Abstract Water quality, chlorophyll a, phytoplankton, proto and mezo-zooplankton abundance were spatiotemporally evaluated in an estuary receiving effluents from a Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei farm in Patos Lagoon estuary, Southern Brazil. Samples were taken before (BD) and; 1 day (1 PD) 5 days (5 PD), 10 days (10 PD), 20 days (20 PD) and 30 days (30 PD) after the effluents discharge. Some water quality parameters were affected by the effluents discharge; however, these changes were restricted to a distance of 20 m from the effluent discharge channel for a period of 5 days. The microbial community was dominated by chlorophyceae, followed by diatoms, cyanobacteria and ciliates. There was an increase in the abundance of different groups on the 1 PD sampling compared to BD. The zooplankton abundance was low in practically all sites, except for 30 PD sampling. The meso-zooplanktonic organisms were represented by copepods, mostly Acartia tonsa. Despite some effects on water quality and phytoplankton and protozooplankton abundance until 5 PD sampling, these alterations dissipated in a short period of time. We conclude that the environment quickly assimilated the effluents discharge, and the water quality parameters remained within the limits stipulated by standard guidelines.

This study evaluated the protein requirement of Litopenaeus vannamei post-larvae during the initial rearing phase in a biofloc system. Five different diets were evaluated with increasing concentrations of crude protein: 31.28, 36.29, 41.57, 46.34, and 51.74 g 100 g-1 CP. Post-larvae (0.16 ± 0.01 g) were stocked at a density of 450 PL m-3 in 400 L tanks. Water quality parameters were maintained within the limits recommended for shrimp farming. After 38 days, a regression analysis revealed that levels of CP content (65.29 – 72.83%), EE (10.45 – 11.65%) and body N (10.45 – 11.64%) increased with increasing protein levels in the diet. A similar trend was observed in the biofloc sludge with respect to CP and N. Survival exceeded 80%, and the shrimp with diets containing 31.28 to 46.34g 100 g-1 CP presented an increase in final weight (1.52 – 2.61 g), productivity (0.69 – 1.10 Kg m-3), weight gain (1.38 – 2.44 g), and feeding efficiency (77.28 – 101.68%), whereas these indices decreased to51.74 g 100 g-1 CP. Crude protein content from 44.26 to 47.12 g 100 g-1 provided the best growth performance during the initial rearing phase of Pacific white shrimp in a biofloc system.

Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is new species were culture to replace tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) in Purworejo village, Pasir Sakti sub-district of East Lampung residence. This study was purposed to investigate culture performances of Pacific white shrimp in semi intensive system in two farmer groups. Eight ponds with ± 2100 m2/ ponds and density of 60 ind/m2 was used for this study. Results showed that Pacific white shrimp performances was different among two farmer groups. Sido Makmur group showed better performance compared to Lestari Gemilang with showed of ponds productivity 1337,8 kg and 1330,3 kg, respectively. FCR and SR among two groups also showed different, there were 1,88 to 2,39 and 86,95% to 63,3%, respectively. High mortality after WSSV infection was decreased pond productivity. Water quality parameters such as ammonia (0,029-0,031 ppm) and light density (<40 cm) were not suitable for shrimp culture impacted to pond productivity. WSSV infection and water quality parameters had corellation to pond performances.

Influence of water quality parameters on zooplankton abundance and biomass in the Merbok estuary Malaysia were investigated. Twenty four hours sampling were conducted at station 1, 3 and 5 from 12th November (spring tide) to 3rd December (neap tide) 2011 on weekly interval. Results showed that water quality parameters varied with the following ranges: conductivity (10.00-315.00?S-1cm), transparency (25.50-154.00 cm), light intensity (53.5-1959.00 lux), TSS (20-70 mg-1L), BOD (0.25-3.46 mg-1L) and chl a (0.1-1.46 ?g-1L). The highest zooplankton abundance was found at Station 5 (176×103) and (230×103) ind-3m and the lowest was at station 1(5.3×103) and (3.4 ×103) ind-3m during spring and neap tide. Zooplankton biomass varied from 0.04 to 0.096 gm-3m. Spearman’s rank correlation analysis results showed that there was a correlation among zooplankton abundance and conductivity, transparency, TSS, BOD, and biomass except chl and light intensity. Mann-Whitney U test result showed that water quality parameters, zooplankton abundance and zooplankton biomass were significantly different between spring and neap tides.J. Environ. Abstract One closed uncontrolled landfill, the Neihu garbage dump, and one active controlled landfill, the Sanzhuku sanitary landfill, were selected for investigation of their leachate characteristics and effects on adjacent river water quality before and after rainfall in northern Taiwan. A total of seven samplings were made during February and June 2007, with four samplings done after individual rainfall events on study sites. Water quality of runoff samples collected from the Sanzhuku sanitary landfill showed less pollution than the water quality of leachates collected from the Neihu garbage dump; however, some water quality levels of leachate samples collected from the Neihu garbage dump were relatively high, such as ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), orthophosphate (PO43-) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). At the uncontrolled dump, rainfall lead to dilution effects on river water NH3-N and PO43- concentrations, but not other water quality parameters. In contrast, the concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA) and nonylphenol were increased in both types of landfills after rainfall in the present study. Dilution effects of rainfall on most water quality parameters and toxicity tests were observed in the Neihu garbage dump leachates after rainfall, but not for the Sanzhuku Landfill runoff. The highest concentration of BPA measured in this study was 25.8 μg L-1 in the Sanzhuku sanitary landfill runoff after the heaviest rainfall event, during which 236 mm of rainfall accumulated over four days. The results of this study suggest that both uncontrolled and controlled landfill leachates can be an important potential pollution source of BPA to adjacent water bodies.

An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of aeration using blower on growth and production of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in intensive aquaculture system in six (6) earthen ponds at BAU campus, Mymensingh from May to September, 2016. Treatment 1 (T1) with 3 aerated ponds and Treatment 2 (T2) with 3 non-aerated ponds were designed with similar stocking density (300/decimal) of tilapia. Oxygen supply was ensured by blower for 9 hours daily when oxygen depletion occurs in pond water. Fish growth, pond water and soil quality parameters were sampled and assessed. The DO content in the aerated ponds was higher (7.23 mg/l) from the beginning to the end of experiment compared to non-aerated ponds (2.33 mg/l). There were significant differences (p<0.05) of DO content between two treatments at first and last sampling stages. The higher length (15.64±1.56 cm) and weight gain (143.36±39.33 gm), higher SGR (% per day) for tilapia was (2.54±0.00) found in T1 compared to T2 (2.42±0.00) with significant differences (p<0.05) between two treatments. In addition, the higher production of tilapia was obtained in T1 (9581.87±0.00 kg/ha/100 days) compared to T2 (6490.80±0.00 kg/ha/100 days). The average phytoplankton production was relatively higher in T2 and conversely zooplankton abundance was higher in T1 without any significant differences (p>0.05) between the treatments for the abundances of various groups of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Different water quality parameters were found with the better range in aerated ponds. Various intrinsic relationships between DO and other water quality and weather parameters showed that DO content had negative relationships with rainfall, air pressure and humidity but the relationships were not statistically significant. Moreover, different soil quality parameters of pond sediments were found in ideal range for fish culture in both treatments. These results suggest that aeration can be a potential mechanism of aqua-farming to enhance the growth and production of tilapia and DO content in pond water synchronizing other water quality parameters in ponds.J. Water quality parameters play an important role in intensive pond ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between of water quality parameters in intensive shrimp farming of L. vannamei. This research was carried out for 95 days of intensive shrimp farming in PT. Menjangan Mas Nusantara Company, Banten, with the physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters of water as the main reference object of observation. The results showed that during the shrimp culture period the pond water quality parameter concentration was considered to be quite optimal with a stable fluctuation trend, except for the salinity and TOM parameters whose values ​​were above the water quality standard. Correlation test results state that between the physical chemical parameters have a strong and heterogeneous relationship, with the strongest parameters of pH, phosphate, nitrite, and TOM. As for the microbiological variables, the correlation of physical chemistry parameters of water is considered to be very weak, because from the correlation test results, only DO parameters showed the correlation with microbiological parameters. The conclusion of this study, that during intensive shrimp culture period, the physical and chemical parameters of water have a strong correlation of association between one another and the highest are pH, phosphate, nitrite, and TOM, but only dissolved oxygen parameters that show the relationship correlation with microbiological parameters.

The effect of two concentrations of an aqueous extract of the San Pedro Daisy, (Lasianthaea podocephala Gray) roots was evaluated on the water quality, physiological condition and production parameters of the white Pacific shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone), farmed under intensive laboratory conditions. Two treatments and a control were considered: T1 (1 mL of extract per aquarium), T2 (3 mL of the extract per aquarium) and C (control, 0 mL of the extract). No negative effects of the treatments on water quality parameters were observed, which ranged into acceptable limits and without significant differences (P < 0,05). Some of the production parameters such as final biomass and FCA were slightly better in the treatments using the extract. The concentration of haemolymph metabolites indicate that shrimp from treatments with the extract were under better conditions, suggested by the levels of protein and cholesterol in the muscle; moreover, the gene expression results suggest that the extract could have an immunostimulatory effect on shrimp. However, additional studies are required to evaluate the active ingredients of the root extract at the molecular level in order to have more information for the potential use of the plant.

The use of sodium chloride (0.5 g/L and 1 g/L) and zeolite (22.7 g/L) during shipment (48 h) of Ancistrus triradiatus at high temperatures (between 24.5 and 34ºC) were evaluated. Several water quality parameters (dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, and total ammonia) were measured before and after shipment. Glycemia was measured before shipment and at 24 and 48 h after shipment. After shipment, a resistance test was carried out in a high concentration of sodium chloride, and mortality was recorded after shipment, and 7 days post-shipment. While the two evaluated substances increased survival of A. triradiatus challenged by high temperatures during shipment, the best result was obtained with 1 g/L of sodium chloride.
