Cartographic generalization research has focused almost exclusively in recent years on topographic mapping, and has thereby gained an incorrect reputation for having to do only with reference or positional data. The generalization research community needs to broaden its scope to include thematic cartography and geovisualization. Generalization is not new to these areas of cartography, and has in fact always been involved in thematic geographic visualization, despite rarely being acknowledged. We illustrate this involvement with several examples of famous, public-audience thematic maps, noting the generalization procedures involved in drawing each, both across their basemap and thematic layers. We also consider, for each map example we note, which generalization operators were crucial to the formation of the map’s thematic message. The many incremental gains made by the cartographic generalization research community while treating reference data can be brought to bear on thematic cartography in the same way they were used implicitly on the well-known thematic maps we highlight here as examples.

Professor Maria Glazovskaya (1912–2016) – an outstanding geographer, geochemist and soil scientist, made a prominent contribution to the formation and development of several aspects of thematic mapping both in conceptual and methodological issues. These aspects, namely, soil, landscape- and soil-geochemical, as well as ecological mapping, were derived from the knowledge on soils combined with the concepts of geochemical migrations facilities for certain chemical elements in soils and landscapes. Methodology of compilation of such maps presumes purposeful interpretation of diverse soil and landscape features, their expert evaluation and forecast of response reactions of soils and landscapes to certain technogenic loads. Maria Glazovskaya proposed innovative approaches to thematic mapping enabling her to compile original maps. She introduced the principle of “prognostic information capacity of natural factors”, which means that properties of landscape components contain information appropriate for evaluating the resilience of natural systems. The ideas and methods proposed by Maria Glazovskaya are now implemented in basic and applied thematic mapping.

The importance of combining spatial and temporal aspects has been increasingly recognized over recent years, yet pertinent pattern analysis methods in place-based crime research still need further development to explicitly indicate spatial-temporal localities of pertinent factors’ influence ranges. This paper proposes an approach, Spatial-Temporal Indication of Crime Association (STICA), to facilitate identifying the main contributing factors of crime, which are operated at diverse spatial-temporal scales. The method’s rationale is to progressively discern the spatial zones with diverse temporal crime patterns. A specific implementation of the STICA approach, by combining kernel density estimation, k-median-centers clustering, and thematic mapping, is applied to understand the burglary in an urban peninsula, China. The empirical findings include: (1) both the main time-stable and time-varying factors of crime can be indicated with the disparities of temporal crime patterns for different spatial zones based on the STICA results. (2) The spatial range of these factors can enlighten the understanding of interactions for generating crime patterns, especially with regards to how temporally transient and spatially global factors can produce a locally crime-ridden zone through the mediation of stable factors. (3) The STICA results can reveal the spatially contextual effects of stable factors, which are of great value to improve modeling crime patterns. As demonstrated, the STICA approach is effective in exploring contributing factors of crime and has shown great potential for providing a new vision in place-based crime research.

Abstract Introduction: Geographical Information System (GIS) and spatial analysis have an emerging role in the understanding and management of health-related outcomes. However, there is a knowledge gap about the extent to which GIS has supported Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research. Therefore, this review aimed to explore the types of GIS applications and the complexity of their visualisation in MS research. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted based on York’s five-stage framework. PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were searched for relevant studies published between 2000 and 2020 using a comprehensive search strategy based on the main concepts related to GIS and MS. Grounded, inductive analysis was conducted to organize studies into meaningful application areas. Further, we developed a tool to assess the visualisation complexity of the selected papers.Results: Of 3,723 identified unique citations, 42 papers met our inclusion criteria for the final review. One or more of the following types of GIS applications were reported by these studies: (a) thematic mapping (37 papers); (b) spatial cluster detection (16 papers); (c) risk factors detection (16 papers); and (d) health access and planning (two papers). In the majority of studies (88%), the score of visualisation complexity was relatively low: three or less from the range of zero to six. Conclusions: Although the number of studies using GIS techniques has dramatically increased in the last decade, the use of GIS in the areas of MS access and planning is still under-researched. Additionally, the capacity of GIS in visualising complex nature of MS care system is not yet fully investigated.

This paper presents an effective approach to integrating airborne lidar data and colour imagery acquired simultaneously for urban mapping. Texture and height information extracted from lidar point cloud is integrated with spectral channels of aerial imagery into an image segmentation process. Then, the segmented polygons are integrated with the extracted geometric features (height information between first- and lastreturn, eigenvalue-based local variation and filtered height data) and spectral features (line segments) into a supervised classifier. The results for two different urban areas in Toronto, Canada, demonstrated that a satisfactory overall accuracy of 84.96% and Kappa of 0.76 were achieved in Scene I, while a building detection rate of 92.11%, comission error of 2.10% and omission error of 9.25% were obtained in Scene II.

AbstractMaps and plans represent essential tools of the trade for planners and applied earth scientists alike, and thematic maps produced by geologists should be able to be understood by planners. Geology, geotechnics, geomorphology, hydrogeology and related sciences can provide essential data on some of the constraints to development and resources for development. Recognition of these permits safer, more cost- effective planning and development, and allows rational decisions to be taken as far as the exploitation of resources is concerned. Consequently the Department of Environment had been commissioning research to investigate the best means of collecting, collating, interpreting and presenting, in sets of maps and reports, geological results of direct applicability to land-use planning. For example, some years ago initial studies in thematic mapping were undertaken by the British Geological Survey and more recently a number of private consultants have carried out such work. Unfortunately, the results of some of these surveys have not, as yet, been published.
