The light petroleum extract from the roots of Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus Hassl contained nine flavonoids, including six new ones. These are 2,4-cis-2,4,5,8-tetramethoxy-(2´´,3´´:6,7)-furanoflavan; 2,4-cis-4-hydroxy-2,5,8-trimethoxy-(2´´,3´´:6,7)-furanoflavan; 2,4-cis-2-prenyloxy-4,5,8-trimethoxy-(2´´,3´´:6,7)-fu-ranoflavan; 2,4-cis-2-prenyloxy-4-hydroxy-5,8-dimethoxy-(2´´,3´´:6,7)-furanoflavan; 2',5',6'-trimethoxy-9-(1,1-dimethylallyoxy)-[2´´,3´´:3´,4´]-furanochalcone; 5,6-dimethoxy-(2´´,3´´:7,8)-furanoflavone, identi-fied by analysis of their spectral data (UV, IR, ¹H and 13C NMR, 2D-NMR, NOE and MS). The natural occurrence of 2,4-dioxygenated flavan derivatives is being reported for the first time. Quantitative analysis of the petrol extract, by using reversed-phase HPLC, showed that the most abundant flavonoid in the extract is 2,4-cis-2,4,5,8- tetramethoxy-(2´´,3´´:6,7)-furanoflavan.

A hopane triterpenoid (11b, 22-dihydroxyhopane) was isolated from the methanol extract of the mycelium of Isaria japonica in Vietnam. The structure of this compound was elucidated using a combination of 1D and 2D NMR techniques (1H-, 13C-NMR, COSY, HSQC and HMBC). In the study, we reported the comprehensive 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral data of 11b, 22-dihydroxyhopane for the first time.

Seven compounds (1-7) were isolated from the marine sponge Aaptos aaptos living in the Vietnamese sea. Their structures were determined as 2 hours, 5 H,7 H,9 H-9 S-hydroxy-imidazo[1,5- α]pyridine-1,3-dione (1), 3-([9-methylhexadecyl]oxy)propane-1,2-diol 2, 2,3-dihydro-2,3-dioxoaaptamine (3), indol-3-aldehyde (4), methyl indole-3-carboxylate (5) 4-hydroxy-5-(indole-3-yl)−5-oxo-pentan-2-one (6), and thymidine (7) by extensive analysis of HR-ESI-MS, 1D, and 2D NMR spectral data, as well as by comparison of the spectral data with those reported in the literature. In addition, the absolute configuration of 1 was determined from the experimental ECD spectrum and comparison of this with the theoretical ECD calculations using the TDDFT method. Compounds 1 and 2 were isolated from nature for the first time. Compound 3 induced cytotoxic activity against SK-LU-1, MCF-7, HepG2, and SK-Mel-2 cell lines with IC50 values of 41.27 ± 2.63, 40.70 ± 2.65, 34.31 ± 3.43, and 36.63 ± 1.40 µM, respectively.

The One Strain Many Compounds (OSMAC) method was applied to explore the chemical diversities of secondary metabolites produced by Neosartorya fischeri NRRL 181. Four pyripyropenes 1–4, eight steroids 5–11, and four prenylated indole alkaloids 12–15, were obtained from the fungus cultured in petri dishes containing potato dextrose agar (PDA). 1,7,11-trideacetylpyripyropene A (1) and 1,11-dideacetyl pyripyropene A (2) were obtained and spectroscopically characterized (1D, 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS) from a natural source for the first time. It offered a sustainable source of these two compounds, which were usually used as starting materials in preparing pyripyropene derivatives. In addition, as compared with all the other naturally occurring pyripyropenes, 1 and 2 possessed unique acetylation patterns that did not follow the established late-step biosynthetic rules of pyripyropenes. The natural occurrence of 1 and 2 in the fungus implied that the timing and order of hydroxylation and acetylation in the late-step biosynthetic pathway of pyripyropenes remained to be revealed. The isolation and identification of 1–15 indicated that the OSMAC method could remarkably alter the metabolic profile and enrich the chemical diversities of fungal metabolites. Compounds 1–4 exhibited no obvious cytotoxicity against the triple-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 as compared with taxol.

A phenylpropanoid [2-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane-1,3-diol] (1) together with four known biflavonoids namely 7, 4′, 7′″, 4′″-tetra- O-methyl amentoflavone (2); 7, 4′, 7″-tri- O-methyl amentoflavone (3); ginkgetin (4); sequoiaflavone (5) were isolated from the acetone soluble extract of needles of Cephalotaxus harringtonia var. harringtonia. Their structures were elucidated mainly on the basis of interpretation of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. The detailed spectral data of phenylpropanoid have been described for the first time. Ginkgetin (4) exhibited significant hepatoprotective activity in rat at 6 mg/kg oral dose level.

Chisocheton balansae C.DC., is one of the Meliaceae family plants which is the endemic plants from Soputan Mountain, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study was aimed to determine the chemical structure of flavan-3-ol compounds from ethyl acetate extract of C. balansae C.DC stembark. Dried powder of C. balansae C.DC stem bark was extracted consecutively with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol solvents. Four flavan-3-ol compounds, named catechin (1), epicatechin (2), epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (3), and epicatechin-3-O-gallate (4) were successfully isolated from ethyl acetate extract. The chemical structure of these isolates was determined by spectroscopic methods (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, and 2D-NMR) and comparison with previous reported spectral data. These compounds are first time reported from this plant.

In the present study, two novel chalcone glycosides, trans-3-ethoxy-4-O-(glucopyranoside) -2', 3', 4', 5', 6' -pentahydroxy chalcone (compound 1) and trans-3-methoxy-4-O-(glucopyranoside) -2', 3', 4', 5', 6' -pentahydroxy chalcone (compound 2) have been isolated from the leaves of Viburnum lantana L. The structures were elucidated by using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2D-NMR such as HMQC, HMBC and NOE experiments and UV-Vis, MS and IR spectra. The antioxidant property of hydroalcoholic extract was evaluated by DPPH style. The results revealed that the leave extract possesses significant antioxidant activity (IC50 = 52 µg/mL). This study indicates that hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves from this species is an important source of chalcone and flavonoid derivatives, as well as of useful natural antioxidants. These chalcone glycoside compounds were isolated for the first time from V. lantana leaves.
