The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of protein intake during pregnancy on postpartum weight variation. This was a prospective cohort study with 421 women interviewed at 15 days (baseline) and 2, 6, and 9 months postpartum. Data on diet were obtained using the food frequency questionnaire, focusing on the second and third trimesters. Protein intake was considered adequate when women consumed > 1.2g of protein per kg body weight, and inadequate when < 1.2g/kg. The study adopted the mixed effects model for repeated measurements over time. The results showed a mean postpartum weight loss of 0.409kg/month (±0.12) (p < 0.01). Women with adequate protein intake during pregnancy lost an additional 0.094kg/month (±0.04) during postpartum (p = 0.03) when compared to women with inadequate intake. The model was adjusted for energy, % body fat, stature, age, schooling, skin color, and smoking. Recommended protein intake during pregnancy favored postpartum weight reduction.

Nutritional follow-up of 20 CAPD patients for 18–24 months showed a decrease in total body nitrogen, increase in total body potassium and body weight, and a decrease in protein intake over time. There was no correlation between changes in TBN and the biochemical parameters measured. Serial dietetic assessments and measurements of total body nitrogen as well as adherence to an adequate protein intake will assist in the prevention of malnutrition in CAPD patients.

Aesthetic athletes strive to attain an ideal body image and the physical demands placed on dancers make their body composition and fitness equally as important as their technique. Body composition has shown positive changes in response to increased protein intake and may improve aesthetics of dance performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which supplemental whey protein (PRO) would improve body composition in female collegiate dancers compared with an isocaloric placebo (PLA). Twenty-one (age, 19.6 ± 1.4 years) female collegiate dancers were randomly assigned to consume PRO or PLA (25 g, 3×/day) for 12 weeks. Laboratory testing at weeks 0, 6, and 12 included 24-h urine collection, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), resting metabolic rate, and performance. Data were reported as means ± SD. Significance was accepted at p < 0.05. Body weight, fat mass, and lean soft tissue did not change between groups or over time. Body composition index (BCI = [(LSTpost − LSTpre) + (FMpre − FMpost)]; where LST is lean soft tissue, FM is fat mass, pre is pre-intervention, and post is post-intervention) significantly improved over time in PRO (+0.6 ± 1.9) but not PLA (−1.8 ± 3.1; p = 0.048); however, neither group demonstrated changes in laboratory performance tests. Protein supplementation for 12 weeks significantly improved BCI and provided a simple way to improve the diet in female collegiate dancers. Novelty Twelve weeks of protein supplementation does not change body weight in female collegiate dancers. BCI improves following protein supplementation in female collegiate dancers.

ABSTRACT

Background: Stunting was a chronic nutrition problem that still be a concern in the developing nations include Indonesia. The direct cause of stunting was infectious disease and inadequate food intake such as energy and protein deficiency. In Indonesia in 2010, the prevalence of stunting was 35.7%, in
Yogyakarta as much as 22.5%, in Bantul District in 2012 was 18.08% and in Sedayu Subdistrict was 30.51%.

Objectives: To know the history of energy and protein intake as the risk factors of stunting in children of 6-23 months.

Methods: This was an observational study with case-control design. The population were children aged 6-23 months who lived in Sedayu Subdistrict, Bantul. The measurement energy and protein intake used a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and determination of stunting used the WHO standard anthro 2005. Technology and economical development recently poses impact toward changes of lifestyle which cause shifted of the disease pattern. The escalating of cardiovascular appears to be more common among executive productive age group. Hypercholesterolemia is the only risk factor that by itself can cause atherosclerosis. Hypercholesterolemia might be influenced by nutrient intake. The objective of this study is to know the relationship of between nutrient intake as well as food pattern and hypercholesterolemia among executive group surrounding Jakarta. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) content was assessed by collecting fasting blood samples. 24 hour recall and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was conducted to assess nutrient intake. Prevalence hypercholesterolemia was 46.1% among this excecutive group. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was significant higher among men (50.6%) compared to women (29.7%). Hypercholesterolemia prevalence tend to be higher among those who were over 40 years old, had higher education and had higher income. There was a relationship between nutrient intake especially animal protein intake as well as more frequent consuming beef with the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia. Non-animal protein intake, more frequent consuming tempe, fibre intake as well as more frequent consuming fruit and vegetable might be considered as protective food toward lowering effect of the LDL plasma cholesterol level.

Abstract. The mixed-effects location scale model is an extension of a multilevel model for longitudinal data. It allows covariates to affect both the within-subject variance and the between-subject variance (i.e., the intercept variance) beyond their influence on the means. Typically, the model is applied to two-level data (e.g., the repeated measurements of persons), although researchers are often faced with three-level data (e.g., the repeated measurements of persons within specific situations). Here, we describe an extension of the two-level mixed-effects location scale model to such three-level data. Furthermore, we show how the suggested model can be estimated with Bayesian software, and we present the results of a small simulation study that was conducted to investigate the statistical properties of the suggested approach. Finally, we illustrate the approach by presenting an example from a psychological study that employed ecological momentary assessment.
