ABSTRACT The use of nitrogenous fertilizer coated by polymers may reduce losses caused by volatilization, thus exposing this element to plants for a longer period of time. The objective of this work was to evaluate the residual effects of nitrogen in the form of conventional urea and urea coated by polymers in the production components and grain productivity of the first and second corn crops. The experiment was conducted in Selvíria - MS in a clay-type Oxisol during the corn crops of 2011/12 and 2012. The experiment was arranged as a randomized block design with four replications, with a factorial 4 x 4 treatment arrangement as follows: 4 doses of N (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1) and 4 forms of urea (conventional urea and urea coated by three different polymers). Treatments were applied at the time of corn sowing in the first season (2010/11) and second season (2011). The residual effects of nitrogen fertilization in the corn grown in the first crop season (2011/12) and the second crop season (2012) were then assessed. The polymer -coated urea did not differ compared to the conventional urea.

The randomized block design in a 6 x 4 + 1 factorial arrangement was used, with six N rates (28.75, 57.50, 115.00, 172.50, 230.00, 287.50 kg ha-1 of N), with the use of polymer-coated urea, and four nutrient application ways (100% of the transplant rate, 50% at the transplant + 50% at the 10 days after the transplant (DAT), 25% at the transplant + 75% at 10 days DAT, 25% at transplant + 25% at each side dressing fertilization at 10, 20 and 30 DAT). The additional treatment was related to the recommended N fertilization using conventional urea. N, P, K, Ca and Mg, total and commercial yield, stem diameter, plant height and head diameter were determined at 30 and 60 days after transplant. Nitrogen fertilization increased the N, Ca and Mg foliar levels, independently of the application way. However, in general, it reduced the leaf levels of K and P. There was no influence of N rates from polymer-coated urea and application way on the morphological attributes and yield of the crop. Keywords: Lactuca sativa L.; nitrogen; slow-release fertilizer; controlled-release fertilizer.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of corn hybrids for grain productivity and fresh produce marketability in two crop seasons. The experiment applied the completely randomized block design with three replications, during 2013-14 and 2014-15 crops. Ten hybrids indicated for the Midwest region of Goiás state were used, namely 2B512PW, 2B587PW, 2B707PW, 30F35HR, 30F53YH, BRS1055, BM3061, P3646H and P3862YH. Hybrid AG1051 was used as control. The studied variables were ear height (EH), unhusked ear productivity (UEP), husked ear productivity (HEP), marketable ear productivity (MEP), marketable ear length (MEL), marketable ear diameter (MED), grain mass (GM), and gross revenue (GR). Records show that hybrid P3646H achieved results lower than the control in all the analyzed variables, regardless of the crop season, whereas hybrids 2B512PW, BRS1055 and P3862YH showed figures similar to AG1051 in 2013/14 crop and lower ones in 2014/15. Therefore, would not represent direct market competitors, as the control hybrid holds a significant share in the domestic market. Hybrids 2B587PW, 30F35HR, 30F53YH and BM3061 presented the greatest suitability for fresh corn consumption, as featured the highest number of favorable traits for that market.

Nitrogen (N) fertilizers have their use efficiency adversely affected by the rate and source of N. A two-year field experiment was conducted to examine the yield response of upland rice by using NBPT (urease inhibitor), PCU (polymer-coated urea) and uncoated urea under different N application rates. It was hypothesized that either NPBT or PCU may result in increased yield components of upland rice when compared to conventional urea. The experiment was set up in a randomized block design in a 3 × 4 + 1 factorial scheme, with four replicates. Treatments comprised three sources (conventional uncoated urea, NBPT-treated urea, and polymer-coated urea) and four rates (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha-1) of N, in addition to a control treatment (no fertilizer application). Nitrogen fertilizers were applied in two split doses: 50% at the seedling stage, and 50% at the tillering stage (~80 days after planting). The results revealed that the use of enhanced-efficiency N sources increased the productivity and plant height of upland rice crop when compared to conventional urea. As compared to when it is untreated or polymner-coated, treating urea with NBPT resulted in increased 100-grain weight.

The roots, leaves and seeds of ambrette are considered as valuable traditional medicines. The bitter, sweet, acrid, aromatic seeds are used as tonic and are considered to possess cooling, aphrodisiac, ophthalmic, cardiotonic, digestive, stomachiecm carminative, pectoral diuretic, stimulant, antispasmodic and deodorant properties. Crop removes nutrients continuously from soil and therefore, their replenishment though fertilizers and manures are essential. To find out the integrated effect of inorganic fertilizers, neem coated urea, enriched pressmud compost and sea weed extract on NPK uptake by ambrette and its post – harvest soil NPK status, a field investigation was carried out at Farmer’s Field Sivapuri Village, Chidambaram Taluk, Cuddalore District during Kharif, 2018. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with eight treatments and three replications. The crop was grown to maturity with proper cultural practices. The results revealed that application of integrated application of inorganic fertilizers, neem coated urea, enriched pressmud compost and sea weed extract resulted in significantly highest NPK uptake by ambretee and influenced the post – harvest soil fertility status with respect to available NPK.

Maize hybrids have different levels of tolerance to the herbicide nicosulfuron, depending on the dose, the environment, the phenological stage of the plant and the timing of nitrogen fertilization, and phytotoxic effects can occur without proper management. There is also limited information on the selectivity of current genetically modified hybrids for other recommended herbicides, such as tembotrione. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbicides (tembotrione and nicosulfuron) and the timing of nitrogen fertilization on the yield of maize hybrids. The experimental design was a randomized block design, in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 4 replicates. The treatments consisted of four treatments [weeding; nicosulfuron + atrazine (20 and 32 + 1250 g ha-1 ai) and tembotrione + atrazine (75.6 + 1250 g ha-1 ai)] and two nitrogen fertilization times (0 and 7 days after application). Maize hybrids P30F53 Leptra, DKB 230PRO3 and KWS 9004PRO2 were assessed in two growing seasons (1st and 2nd harvest) during the 2016/2017 growing season. The percentages of weed control; phytotoxicity at 7, 14 and 21 days after application (DAA); plant height; number of rows per ear; and yield at harvest were evaluated. All herbicides were more effective in controlling weeds at the 1st harvest because of favourable climatic conditions. Nitrogen fertilization can be carried out on the same day as the application of the herbicides nicosulfuron and tembotrione with no reduction in yield for the hybrids P30F53 Leptra, DKB 230PRO3 and KWS 9004PRO2.

Several maize hybrids that present the phosphinothricin acetyltransferase gene (pat) are available in the market. However, these hybrids have different resistance levels to glufosinate herbicides. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the resistance of maize hybrids containing the pat gene (as a selection marker) to glufosinate. Field experiments were conducted in two sites in the 2016/2017 crop season, using a randomized block design with a 2×7 factorial arrangement and four replications. The treatments consisted of two glufosinate rates (0 and 500 g ha-1) and seven maize hybrids, six containing the pat gene as a selection marker (Herculex®, Agrisure-TL®, Herculex Yieldgard®, Leptra®, Viptera-3®, and Power-Core®) and one without the pat gene (VT PRO®). Two field experiments were conducted in different sites. The analyzed variables were: ammonia accumulation, electron transport rate (ETR), percentage of injuries, 100-grain weight, and grain yield. The glufosinate-susceptible maize hybrid presented higher ammonia accumulations, lower ETR, and high percentage of injuries (100%), which caused total loss of grain production. Considering the evaluated glufosinate-resistant maize hybrids, Viptera-3 and Agrisure-TL presented the highest ammonia accumulations and percentages of injuries, and lower ETR than the other hybrids. The grain yield of glufosinate-resistant maize hybrids was not reduced due to the application of the 500 g ha-1 of glufosinate. Thus, glufosinate-resistant maize hybrids containing the pat gene are resistant to the application of 500 g ha-1 of glufosinate, and this practice can be recommended for maize crops.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen (N) is one of the nutrients that have the most significant effect on corn grain productivity increase. In order to evaluate the effect of sources of N topdressing and doses in the grown corn culture, in a conventional till system, it was installed an experiment in the city of Urutaí, Goiás, in the 2012/13 crop, in clayey textured Red Latosol. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with four replications, with the treatments arranged in a factorial 3 x 5, consisting of three sources (coated urea, urea and ammonium sulfate) and five doses (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg ha-1) of N, topdressing, applied in the surface and in a single dose, when the corn plants were in V4 stage. The hybrid used was the P3646H. We evaluated the following characters: stem diameter, plant height, height of ear insertion, leaf N, number of ears per plant, ear length, number of rows per ear, number of grains per row, 100 grains mass and grain productivity. All characters have a response to nitrogen fertilization and only the height of ear insertion showed no significant difference between sources. The source coated urea showed the best results, indicating that its use may be compensatory, especially in favorable conditions for the NH3 volatilization, as the application of high doses of N in the surface.

Thirty-two TWC QPM hybrids were selected based on genotype × environment (G × E) interaction and stability. The experiment was conducted in three locations with differing conditions. TWC QPM hybrids were tested under nitrogen deficient and nitrogen sufficient fertilization at the Padjadjaran University Faculty of Agriculture Experimental Station, Jatinangor, Sumedang from March until July 2004. Another set of TWC QPM hybrids was tested under sufficient nitrogen fertilization at a high altitude location in Pangalengan from June until October 2004. Each experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with two replications with 32 TWC QPM hybrids and two check cultivars, i.e. Bisi-2 and Pioneer-7. Bartlett’s homogeneity test was applied to error derived from analyses of variances of every location. Combined analysis was done since error was homogenous for all observed characters. The combined analysis showed that there was G × E interaction for seed weight per 10 plants. Preliminary METs in West Java successfully selected newly developed TWC QPM hybrids based on stability and interaction between G × E. These hybrids are QPDMR-8-BCP1 and QPDMR-8-BCP2 for wide adaptive cultivars and QPDMR-35-BCP1, QPDMR-26-BCP1, QPDMR-8-BCP1, QPDMR-1-BCP2, QPDMR-8-BCP2, QPDMR-10-BCP2 and QPDMR-15-BCP2 specific adaptive cultivars.

A study was conducted with the objective of investigating the effects of the interaction between the inoculation of the pre-sprouted seedlings with Azospirillum brasilenseand the nitrogen fertilization in topdressing on the development of sugarcane plants(Saccharum officinarum). Pre-sprouted sugarcane seedlings, produced from 3.0 cm long mini-stems of the RB867515 variety, were transplanted 25 days after sprouting into 12 L plastic pots. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme: two inoculation treatments [without (control) and inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense] and five application rates of N fertilizer in topdressing (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg dm–3of N), with four repetitions. The inoculation with A. brasilensewas carried out in transplanting the seedlings using 4 mL of the inoculum AzoTotal® per seedling, containing the strains AbV5 and AbV6. The nitrogen fertilization in topdressing was performed at 20 days after transplanting the seedlings as urea (45% of N). The results reported that the application of N fertilizer rates in topdressingresulted in a linear increase in plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves per plant, number of tillers and dry matter production of plants inoculated with A. brasilense. When the plants were not inoculated with A. brasilense, nitrogen fertilization resulted in an increase also in the number of leaves and tillers per plant. The use of A. brasilenseinoculation in pre-sprouted sugarcane seedlings has a beneficial effect on the development of plants only when associated with nitrogen fertilization in topdressing. Sugarcane plants not fertilized with N have a negative response to inoculation with A. brasilense, indicating the occurrence of possible phytotoxic effects on plant development up to 60 days after transplanting.

Maize inoculation with bacteria of the genus Azospirillum can reduce the consumption of nitrogen fertilizers to obtain maximum grain yield. In this context, the aim was to evaluate the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense associated with nitrogen fertilization on the maize agronomic performance. A randomized block design was used in a split-plot scheme with four replicates. Four inoculation managements with Azospirillum brasilense (T0 - control without inoculation; TC2 - seed box inoculation, 200x108 viable cells ha-1; TC3 - seed box inoculation, 400x108 viable cells ha-1; TS1 - previous inoculation of the seeds, 600x108 viable cells ha-1) associated with four top-dressing N doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1), applied at maize stage V6 by urea. Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense associated with top-dressing nitrogen fertilization increases the number of grain rows per ear, number of grains per row, number of grains per ear and grain yield of maize, mainly due to its positive effects on plant nutrition. Managements with seed box inoculation with 400x108 viable cells per ha (TC3) and inoculation in seed pre-treatment (TS1) are the most recommended for maize.
