ABSTRACT The estimation of repeatability coefficient provides support to define the number and the appropriate period of genotype evaluations, obtaining better success in breeding programs, in order to lower labor costs. Therefore, knowing repeatability and heritability parameters is relevant. Thus, the aim of this study was to estimate the repeatability and heritability coefficients and accurately determine the number of measurements. Eight strawberry cultivars were analyzed in a randomized block design with four replicates and eighteen plants per plot, being harvested twice a week over a period of six months (May to October, 2012), totalizing six evaluations. Among the evaluated traits, the estimated heritabilities ranged from 3.13% (number of fruits) to 40.20% (average fruit mass) whereas the repeatability ranged from 9.00 to 42.06% for the same characters. The minimum number of evaluations, to reach a coefficient of determination with an accuracy of about 80%, ranged from the maximum of 40 for fruit number and the minimum of 6 for average fruit mass. In order to be considered commercially important marketable fruit mass, minimum of 20 evaluations are required, it means, at least, 20 months.

The aim of this research was to evaluate plant vibration for fruit and seed production of american pepper in greenhouse with open and closed sides. The experiment was carried out at Fazenda Experimental da Unesp/FCA located in the municipality of São Manuel-SP. Six treatments were carried out, in a split plot design, two plots with plant vibration or without plant vibration and three subplots with cultivars ('Dirce', 'Dínamo' and 'Doce Comprida'). Plants were vibrated by shaking the wire where the stake was fixed, manually, for about 5 seconds, twice a day. Randomized block design with three replications were used. The same experiment was performed in two environments: with and without closed sides with screen. The traits evaluated were: mass of fruit and total and marketable number of fruits (no visible defects) per plant; percentage of marketable fruit; mass, diameter and length of the fruit; mass and number of seeds per fruit; and plant height. The fruit production was higher in the environment with sides closed, with 24 marketable fruits per plant whereas in the open environment, 7 marketable fruits. American pepper plant vibration did not affect production, length, diameter and average mass of the fruits. Exceptionally for the cultivar 'Doce Comprida', a higher seed production per fruit was obtained in open environment in the absence of plant vibration, in comparison to close environment, with average of 259 and 126 seeds per fruit, respectively. American pepper plant vibration did not affect production, length, diameter and average mass of marketable fruits

ABSTRACT Kale has a long vegetative cycle, requiring a lot of labor, due to the need for tutoring, thinning and multiple harvests, leading to difficulties in the maintenance and evaluation of experiments. Thus, the objective was to estimate the minimum number of evaluations for the assertive selection of half-sib progenies of kale by means of a repeatability study by Bayesian approach. Twenty four half-sib progenies were evaluated in a randomized block design with four replicates and five plants per plot. The number of shoots, number of marketable leaves, fresh mass of marketable leaves and fresh mass per leaf were measured throughout 15 harvests. All traits showed high estimates of the repeatability, indicating high regularity in the expression of the traits during the harvesting period. With eight harvests it is possible to evaluate all the traits with a coefficient of determination superior to 85% in half-sib progenies of kale.

ABSTRACT: Cultivars of the genus Nopalea are known in Brazil for being tolerant to cochineal carmine attacks, thus making the cultivation of this genus a promising alternative for mitigating the negative effects of this insect on the production of biomass. With the objectives of characterizing morphologically spineless forage cactus varieties and identify morphological characteristics that may be the focus in spineless forage cactus breeding programs, an experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with 11 treatments and four replications. The variety Alagoas showed the highest values of weight, area and volume of cladodes. The varieties Negro Michoacan F7 and V7, Tamazunchale V12 showed the highest values of the cladode area index, the total volume of cladodes and total fresh mass production. The varieties Negro Michoacan V7 and F7 presented the highest water use efficiency and dry mass yield. Cladode volume showed the highest correlation coefficients with the fresh weight of cladodes. Aiming the release of varieties for biomass production, varieties Negro Michoacan F7, V7 and Tamazunchale V12 may substitute the Miúda variety. The number and cladode area index may be used as criteria for selection of superior varieties in breeding programs.

The characterization of maize landraces is extremely important in breeding programs for use of these genotypes as sources of genetic variability. The objective of this study was to quantitatively characterize 28 populations of maize landraces from the state of Paraná using the estimates of the effects of varieties and heterosis parents and the general combining ability, thereby assessing the main agronomic traits. In the crop of 2008/09, 56 inter-varietal hybrids, obtained through a topcross, 28 populations of maize landraces and three check varieties were evaluated for female flowering (FF), plant height (PH), ear height (EH) and grain mass (GY). The treatments were evaluated in a randomized block design, with two replications, at three Paraná State locations: the Experimental Center of the Agronomic Institute of Paraná in Londrina (IAPAR) and the experimental units of Pato Branco and Ponta Grossa. The data were submitted to an analysis of variance, considering a fixed model for genotypes and a random model for environments; the averages grouped by the Scott-Knott test, along with intersections of topcrosses, were analyzed according to a readapted model proposed by Oliveira et al. (1997). According to estimates of the parental effects, the GI 133 population showed the most promising estimates for all characteristics. The GI 088 and GI 173 populations stood out with promising estimates of the effects of heterosis. The conclusion is that the populations GI 133 and GI 173 may be indicated for recurrent selection programs or participation in obtaining composites.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the productivity and quality of melon fruits as a function of the dose and time of application of biostimulant in the conditions of the semi-arid region of Paraíba. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Campina Grande, campus of Pombal - PB, Brazil, in a randomized block design in a 4 x 5 split plot scheme, with doses of biostimulant (0; 0.5; 1.0; 1, 5 and 2.0 L ha-1) and in the subset of the biostimulant application times (15; 20; 25 and 30 days before harvest - DAC), in four replications. Characteristics related to fruit production and quality were evaluated. There was no interaction between the factors of dose and application time of the biostimulant in any of the evaluated characteristics. Thus, the highest estimated values of number of fruits per plant, fruit mass and total melon production were obtained with the application of doses ranging from 0.9 to 1.5 L ha-1 and at the time of application it varied from 22,5 to 23.6 DAC. The content of soluble solids increased 5.5% when the biostimulant dose of 2.0 L ha-1 was used and 4.4% when the product was applied 15 days before harvest.

Abstract The interspecific introgression of resistance genes to diseases in commercial varieties through interspecific crosses has been adopted as a strategy in breeding programs of sour passion fruit. This work aimed to evaluate 11 progenies of multispecific hybrids obtained from crosses involving seven Passiflora species, in addition to four commercial cultivars, using the REML/BLUP method. The experiment was carried out as a randomized block design with six repetitions and three plants per plot. Ten fruit traits were evaluated. The additive, multiplicative, and sum of ranks indexes were applied to determine the most appropriate selective strategy in the simultaneous increase of fruit weight, number of fruits, and yield. Plants from the 325 x VAO progeny showed a lower bacterial defoliation index and better means predicted for the traits number of fruits and productivity. The progenies 325 x LD4, PL3 x LD4, and the controls CSB-Marília and BRS-Gigante Amarelo showed plants with better-predicted means for traits related to fruit quality. The genetic gains demonstrated good prospects for the use of wild species in sour passion fruit genetic breeding.

This study was carried out in Bingol province on eastern Anatolian Region between 2013 and 2015. In this study, we obtained 14 bitter vetch genotypes from different sources. The experiment was carried our in three replications in randomized block design. Each plant was weekly measured for 6 weeks starting from germination. For each plant, plant height, fresh and dry stem weight, fresh and dry leaf weights were determined. Logistic, Richards and Weibull growth models were fitted to describe the growth pattern of the genotypes. The best fitting model criteria used were coefficient of determination and mean squared. Richards’s growth model was found to best fit the data for most of the genotypes. Logistic model was the worst fit. In Turkey, climate and soil properties have very large variations. For this, local genotypes showed large variation according to plating areas. YEREL LICE genotype showed more stable and it is the height identified all growth models than other local genotypes. However, IFVE 2923 SEL and IFVE 2977 SEL 2802 these genotypes gave positive results in different environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the minimum number of plants per plot to assess the field resistance in common bean to white mold. Thirteen cultivars were inoculated with six isolates of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications and plots consisting of 1-m rows with 15 plants. Plants were inoculated by the straw test as proposed by Petzoldt and Dickson (1996), to evaluate partial resistance in a greenhouse. Eight days after inoculation the disease severity was evaluated on a 1-9 diagrammatic scale, where 1 = asymptomatic plants to 9 = plant death. To determine the minimum number of plants per plot, the following methods were used: maximum curvature, segmented linear model, quadratic segmented model and the relative CV model. There were significant differences among cultivars and isolates and no significant cultivar - isolate interaction. It was observed that eight plants per plot is an adequate number to assess the reaction of common bean to white mold.

This study aims to determine the effect of the concentration of AB Mix nutrients on the growth and yield of pakcoy plants. This research has been carried out at the agronet house of the Faculty of Agriculture, Panji Sakti University at an altitude of 39 m above sea level (above sea level), in March-May 2019. The experimental design used a single randomized block design (RCBD), namely the concentration of the AB Mix nutrition treatment ( K). Statistical analysis showed that AB Mix nutrient concentration had a very significant effect (p <0.01) on plant height at 14 days after planting, 21 days after planting, 28 days after planting, total wet weight per plant, leaf area per plant, and economic fresh weight per plant. The nutrient concentration of AB Mix 1.2% provides the best growth and yield of pakcoy plants. The higher concentration of AB Mix nutrition given causes the total wet weight per plant to change quadratically Ŷ = -137.83x2 + 325.54x - 88.997 with the coefficient of determination (R2) = 1 so that the optimum concentration = 1.18% and wet weight is obtained maximum total planting = 103,226 grams.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of mechanical-manual thinning (MmT) at different developmental stages in the thinning efficiency and productive performance of ‘Sensação’ peach trees. The experiment was performed during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons, in a commercial orchard located in Morro Redondo (RS), Brazil. Plant material consisted of 7-year-old peach trees grafted on Capdeboscq rootstock and trained as an open-vase system. The experiment was arranged as a randomized block design, with five three-trees replications. In order to reduce the effect of personal experience, the treatments and measurements were applied by the same person in a set of replications throughout the experiment. Treatments consisted of: control I [without thinning (WT)]; control II [hand thinning (HT) 40 days after full bloom (40 DAFB)]; MmT at full bloom (FB): 50% of open flowers; MmT at the end of bloom (EB): 80-100% of open flowers; MmT at petal fall (PF); and MmT at the green fruit (GF) stage (fruit with ~1 cm of diameter). The MmT was performed using a hand-held portable device. The parameters assessed were: percentage of thinning, fruit set, thinning time, work economy, production per tree, fruit mass, estimated yield and fruit size distribution. The use of the MmT at the stages tested reduces thinning time of ‘Sensação’ peach trees, resulting in labor saving, as well as increases the percentage of fruit in category (CAT) 1. The MmT when performed at GF results in a higher percentage of thinning. The treatment MmT at FB increases the average fruit mass.
