ABSTRACT Genotypes can respond differently to environments; thus, studies on adaptability and production stability are important to assist breeders in the identification and recommendation of cultivars. The objective of this work was to determine the adaptability and production stability of cowpea genotypes focused on subsidize recommendations of cultivars for green grain production in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Five assays were conducted in different locations in two climatic regions of the state of Ceará: a tropical mild hot semiarid region encompassing the municipalities of Acaraú, Pentecoste, and Crato, and a tropical hot semiarid region encompassing the municipalities of Mauriti and Madalena. Twenty cowpea genotypes-12 elite lines and 8 cultivars-were evaluated for cultivation value and use, using a randomized block design, with four replications. The results were subjected to analyses of variance and adaptability and green grain yield stability analyses by GGE biplot multivariate analysis. The effects of genotypes, environments, and G×E were significant, denoting different responses of genotypes in different locations. The results of the adaptability and stability analyses by the GGE biplot method showed that the two principal components explained 72.17% of the total variation, allowing reliable bidimensional projections. The municipality of Crato was the ideal location for tests and the lines MNC05-847B-123 and MNC00-595F-27 showed good production, adaptation, and stability, and can be recommended for green grain production in the state of Ceará, Brazil.

In tropical and semi-arid regions of Brazil, phosphorus is one of the most limiting elements of cowpea productivity. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of applying five phosphorus doses in the soil on morpho-physiological and production components in three improved cultivars of cowpea. The experiment was carried out at the São Fernando farm located in José de Freitas, PI, Brazil, in a Plinthosol with a low phosphorus content. The experimental design was complete randomized block design with four replications in a 5 × 3 factorial scheme consisting of five phosphorus doses (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg P2O5 ha−1) and three improved cowpea cultivars (BRS Guariba, BRS Tumucumaque, and BRS Cauamé). No interaction was observed between cultivars and phosphorus doses for any of the assessed variables. The cultivar BRS Tumucumaque showed the highest value for one-hundred-grain weight (21.0 g) and, together with BRS Guariba, the highest value of pod length. An increment was observed in growth (stem diameter, main branch length, leaf area, and shoot dry matter) and production characteristics (number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, one-hundred-grain weight, and grain production per plant) in response to increases in phosphorus doses. The dose of 183.1 kg P2O5 ha−1 provided the maximum technical grain yield, estimated at 2,023.3 kg ha−1.

Background: In the wake of unpredictable climate change, it is imperative for the breeders to identify hybrids with better adaptation to meet the growing food demand. The present study was carried out to identify stable maize hybrids across various environments. Methods: Twenty one maize hybrids along with two commercial checks viz., CP-818 and Bioseed-TX369 were tested over three locations viz., Viluppuram, Trivandrum and Nagercoil. The experiments were laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Result: AMMI and GGE analysis of variance revealed that the first two principal axes explained the majority of G ´ E interaction. According to AMMI analysis, the hybrid AUK 6240 was relatively stable with high mean whereas, GGE biplots-genotype view identified AUMH 1277 as stable with better yield per plant. GGE biplot-environment view identified Nagercoil as the ideal test location. What-won-where biplots identified three hybrids viz., AU-101, AU-110 and CP-818 suited to Viluppuram and Nagercoil. Though, hybrids with specific adaptability and ideal test location were efficiently identified, study must be extended to more number of environments and hybrids.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen is essential for sustaining life on the planet, and it is the most important nutrient for obtaining high agricultural production. However, their use leads to the release of nitrous oxide with a global warming potential 296 times higher than the CO2 molecule, making it a challenge to reduce their use in agriculture. The objective of this research was to identify efficient popcorn inbred lines and responsive nitrogen use and exhibit a good expansion volume. For this, 29 inbred lines from the Germplasm Collection of Darcy Ribeiro North Fluminense State University (UENF) were evaluated at two contrasting levels of nitrogen availability (low and ideal) at two representative locations in the north and northwest of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, arranged in a randomized block design with three replicates. These inbred lines were discriminated against efficient use of nitrogen by multivariate GGE Biplot. Selective accuracy was close to 1, showing that the genotypes were enough to provide contrasting success in selection procedures. The first two main components (PC) retained 93.82% of the total variation, and PC1 furnished an information ratio (IR) that was unaffected by noise. L77 was the most unstable line, while P7, P2, P6, P3, P5, P4, P9, P10, P8, P9, L70, L74, and L55 were efficient and responsive. The GGE biplot method is recommended for the reliable identification of popcorn lines that are efficient and responsive to the use of nitrogen.

The objective of this work was to evaluate physiological and biochemical responses of Pele de sapo melon to different irrigation depths (ID) and bioestimulant rates (BTM) to improve its production efficiency. The experiment was conducted in an experimental field in Juazeiro, BA, Brazil. A randomized block design in split split-plot arrangement was used, with four ID (60, 80, 100, and 120% of crop evapotranspiration – ETc) in the plots; five (BTM) (Stimulate® at 0, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4, and 4.8 L ha-1 applied via irrigation system during the flowering stage and after the fruiting stage) in the subplots; and two crop seasons (hot season, 23 to 39 °C; and cold season, 15 to 30 °C) in the sub-subplots. The plants were under daily drip irrigation and spacing of 2.0 × 0.3 m. The variables evaluated were: gas exchange, water use efficiency, chlorophyll a and b, relative water, sugar, and amino acid contents, and fruit yield. The results showed that the ID of 60% ETc resulted in water deficit, denoted by increases in solute concentrations, whereas the ID of 80% and 100% resulted in plants with good performance for biochemical, physiological, and production parameters in both crop seasons. The hot season, ID of 120% ETc, and BTM of 2.4 L ha-1 are recommended for Pele de sapo melon crops, since they result in the best physiological responses and fruit yields.

ABSTRACT - The present study aimed to determine the curves of macronutrients and dry matter accumulation in grain sorghum DKB 599, grown in a semiarid region. A field experiment was conducted on a sandy loam eutrophic red Latosol (Oxisol) in Janaúba, State of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil, in a randomized block design with four replications. As statistical method, a nonlinear regression, sigmoidal function with three parameters was used. After drying, the plants were weighed and ground to determine N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S concentration. Grain sorghum plants accumulate nutrients in their shoots in the following order: N> K> Ca> P> Mg> S. The highest concentrations of K and N were observed in stems and grains, respectively. In the conditions of this experiment, the most favorable time to perform nitrogen and potassium topdressing fertilization is when the plants present seven fully expanded leaves or 24 days after the emergency (DAE). Keywords: fertilization, growth, nutrition, Sorghum bicolor.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the grain yield and stability of common bean genotypes, as well as the representativeness and discrimination ability of locations in multi-environment trials (METs), using the GGE biplot analysis. The grain yield of 27 genotypes was evaluated in 16 trials carried out in nine locations, in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, during the first and second crop seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016. A randomized complete block design with three replicates was used. As the trials were neither conducted in all locations, nor in all growing seasons of both years, a highly unbalanced dataset was used. Genotype 5 (CHC 01-175-1) was the most productive and stable, common bean genotype and can be considered the closest one to the ideal for the target region. Furthermore, this genotype performs well in both crop seasons, outperforming all the evaluated checks; therefore, it has the potential to be released as a new cultivar. Chapecó can be considered the ideal location for the selection of common bean genotypes, in the state of Santa Catarina, since it shows high representativeness and discrimination ability in the rainy and dry crop seasons.
