The objective of this work was to evaluate the relationships of methionine plus cystine with lysine for Japanese quails in the laying phase. Thus, it was used 480 birds at initial age of 65 days, distributed in randomized block design with 6 treatments, 10 replicates and 8 birds per experimental unit. The treatments consisted of basal diet deficient in methionine plus cystine (0.65%), with 19.6% of crude protein and 2800 kcal of metabolizable energy/kg of ration, supplemented with six levels of DL-methionine 98% (0.116; 0.167; 0.218; 0.269; 0.320 and 0.371%), corresponding to methionine plus cystine with lysine ratio of 0.65, 0.70, 0.75, 0.80, 0.85 and 0.90, and the digestible lysine set at a suboptimal level of 1.00. The parameters studied were: feed intake, egg production per hen day, egg production per housed hen, commercial egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion per egg mass, feed conversion per dozen eggs, viability of birds, weight of the egg components (yolk, albumen and shell), percentage of components of eggs, diameter and height of the eggs and specific gravity. It was observed an increasing linear effect for feed intake, egg diameter, shell weight and percentage of yolk. For eggshell percentage, it was observed a decreasing linear effect. For the weight of the eggs, the best adjustment was obtained by using the Linear Response Plateau model. A quadratic effect was observed for egg mass, feed conversion per egg mass, egg production per hen day, egg production per housed hen, yolk weight, albumen weight and height of the eggs. The relationship of methionine plus cystine with lysine of 0.84 which corresponds to the consumption of 221.0 mg/bird/day of methionine + cystine provides better performance and satisfactory quality of Japanese quail eggs.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different tryptophan and digestible lysine ratios for growing Japanese quails (1 to 40 days of age) with repercussions on the early stage of production (41 to 110 days of age). A total of 1000 one day old Japanese quails were distributed at random, with five tryptophan and digestible lysine ratios, 10 replicates and 20 birds per experimental unit. A tryptophan- deficient basal diet was formulated with 1.48 g of digestible tryptophan /kg, corresponding to a ratio of tryptophan and lysine of 0.14. This basal diet was supplemented with five levels of L-tryptophan (98%), replacing glutamic acid corresponding to the tryptophan and lysine ratio of 0.14 (no supplementation); ratios of 0.16; 0.18; 0.20 and 0.22, being the diets isocaloric and isonitrogenous. The performance of the birds in the growing and egg laying phases was evaluated. Although body weight and weight gain until 40 days of age had increased (P<0,001) and feed intake in the egg laying phase had decreased (P=0,037) in a linear fashion, LRP was the one with the best adjustment for those parameters. The effect was quadratic for feed intake (P=0,0069), feed conversion (P=0,0032) and viability (P<0,001) of the birds in the growing phase.  A quadratic effect was found for egg production per bird housed at one day of age (P<0,001), weight gain at 110 days of age (P=0,039) and feed conversion per egg mass (P=0,046) in the laying phase. Intake of tryptophan increased (P<0,001) and egg production per housed bird in the laying phase linearly decreased (P<0,001) with the increase in the ratios between tryptophan and lysine. The digestible tryptophan and digestible lysine ratio is 0.18 (1.88 g of tryptophan/kg and 10.5 g of lysine/kg of diet), corresponding to an intake of 20.63 mg of tryptophan per bird per day, in the diet for growing, provides greater viability of birds in the growing phase and a satisfactory performance of Japanese quails in the laying phase.

<p>Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes níveis de sódio na dieta de codornas japonesas na fase de postura. Foram utilizadas 360 codornas japonesas, com idade inicial de 120 dias, distribuídas em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com seis tratamentos de acordo com o nível de sódio nas dietas, seis repetições e 10 aves por unidade experimental. Para formação das dietas experimenta<strong>i</strong>s foram adicionados à dieta basal 0,000%; 0,126%, 0,252%, 0,378%, 0,504% e 0,630% de sal comum em substituição ao material inerte, de forma a obter os níveis de 0,05%; 0,10%; 0,15%; 0,20%, 0,25% e 0,30% de sódio que constituíram os tratamentos, as dietas foram isoproteicas, isocalóricas e isocálcicas. O período experimental foi de 84 dias divididos em quatro períodos de 21 dias. Os parâmetros avaliados foram consumo de ração, taxa de postura, peso médio de ovos, massa de ovos, peso final e conversão alimentar por massa de ovos. Foi observado efeito quadrático para consumo de ração, taxa de postura, massa de ovos, peso final e conversão alimentar por massa de ovos e efeito linear para peso médio de ovos. O nível de sódio para codornas japonesas na fase de postura foi de 0,208%, referente a um consumo de 5,4g de sódio por dia.<strong> </strong></p><p><em>Sodium levels in food of Japanese quail in the laying phase</em></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong>: </strong>Objective to evaluate the effect of different levels of sodium in the diet of Japanese quails. Were used 360 Japanese quail, with initial age of 120 days, distributed in a completely randomized block, with six treatments, six replications and 10 birds per experimental unit. Was observed quadratic effect on feed intake, egg production, egg mass, final weight and feed conversion per egg mass and linear effect for egg weight. The sodium level for Japanese quails is 0,208% with respect to an intake of 5,4g of sodium per day.</p><br /><strong></strong>

A study was conducted in order to estimate the sodium requirements of Japanese laying quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). In this study, we used 280 Japanese quails at 128 days of age, with an average weight of 9 ± 5.2 g, and an egg production rate of 82.3 ± 0.94%. An experimental design methodology was employed, completely randomized with five treatments and seven replications. Each replicate consisted of eight quails, with a total of thirty-five experimental units. The experimental diets were based on corn and soybean meal, and contained five different levels of sodium (0.08%, 0.12%, 0.16%, 0.20% and 0.24%). The diets were isocaloric and contained equal concentrations of amino acids, with an electrolyte balance of 250 mEq/kg. The parameters we evaluated were feed intake (g/quail/day); egg production per quail per day (%); egg weight (g); egg mass (g/quail/day); and feed conversion by egg mass (kg/kg) and per dozen eggs (kg/dz). In addition, we evaluated the composition of the eggs in terms of the absolute (g) and relative (%) mass of the yolk, albumen and eggshell. We also measured the body weight variation (g) and viability (%) of the quails. There were no significant effects (p>0.05) on the described parameters. No nutritional disorders occurred related to the level of inclusion of sodium in the diets. The inclusion of 0.08% sodium in the diet of laying Japanese quails was satisfactory to maintain egg production and quality without losses in feed intake or feed conversion.

The present study was developed using 864 Hy-Line W36 laying hens (42 to 58 weeks of age) with a randomized experimental design in a 4x3 factorial arrangement, with five replicates and 12 birds per experimental unit and 4 evaluation periods of 28 days each. The digestible lysine levels studied were 0.675%, 0.743%, 0.811% and 0.879%, and the digestible threonine levels were 0.542%, 0.596% and 0.650%. The performance and egg quality was evaluated. There were no significant effects on the egg production, specific gravity, albumen and yolk percentage and total solids in albumen and yolk for birds submitted to the different dietary digestible lysine and threonine levels. There was significant interaction between these amino acids on the egg shell percentage and Haugh unit in fresh eggs. There was a decreasing linear effect on the feed intake with increase of digestible lysine level. Egg weight, egg mass and feed conversion demonstrated a quadratic effect with the increase of the digestible lysine level with the best results in the diets with 0.754, 0.772 and 0.795% of digestible lysine, respectively.

This experiment was carried with Japanese quails in the egg production phase with the objective of determining the requirements of digestible methionine + cystine (M+C) for higher production and egg quality. A total of 240 Japanese quails were distributed in a randomized complete block design. The basal diet was supplemented with different DL-methionine levels, corresponding to digestible methionine + cystine levels of 0.55, 0.61, 0.67, 0.73 and 0.79%. The characteristics analyzed were feed intake (g/quail/day), egg production (%), egg weight (g), egg mass (g/quail/day), feed conversion (dozen eggs/egg mass and kg feed/dozen eggs), egg shell (% and g), albumen (% and g), yolk (% and g) and specific gravity (g/cm³). The digestible M+C level for Japanese quails was 0.696% in the diet, corresponding to a daily intake of 186.7 mg/quail.

The objective of this study was to evaluate different inclusion levels of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) from corn in the diet of quails. A total of 210 japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were distributed in a completely randomized design of five treatments and six replicates, with seven quails per experimental unit. The treatments used were: control feed; inclusion of 5, 10, 15 and 20% of DDGS. The variables assessed were: feed intake, feed conversion per dozen and egg mass, egg production, egg weight, specific gravity, yolk color and economic analysis. Data were analyzed by regression model and Dunnett’s test at 5% probability. For individual feed intake, laying rate, and feed conversion per egg mass, specific gravity and yolk color by color fan, there was effect caused by inclusion of DDGS (p < 0.05), but the other variables did not show significant difference. By Dunnett’s test, for feed intake, feed conversion per egg mass, specific gravity and digital colorimeter’s L parameter, there was effect (p < 0.05). As for economic analysis, DDGS presented low cost. It can be concluded that DDGS can be used in feed at a 20% level without impairing the performance and quality of quails eggs.

The aim of this research was evaluate the productive performance, egg quality and the endoparasites presence on Carijo laying hens in Cage Free system, fed with two experimental diets, one of them supplemented with fresh banana leaf in natura. Were used 196 laying hens with twenty-four weeks of age, distributed in a completely randomized design with 14 boxes, two experimental diets and seven replicates, by treatment with fourteen birds per experimental unit. The variables analyzed were: feed intake; egg production; egg mass: feed conversion per egg mass; feed conversion per dozen eggs; egg weight; albumen weight; yolk weight; shell weight; yolk percentage; albumen percentage shell percentage; yolk pigmentation and the presence of endoparasites. No influence (p > 0.05) were found, for performance and egg production, in Carijo laying hens fed supplemented with banana leaf in natura. For the treatment with inclusion of banana leaf, yolk pigmentation were superior (p < 0.05) when compared to control diet, producing eggs with more yolks orange color. In respect to endoparasite analysis, there was significant effect (p < 0.05) in the percentage of infections present in excretas. Among the treatments evaluated, the one with banana leaf supplementation reduced in 26.54% the endoparasites presence. The inclusion of banana leaf in the diet of Carijo laying hens does not affect performance and eggs quality and decreases the amount of endoparasites of the genus Strogyloides spp.

SUMMARY The current study aims to evaluate the zootechnical performance, quality of eggs, and the immune system of the laying hen's upon supplementing their feed with the flour of the mushroom Agaricus blazei. A total of 210 Hisex Brown® hens, 67 weeks old, were distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments (control [0%], 0.04%, 0.08%, 0.12% and 0.16% of mushroom meal) with seven replicates and six birds per experimental unit. Were evaluated the zootechnical performance (feed intake, egg production [per day and housed], marketable egg production, egg weight and egg mass, feed conversion per dozen and egg mass, and viability);egg quality (specific weight, Haugh units, weight and percentage of components, shell thickness and yellow intensity of the egg yolks); and the hemogram (erythrogram and leukogram). Mainly, different levels of mushroom meal, were includedin laying hens feeds significantly (p<0.05)egg mass and feed intake. However, the leukogram and the erythrogram remained within the reference values, indicating that the birds were healthy. The addition of different levels of Agaricus blazei flour in the laying hens feed did not promote changes in the egg quality, in the immune system, and in the zootechnical performance, except for the feed intake which reduced with the inclusion of mushroom flour and eggs mass in which the 0.07% level promoted the maximization of this parameter.

ABSTRACT: This trial was performed to determine the dietary digestible threonine-to-lysine (dig. Thr-to-Lys) ideal ratio for laying hens fed with low-protein diets from 24 to 40 weeks of age. At 24 weeks of age, two hundred forty Hy Line W-36 laying hens were randomly assigned to five treatments, represented by five dig Thr-to-Lys ratios (60; 67; 74; 81 and 88%), with eight replicates each one with six hens per experimental unit. Digestible Thr-to-Lys did not affect laying hen performance and egg quality, except for digestible Threonine intake, which showed linear increase as dig. Thr-to-Lys ratios increased. Linear broken-line model was chosen to analyze data according to lack of fit. According to linear broken-linen estimates, digestible Threonine ideal levels for optimum egg production, egg mass, feed efficiency of lysine utilization for egg mass, feed conversion per egg mass and dozens of eggs and nitrogen balance were 0.610; 0.580; 0.614; 0.599; 0.599 and 0.643%, which correspond respectively to dig Thr-to-Lys ratios of 80; 75; 80; 78; 78 and 83%. The digestible threonine-to-lysine ideal ratio for laying hens from 24 to 40 weeks of age is 80%.

This study was carried out to evaluate the energy levels in the diet to obtain better performance rates and quality of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle. One hundred and eighty Bovans Goldline laying hens with 62 weeks of age were used during four 28-day periods. A completely randomized experimental design was used with four metabolizable energy levels (2,650, 2,725, 2,800, 2,875 and 2,950 kcal/kg), each with six replicates of six birds. The energy level of diet did not affect the weight of the egg, yolk, albumen and eggshell, the percentages of yolk, albumen and eggshell, yolk color and egg specific gravity. Feed intake, egg production, egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass and per dozen eggs increased significantly with increasing levels of metabolizable energy. Feed intake decreased linearly as the energy level in the diet increased. The metabolizable energy levels showed a quadratic effect on egg production, egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass and per dozen eggs. The metabolizable energy level of 2,830 kcal/kg was the most appropriate to promote better performance and quality of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle.
