Abstract Bioverm® (Duddingtonia flagrans) is a fungal formulation indicated for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants and horses, which has recently been authorized for commercialization in Brazil. The objective was to determine the efficiency of Bioverm® against larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle. Twelve animals were used, divided into two groups. In the treated group, a single dose of 1 g of Bioverm® per 10 kg of live weight (containing 105 chlamydospores of D. flagrans) was provided for each animal. Fecal samples were obtained from the animals in each group at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 hours after administration. In assay A, 2 g of feces were added to Petri dishes containing 2% agar-water medium. In assay B, coprocultures were performed. In both assays, the peak of larval predation occurred within 48 hours after administration of Bioverm®. In assay A, a significant larval reduction (P < 0.05) was seen at 48 h (88.2%). In assay B, significant reductions (P < 0.05) were seen at 36 h (43.7%) and 48 h (82.3%). Bioverm® showed high predatory capacity after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle and was effective for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes.

AbstractThe use ofDuddingtonia flagransin the control of goat nematodes was investigated. Initially, the time of passage of chlamydospores through the digestive tract of goats was evaluated. Two groups of seven parasite-free kids were formed. Group A received a single dose of 3.5×106D. flagranschlamydospores (FTHO-8 strain) per kg of live weight. Group B did not receive any chlamydospores. Faeces were obtained from each kid daily from day 4 prior to inoculation until day 5 post-inoculation (PI) and were placed in Petri dishes containing water agar. Gastrointestinal nematode infective larvae were added to each Petri dish and incubated at 25°C for 7 days. Petri dishes were examined to detect the fungus and trapped nematodes. A second trial evaluated the effect ofD. flagranson the number of gastrointestinal nematode larvae harvested from goat faecal cultures in naturally infected goats. Two groups of seven goats were formed. The treated group received a single dose of 3.5×106D. flagranschlamydospores per kg of liveweight. The control group did not receive any chlamydospores. Faeces were obtained twice daily from each kid. Two faecal cultures were made for each kid. One was incubated for 7 days and the other for 14 days. Gastrointestinal nematode larvae were recovered from each culture and counted. Percentage of larval development reduction was determined using a ratio of larvae/eggs deposited in the control and treated groups.Duddingtonia flagranssurvived the digestive process of goats, and maintained its predatory activity, being observed from 21 to 81 h PI (3 to 4 days). A reduction in the infective larvae population in the treated group compared to the non-treated group was observed in both incubation periods (7 days: 5.3–36.0%; 14 days: 0–52.8%,P>0.05). Although a single inoculation ofD. flagranscan induce a reduction of infective larvae collected from faeces, a different scheme of dosing may be needed to enhance the efficacy ofD. flagransin goats.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin, levamisole HCl and albendazole against gastrointestinal nematodes in naturally infected goats of government goat development farm, Sylhet, Bangladesh. The study included 52 black Bengal breed of which 30 were naturally infected and randomly selected 20 on the basis of their weight and egg count. Twenty black Bengal goats of 12-13 month old irrespective of sex infested with gastrointestinal nematodes were selected for this experiment and randomly divided into four equal groups (group A, B, C and D) where each group consisted of 5 goats and goats of group D were kept as control group. One injectable ivermectin (200?gkg-1 body weight, S/C) preparations (Techno Drugs Ltd. Bangladesh) and two solid levamisole HCl, albendazole (7.5 mgkg-1 body weight, orally) preparations (The ACME Laboratories Ltd. and Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Bangladesh) were used for positive control of gastrointestinal nematodes as group A, B and C. Goats of group D was kept as control without giving any treatment. Before trials (day 0), total egg count, blood samples and initial body weight were recorded. During the study period the fecal and blood samples were collected directly from rectum and examined on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day using McMaster fecal egg counting method. Body weight was recorded on day 28 following the treatments. The results of the comparative efficacies of different anthelmintic of ivermectin was 86.75%, followed by levamisole HCl 85.07% and albendazole 92.81%. McMaster fecal egg counting method discloses the percentage of Haemonchus spp. (15.38%), with Trichostrongylus spp, Strongyloides spp., and Cooperia spp. also present. After treatment with ivermectin, levamisole HCl and albendazole, Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC), Hemoglobin (Hb) content and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were increased significantly (p<0.01 and p>0.05) in goats but Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) were decreased significantly (p<0.05 and p>0.01) in all treated goat and body weight was increased significantly (p<0.01) on day 28.International Journal of Natural Sciences (2015), 5(1) 26-34

The article presents the results of experiment on testing a prolonged form of the Iverlong drug against gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. The work was carried out on 30 lambs. The lambs of the first group were subcutaneously injected with the Iverlong preparation at a dose of 1 ml/50 kg of live weight (in 1 ml of 50 mg of Ivermectin plus PLGA prolongator), the lambs of the second group were treated with the same preparation, but at a dose of 0.5 ml/50 kg of live weight. The lambs of the third group served as a control, which were subcutaneously injected with the well-known Ivomek drug in the recommended dose (1 ml/50 kg of live weight). The effectiveness from the prolonged form of Iverlong in 2 doses against nematodes of the gastrointestinal tract was taken into account by means of coprological studies before drug administration and every 15 days for three months. According to the results of coprological studies, it was found that the Iverlong drug in a dose of 1ml/50 kg of the animal’s live weight showed a high prolonged anthelmintic effect and for 60 days protected animals from infection by nematodes of the gastrointestinal tract.

The experiment was carried out to determine the efficacy of Ivermectin (Ivomec® S/C Formulation) against gastrointestinal nematodiasis and ectoparasites including stephanofilaria on crossbred cattle, to determine the effect of drug on certain hematological parameters like hemoglobin (Hb) content, packed cell volume (PCV) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)in crossbred cattle and to determine the effect of the drug on live weight. A total of 100 cattle were selected randomly and examined for presence of both endo and ectoparasites including stephanofilaria. Gastrointestinal nematodiasis were detected by examination of fecal samples and ectoparasites as well as stephanofilaria were detected by physical examination. Out of 100 cattle, 20 were found to suffer from both endo and ectoparasites. These 20 cattle were selected finally for the research work. Then these cattle were divided into two groups, group A (treated group, n=15) and group B (control group, n=5). Ivermectin was injected subcutaneously to the cattle of group A @ 200µm/kg body weight (1ml/50 kg body weight). The therapeutic efficacy of the drug against gastrointestinal nematodiasis was determined by investigation of fecal egg count reduction and the efficacy was 100% against the common nematodes in crossbred cattle on day 7, 14, 21 and 28 of post treatment period. Ticks within a markable area (25 square inches) were counted on day 0 and lice infestation was marked as infected on day 0. Ivermectin showed 100% effectiveness at the 7, 14, 21 and 28 day of post treatment period against both tick and lice infestation. The efficacy of the drug against stephanofilariasis (humpsore) was determined by reduction of diameter of the sore on the day 14, 42 and 56 of post treatment period. All the sores were completely healed up by the 56 days. During the study of hematological parameters it was seen that Hb and PCV were increased whereas ESR values were decreased on post treatment days. In this study the mean live weight of the cattle of treated group was increased after treatment with ivermectin and increased body weight was 5.13% on the 28th day of post treatment period. From the above findings it may be concluded that ivermectin was 100% effective against gastrointestinal nematodes common in crossbred cattle. Effectiveness of the drug against external parasites was 100%. In this study hematological parameters were changed significantly after treatment with ivermectin, body weight of animal treated with ivermectin was increased and no adverse effect of the drug was found in this study.

AbstractThe predatory capacity of nematophagous fungi Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001), Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34a), M. appendiculatum (CGI), M. sinense (SF53), Arthrobotrys conoides (I-40), A. cladodes (CG719) and A. robusta (I-31) on infective Ancylostoma sp. larvae (L3) was evaluated. Compared with the control without fungi there was a significant reduction (P < 0.05) of 87.02%, 82.74%, 47.93%, 60.49%, 76.89%, 71.33% and 86.02% in the mean number of Ancylostoma sp. (L3) recovered from treatments with the isolates AC001, NF34a, CGI, SF53, I-40, CG719 and I-31, respectively. Isolates AC001, I-31 and NF34a were more effective in capturing L3 during the in vitro assay. Isolates were then in vivo evaluated for the capacity to remain viable after passing through the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, while still maintaining their predatory activity against L3. Fungal isolates survived the passage and showed efficient predation 48 h after fungal administration to the dogs (P < 0.05). After this time, only the isolate NF34a remained effective up to 96 h after administration (P < 0.05). Monacrosporium thaumasium, D. flagrans and A. robusta are potential biological control agents of Ancylostoma sp. in dogs.

AbstractThe efficacy of the nematode-trapping fungusDuddingtonia flagransagainst infections by trichostrongyle nematodes in sheep was assessed throughout 6 months. Twenty Ile de France lambs were divided into two groups (control and treated groups), which were kept in separate pastures. Animals of the treated group were fed withD. flagranstwice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays). Pellets were prepared with the fungus mycelia in liquid culture medium and contained approximately 20% fungus. They were mixed with the animals' diet at a concentration of 1 g pellet per 10 kg live weight. Faecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), total serum protein and the animals' body weight were determined fortnightly from 7 October 2005 to 24 March 2006. Comparison of such parameters between groups showed no significant differences (P> 0.05), except on 10 February 2006, when the control group presented a higher mean FEC than the treated group (P<  0.05). Feeding sheep with pellets containingD. flagranshad no benefit to the prophylaxis of nematode infections under the experimental conditions used in the present study.

Abstract Biological control is a strategy to decrease parasitic populations, and the action takes place through natural antagonists in the environment. We studied the predatory activity of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans in infective larvae (L3) of gastrointestinal nematodes after gastrointestinal transit. Ten heifers were divided into two groups: treated (animals received pellets containing fungus) and control (animals received pellets without fungus). Twelve hours after administration, faeces samples were collected for in vitro efficacy tests. The animals then remained for 7 h in the experimental pasture area. At the end of this period, 20 faecal pads (ten treated and ten control) were selected at random. Pasture, faecal pad and soil collections occurred with an interval of 7 days, totalling four assessments. In vitro activity demonstrated that fungi effectively preyed on L3, achieving a reduction percentage of 88%. In the faecal pad of the pasture area, there was a difference (P < 0.05) between collections 3 and 4 for both groups; in the treated group a reduction of 65% was obtained, while in the control group there was an increase of 217% in the number of L3. The recovery of L3 in the soil and in the pasture was similar in both groups. There was no influence (P = 0.87) of the passage time on the fungus predatory activity. Duddingtonia flagrans demonstrated the ability to survive gastrointestinal transit in the animals, reducing the number of L3 in the faeces, indicating that this biological control has great potential in the control of worm infections.

Resistance structures such as chlamydospores produced by the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans allow the reduction of infectious larvae from gastrointestinal nematodes. The objective of this research was to study the effect of carbon and nitrogen sources on the production of chlamydospores of the fungus in a solid state fermentation system (SSF). Twelve substances were studied using a statistical strategy, evaluating their effect on the production of Chlamydospores Finally, using an optimization strategy, the modifications of the substances that favor the production of chlamydospores were defined, and the effect of these on the predatory capacity of the fungus was evaluated. Optimal conditions were the variability of 0.25% w / w ammonium sulfate and 0.56% w / w sodium acetate in broken rice. The maximum concentration reached under this condition was 2.27x107 chlamydospores g of dry substrate-1, with a productivity of 1.62x106 chlamydospores g of dry substrate-1 day-1.

Effect of feed supplementation to does grazed on naturally grown grasses during pre-partum on growth, reproduction and lactation performances of does and growth of the kids were investigated. Fifteen two-toothed and non-pregnant does of about one and half year of age constituted the experimental animals which were randomly allocated in the three groups of 5 and offered A) grazing ad libitum + l00g Mashkalai + 100g Wheat bran, B) grazing ad libitum + 50g Mashkalai + 50g Wheat bran and C) grazing ad libitum. The dry matter intake (DMI) between supplemented groups of A and B were almost similar (90 and 89g/kg w0.75/d respectively) and 12% higher than the control group C (80g/ kg w0.75/d). This DMI represent 4.6, 4.5 and 4.1% of live weight for group A, B and C, respectively. Does in treated group A consumed 30 and 62% more CP than group B and control group C, respectively. Similarly, group B consumed about 25% more CP than group C. There was no effect of grazing and supplementation before the pre-partum period on milk yield between treated group (A and B) and control group C (Av. 157 ml and 156 ml/d, respectively), rearing rate and growth of the suckling kids. Present study suggests that provision of grazing and supplementary feeding increases nutrients intake of does but appear to have no influence on milk yield. Higher prolificacy of Black Bengal goat may not bring any benefit unless milk production is increased.http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjas.v41i1.11975

The purpose of the research is studying the efficacy of Eprimek (Eprinomectin) against gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep.Materials and methods. A commercial experiment to study the antiparasitic efficacy of Eprimek was carried out in June 2020 on 300 lambs of the North Caucasian breed in a private flock of Filimonovskaya Village, Izobilnensky District, the Stavropol Territory, which were divided into two groups. The experimental group of lambs (290 animals) was injected Eprimek subcutaneously at the earset at a dose of 1 ml/50 kg of live weight (10 mg of Eprinomectin in 1 ml), and 10 lambs were not treated; they were used as control. We collected feces from the lambs of the experimental and control groups before administration of the drugs and after 15 and 30 days. Fecal samples were examined by the flotation technique with a saturated solution of ammonium nitrate with counting nematode eggs in 1 g of feces. The results were processed statistically.Results and discussion. Eprimek showed a decrease in the number of excreted helminth eggs from 225.1±28.2 to 4.1±2.3 in production environment at a dose of 1 ml/50 kg of live weight, according to coprological studies on the 15th day after treatment in the experimental group of lambs. The efficacy was 98.2%, and 70% of the animals were free from the infection. The intensity of infection of the control lambs by gastrointestinal nematodes was 131–151 eggs per 1 g of feces at 100% prevalence.
