To evaluate the influence of tooth loss and the use of removable dentures on chewing function and nutritional status of institutionalized elderly. Methodology: Cross-sectional study with 155 elderly from seven long-stay institutions in João Pessoa - PB, from December 2018 to August 2019. The elderly were classified according to the presence of reminesncent teeth and use of dentures in four levels: toothless, without denture (1); toothless with complete denture (2); partial toothless without denture (3) and partial toothless with partial denture (4). Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) instrument and the Body Mass Index (BMI). Swallowing threshold was used for assessment of masticatory function, using a portion of roasted peanuts (3,7g). Comparisons among groups were performed using Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni adjustment, considering p<0.05. Results: MNA (p = 0.702) and BMI (p = 0.884) were not modified in relation to the presence of teeth and denture use. Toothless individuals without dentures had lower swallowing threshold (p <0.001), whilst partial toothless with dentures had better masticatory function (p>0.05). Conclusion: The presence of reminiscent teeth and the use of dentures do not influence the nutritional status of the elderly, but interfere with the masticatory function. Prosthetic rehabilitation is desirable for complete toothless individuals.

AbstrakPeningkatan Usia Harapan Hidup (UHH) penduduk Indonesia mengakibatkan peningkatan populasi usia lanjut (usila). Peningkatan usila berdampak terutama pada peningkatan angka ketergantungan dalam melakukan Aktivitas Kehidupan Sehari-hari (AKS). Penurunan tingkat kemandirian dalam melakukan AKS adalah salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi status gizi usila. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan hubungan tingkat kemandirian dalam melakukan AKS dan status gizi usia lanjut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian analitik observasional dengan rancangan cross-sectional study dan menggunakan kuisioner ADL Barthel dan Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) sebagai instrumen. Sebanyak 66 sampel diambil dari seluruh penghuni Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Sabai Nan Aluih Sicincin yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi. Data berupa hasil tingkat kemandirian dan status gizi dianalisis menggunakan uji chi-square, dengan derajat kepercayaan 95%. Dari 66 subjek penelitian terdapat 36 usila (54,5%) tidak mandiri dalam melakukan AKS dan  39 usila (59,1%) memiliki status gizi berisiko malnutrisi. Uji chi-square menunjukkan nilai p adalah 0,015 (p<0,05). Kesimpulan penelitian adalah terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara tingkat kemandirian dalam melakukan AKS dan status gizi pada usia lanjut di Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Sabai Nan Aluih Sicincin.Kata kunci: tingkat kemandirian, aktivitas kehidupan sehari-hari, status gizi, usia lanjut AbstractThe increasing of life expectancy at Indonesia's population may lead to an increase in the elderly population. The main impact of this condition is the increasing of elderly dependency in performing Activity of Daily Living (ADL). Decreased level of independence in performing ADL is one of the factors that affect the nutritional status of elderly. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the level of independence in performing ADL and nutritional status of elderly.This research was an observational analytical study which designed as cross-sectional study. The instruments of this research were Barthel ADL and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). 66 samples were taken from all the inhabitants of Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Sabai Nan Aluih Sicincin who fulfill the inclusion criteria. The results of the level of independence and nutritional status were analyzed using chi-square test, with a degree of confidence of 95%. Of the 66 subjects there were 36 elderly (54.5%) not independent in performing ADL and 39 elderly (59.1%) were at risk of malnutrition. Chi-square test showed p value 0,015 (p<0.05).The conclusion is the significant relationship between the level of independence in performing ADL and nutritional status of the elderly in Social House Tresna Werdha Sabai Nan Aluih. Abstract Background Malnutrition is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Malnutrition increases the number of hospitalizations and prolongs the length of hospitalization by disrupting organ functions, increasing the number and severity of infections and delaying wound healing. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of suspected malnutrition in the elderly, to examine some related variables and to evaluate the depression. Methods The study is a cross-sectional study conducted between March-April 2019 in individuals aged 60 years and older living in Sivrihisar. Sample size was calculated as 579. Cluster sampling method used. Data was collected by door to door in 4 neighborhoods determined by randomly. Mini Nutritional Assessment Test-Short Form (for malnutrition), Katz Daily Living Activities Scale (for dependency) and Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (for depression) were used. Chi-square test, Mann Whitney U test and logistic regression analysis were used for the analyzes. Results The study group consisted of 220 (38%) women and 359 (62%) men. The mean age was 68.9±6.4 (ranged 60-93). Frequency of suspected malnutrition was 25% (n = 145). Being 80 years of age or older (OR:3.24, CI:1.53-6.85), having a primary and lower education level (OR:2.54, CI:1.32-4.90), history of chronic illness (OR:2.34, CI:1.33-4.03), using dentures (OR:1.62, CI:1.03-2.55) and suspected depression (OR:4.97, CI:3.17-7.78) are important risk factors for malnutrition. Those with suspicion of malnutrition had lower scores on DLA (z = 8.982;p=0.001). Conclusions Malnutrition was found to be an important health problem for the elderly. The frequency of suspected malnutrition is higher in individuals with depression. Those with suspected malnutrition have higher level of dependency. In order to reduce the frequency of malnutrition, it may be beneficial to increase the awareness of the elderly and caregivers and to give importance to the elderly nutrition of primary health care providers. Key messages Depression is an important risk factor for malnutrition. Malnutrition increases the dependence of the individual on daily activities.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of undernutrition in older adults aged >75 years living in communities and to identify the main factors independently associated with undernutrition. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a random sample of family physicians' medical records of 86 older adults aged >75 years living in the community studied. Their nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment. RESULTS: A total of 10.5% of the elderly were undernourished and 41.9% were at undernutrition risk. According to the logistic regression multivariable model, the following characteristics: being widowed (OR=6.7; 95%CI=1.8-24.6); being institutionalized (OR=12.6; 95%CI=1.7-90.5); or having a negative self-perception of health (OR=15.0; 95%CI=3.3-69.1) were independently associated with a significant increase of undernutrition risk. CONCLUSION: The current study shows that undernutrition is highly prevalent in Portuguese older adults aged >75 years living in communities. The major factors independently associated with their undernutrition are being widowed and institutionalized and having negative self-perception of health. The results obtained show that undernutrition and its associated factors are very serious problems for older adults and a challenge in their health care.

Malnutrition in the older adult is an ongoing situation in Mexico and is most apparent in individuals that reside in hospitals, nursing homes, and retirement homes. For that reason, it is necessary to evaluate the nutritional status of these adults by means of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and levels of three serum indicators that are commonly ordered when making malnutrition diagnosis. An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out on 100 older adults residing in eldercare facilities. Nutritional status was evaluated by means of the MNA and three serum indicators (albumin, ferritin, and hemoglobin). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze sociodemographic characteristics, and a Student’s t test, based on gender and reference values, was used to compare mean values of the three serum indicators.  A Chi-square test was used to compare proportions in individuals, based on gender, who had normal nutritional status or were malnourished, and who were at-risk of malnutrition.  A One-way ANOVA with Scheffé post hoc test was used to identify the association between serum indicators and nutritional status of older adults. Of the 100 older adults studied, 53% were men and 47% were women. The mean age was 85±0.7 years. According to the MNA, 20% had normal nutritional status, 55% were at-risk of malnutrition, and 25% were malnourished. The mean indicator values were: albumin 4.7±0.04 g/dL, ferritin 74.2±8.7 ng/mL, and hemoglobin 13.0±0.1 g/dL. No significant association was found between serum indicators and each MNA classification; however, when the same indicators were compared between the sexes, hemoglobin showed a significant difference (P=0.037). Women had lower values but those values did not extend beyond the established physiological range for this population. There was a 55% prevalence of risk of malnutrition in the nutritional status of older adults living in Mexican eldercare facilities in a Mexican province and it was even more frequent in women.

ABSTRACT: Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition risk and its association with socioeconomic, behavioral, and health characteristics in the community-dwelling elderly. Methods: A cross-sectional study with individuals aged ≥ 60 years. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment. Socioeconomic, behavioral, and health information was also collected from all participants. The association between each variable and the risk of malnutrition was calculated and adjusted using Poisson hierarchical regression. Results: The initial sample consisted of 3,101 elderly people, of whom 28.3% (95%CI 25.3 - 31.4%) were at risk of malnutrition. The multivariate analysis showed that the risk of malnutrition was significantly higher in women without formal education, who did not live with a partner, and identified as black-skinned. The risk of malnutrition was twice as high in individuals with no family income as compared to those who earned at least three minimum wages. Smokers were also more likely to be at risk of malnutrition than individuals who had never smoked. Participants suffering from kidney, respiratory or heart disease were at higher risk of malnutrition than those with no history of such illnesses. Conclusion: These findings could be used to help in the development of health policies and in the establishment of adequate programs aimed at reducing the risk of malnutrition in this population.
