In Costa Rica, there has been a growing interest to use pineapple fiber from plant, for which current processes need to be improved or new processes need to be developed, with emphasis on drying methods. This work presents the design and evaluation of the behavior of a prototype portable solar dryer in four sites of Costa Rica. The design describes the main parts of the dryer, as well as how they were constructed. The behavior was evaluated according to temperature and relative humidity inside e outside the chamber, and the influence of direct and indirect solar radiation. In order to achieve improved dryer efficiency, a dehumidifier was used to control relative humidity, and a heating system was implemented during the hours of low temperature, low solar radiation and high relative humidity. Based on drying time, final moisture content of fibers of pineapple leaves from plant, and the varying hours when fibers were put to dry, the evaluation of the dryer revealed that the best fiber-drying interval is from 6h00 to 14h00, and after that, it is convenient to inject hot air and use a dehumidifier in the dryer in order to increase its efficiency.

Experiment on catfish drying employing ‘Teko Bersayap’ solar dryer was conducted. The result of the experiment indicated that the dryer was able to increase ambient temperature up to 44% and decrease ambient relative humidity up to 103%. Fish drying process followed equations : KAu = 74,94 e-0,03t for unsplitted fish and KAb = 79,25 e-0,09t for splitted fish, where KAu = moisture content of unsplitted fish (%), KAb = moisture content of splitted fish (%), t = drying time. Drying of unsplitted fish finished in 43.995 hours while drying of split fish completed in 15.29 hours. Splitting the fish increased 2,877 times drying rate.

The objective of this work was to determine the effects of blanching and two drying methods, open-sun drying and natural convection solar drying, on the quality characteristics of red pepper. A 2 × 3 factorial design with experimental factors as 2 drying methods (open-sun drying and use of solar dryer) and 3 levels of pepper blanching (unblanched, blanched in plain water, and blanched in 2% NaCl) was conducted. Dried pepper samples were analysed for chemical composition, microbial load, and consumer sensory acceptability. Blanching of pepper in 2% NaCl solution followed by drying in a natural convection solar dryer reduced drying time by 15 hours. Similarly, a combination of blanching and drying in the solar dryer improved microbial quality of dried pepper. However, blanching and drying processes resulted in reduction in nutrients such as vitamin C and minerals content of pepper. Blanching followed by drying in natural convection solar dryer had the highest consumer acceptability scores for colour and overall acceptability, while texture and aroma were not significantly (p>0.05) affected by the different treatments. Therefore, natural convection solar dryer can be used to dry pepper with acceptable microbial and sensory qualities, as an alternative to open-sun drying.

Abstract Large amounts of sludge are generated from wastewater treatment in seafood processing industries. Most of the dewatered sludge in Thailand is not utilized and disposed by landfilling. The dried sludge utilization as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is an alternative solution due to the gross calorific value (GCV), which is greater than 21.9 MJ/kg. However, the key obstacle is its high moisture content of 87.4% (wet basis). Therefore, drying methods using hot air and microwave techniques were investigated for preparing dried sludge. The effects of hot air temperatures (100-150 °C) and microwave power levels (100-800 W) were compared on drying kinetics, specific energy consumption (SEC), and characteristics of the dried products. The results showed that drying times were decreased by increasing the hot air temperatures. In the same way, the increase in microwave power levels decreased the drying time. The application of microwaves contributed to reducing the drying time by more than 46% compared to the hot air. The reduction of drying times resulted in the saving SEC. The GCV of the dried sludge decreased with the decrease in the volatile matter (VM) due to the high component of VM as 79.5-80.3% (dry ash-free basis). The sludge dried by the microwaves showed a lower GCV than the hot air products. However, dried sludges still had high GCV (≥ 20.8 MJ/kg). Furthermore, the minimal variation of the product characteristics demonstrated that the microwave technique could be applied as an alternative drying method with a rapid process compared to the conventional hot air technique.

Dried vegetables are considered convenient for storage, transportation and preservation. The different drying techniques could influence the quality of resulting products. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three distinguish drying methods as hot-air drying, foam-mat drying and microwave drying on the color retention and chlorophyll of green vegetables powder. Fresh spinach(Spinacia oleraceaL.), celery (Apium graveolensL.), Malabar spinach (Basella albaL.) were dried by different methods: hot air at 60oC, foam-mat at 60oC and microwave at 270 W until the samples reached approximately 9% of moisture content (wb). The drying time of the dried samples by microwave, foam-mat and hot-air method were 60, 210 and 240 min, respectively. Foam-mat dried vegetables were found to have the best quality in terms of color and the residual chlorophyll content. The findings suggest that foam-mat drying is promising in dried vegetable processing

In order to meet the drying demand of breeding wheat in China, the flank type of cropland plot breeding wheat drying car was designed, which was equipped with the solar collector automatically adjusting device and ensured that with the sun azimuth maximum angle of radiation, increased heat collecting efficiency in effective time. Used alternate partition drying storehouse and double duct W type corrugated plate collector to increase the effective contact time and heating effect about dry hot air with the breeding wheat, so improved the drying efficiency of wheat seed. The test results showed that the flank type of cropland plot breeding wheat drying car could easy to move within the cropland plot, when conducive to the breeding wheat drying operations, the average drying rate was 1.471%/h, and compared with the traditional drying methods, the average drying time was relatively reduced by 36.4%.

In the Chhattisgarh state of India, the Bastar region is famous for its various forest produce collected by local inhabitants. These collected forest produce are dried in open sun drying. This chapter presents the design and analysis of solar dryer which is simple in construction and a low-cost dryer. The construction of the solar dryer will be made of galvanized mild steel sheet absorbing the sun's radiation. The hot air will be taken out through a wind turbine ventilator at the top to maintain the required humidity level in the solar dryer. The analysis shows that the temperature inside the solar dryer is evenly distributed. The suggested solar dryer will reduce the drying time of the forest produce.

Drying is a simultaneous heat and mass transfer energy intensive operation, widely used as a food preservation technique. In view of improper postharvest methods, energy constraint, and environmental impact of conventional drying methods, solar drying could be a practical, economical, and environmentally reliable alternative. In the present paper applicability of mixed mode solar cabinet dryer was investigated for drying of commercially important and export oriented ginger. Freshly harvested ginger slices were successfully dried from initial moisture content of 621.50 to 12.19% (d.b.) and their drying characteristics, quality parameters, and kinetics were evaluated. The results showed that present solar dryer could be successfully applied for drying of ginger in view of quality, reduced drying time, and zero energy requirement as compared to conventional open sun drying and convective drying techniques, respectively. Drying curves showed that drying occurred in falling rate period and no constant period was observed. The effective moisture diffusivity was determined by using Fick’s second law and found to be 1.789×10-9 m2/s. The drying data was fitted to five thin layer drying models and compared using statistical criteria. Page model was found to be most suitable to describe the drying kinetics of ginger in solar dryer under natural convection among the tested models.

This research paper presents the experimental results of drying of chili by using the active solar dryer and sun drying because of chili is a commercial agricultural product of Thailand. The active solar dryer consisted of a solar collector, a drying chamber and a chimney. The small fans were installed in the solar collector of active solar dryer to provide the air flow circulated in the solar collector and a drying chamber. Drying of chili of 20 kg from moisture content 84 percent wet basis to 10 percent wet basis following the Thai Agricultural Standard (TAS 3001-2010) showed that the use of the active solar dryer to make the drying time reduced about 28.7 percent compared with sun drying because of the hot air temperature inside the drying chamber higher than the ambient temperature about 10 to 15 . The quality of dried chili from the active solar dryer better than dried chili from sun drying.

Indonesia one of the plants that leaves and seeds grow has many useful benefits for human life, namely candlenut. The post-harvest handling of candlenut at the farm level it is generally still done traditionally where candlenut is drying on the floor or by direct exposure to solar radiation. They need approximately 7-9 days to get the appropriate drying results. Candlenut drying is influenced by the intensity of solar radiation on temperature and drying time according to the required hazelnut content. the dry hazelnut can use solar radiation power that is solar dryer. Absorbent plate is one component that is very important because it functions to absorb the intensity of solar radiation and convert it into heat energy and move it to the workpiece (candlenut) above it. In this study, testing was done on variations of the absorbent plates of zinc, aluminum and iron as well as variations in the thickness of the absorbent plates. Data collection starts at 09:00 until 15:00 WITA in sunny weather conditions. The results showed that the aluminum absorbent plate with a thickness of 0.04 mm was more effective and efficient in drying the candlenut to increase the productivity of the candlenut. The highest absorbent plate temperature and drying time were found on the aluminum absorbent plate with a thickness of 0.4 mm that is 72.36 oC and a drying time of 6 hours and meets the standard of moisture content of candlenut solution, which is 5.3%.

Abstract Okra pods were dried using the following drying regimes; microwave (MWD), infrared (IRD) and convective hot-air drying (CHD). The objective of this investigate was to report the influences of drying methods on okra quality under different drying conditions. Data analysis showed that rehydration ratio and colour change increased with increase in drying air temperature and air velocity while specific energy consumption and shrinkage ratio decreased with increase in drying air temperature under (CHD). The rehydration ratio and colour of dried okra increased with increase in both infrared intensity but it also increased with a decrease in air velocity under (IRD). In the MWD method, drying time, specific energy consumption and shrinkage ratio decreased with increases in microwave power while the rehydration ratio and colour increased. Optimum drying period, specific energy consumption, colour, shrinkage and rehydration ratio were obtained for microwave drying. The model of Midilli et al. is the greatest for describing the drying curves of okra under all the drying processing conditions.
