The proposed work is focused on the tuning of the latent-heat storage of a PCM with MWCNT encapsulation for a chiller system in the milk-pasteurization process using an RSM-based predictive Smith controller. The PCM was synthesized using sodium polyacrylate and MWCNT particles, encapsulated in spherical balls stored in the IBT (ice bank tank of the chiller unit). Experimental work is conducted on the heat-transfer characteristics of the chiller unit with servo-operated flow-control valves based on the central composite design of experiments. The system is cascaded using a PID controller with a Smith predictor to stabilize the latent temperature of milk cooling in the chiller system. The system is considered to be a first-order transformation with the rise and settling time. The plant model is obtained, using the response-surface method based on the transfer function to minimize the error derivatives of the chiller system. Results of the proposed method show a robust performance in keeping the PCM temperatures and bacterial-growth value stabilized, allowing a less drastic control compared to the cascade-model predictive control.

With invariable time delay theoretically,Smith predictor is deeply studied,the fact that the Smith predictor depends on the math model of the system is found ,and so it is very difficult to control the time-varying delay system well. Therefore,it is necessary to take an effective method--using PID controller with the digital Smith predictor,and studying its control algorithm,and doing the simulation in the lab of micro-computer control. Simulation results have proved the efficiency of the algorithm and the validity.

Latent heat storage has shown a great potential in many engineering applications. The utilization of latent heat storage has been extended from small scales to large scales of thermal engineering applications. In food industry, latent heat has been applied in food storage. Another potential application of latent heat storage is to maintain hot beverages at a reasonable drinking temperature for longer periods. In the present work, a numerical calculation was performed to investigate the impact of utilizing encapsulated phase change material PCM on the temperature of hot beverage. The PCM was encapsulated in rings inside the cup. The results showed that the encapsulated PCM reduced the coffee temperature to an acceptable temperature in shorter time. In addition, the PCM maintained the hot beverage temperature at an acceptable drinking temperature for rational time.

It is proved that the relative entropy for reactions with an equilibrium constant smaller than or equal to one is completely monotonic in the whole definition interval, and for reactions with an equilibrium constant larger than one this function is completely monotonic at the beginning of the reaction and near to equilibrium.

It is well known that attaching fins on the tubes surfaces can enhance the heat transfer into and out from the phase change materials (PCMs). This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the thermal characteristics of finned coil latent heat storage unit (LHSU) using paraffin as the phase change material (PCM). The paraffin LHSU is a rectangular cube consists of continuous horizontal multibended tubes attached vertical fins at the pitches of 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mm that creates the heat transfer surface. The shell side along with the space around the tubes and fins is filled with the material RT54 allocated to store energy of water, which flows inside the tubes as heat transfer fluid (HTF). The measurement is carried out under four different water flow rates: 1.01, 1.30, 1.50, and 1.70 L/min in the charging and discharging process, respectively. The temperature of paraffin and water, charging and discharging wattage, and heat transfer coefficient are plotted in relation to the working time and water flow rate.

AbstractThe processes which contain at least one pole at the origin are known as integrating systems. The process output varies continuously with time at certain speed when they are disturbed from the equilibrium operating point by any environment disturbance/change in input conditions and thus they are considered as non-self-regulating. In most occasions this phenomenon is very disadvantageous and dangerous. Therefore it is always a challenging task to efficient control such kind of processes. Depending upon the number of poles present at the origin and also on the location of other poles in transfer function different types of integrating systems exist. Stable first order plus time delay systems with an integrator (FOPTDI), unstable first order plus time delay systems with an integrator (UFOPTDI), pure integrating plus time delay (PIPTD) systems and double integrating plus time delay (DIPTD) systems are the classifications of integrating systems. By using a well-controlled positioning stage the advances in micro and nano metrology are inevitable in order satisfy the need to maintain the product quality of miniaturized components. As proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are very simple to tune, easy to understand and robust in control they are widely implemented in many of the chemical process industries. In industries this PID control is the most common control algorithm used and also this has been universally accepted in industrial control. In a wide range of operating conditions the popularity of PID controllers can be attributed partly to their robust performance and partly to their functional simplicity which allows engineers to operate them in a simple, straight forward manner. One of the accepted control algorithms by the process industries is the PID control. However, in order to accomplish high precision positioning performance and to build a robust controller tuning of the key parameters in a PID controller is most inevitable. Therefore, for PID controllers many tuning methods are proposed. the main factors that lead to lifetime reduction in gain loss of PID parameters are described in This paper and also the main methods used for gain tuning based on optimization approach analysis is reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of each one are outlined and some future directions for research are analyzed.

A compliant constant-force actuator based on the cylinder is an important tool for the contact operation of robots. Due to the nonlinearity and time delay of the pneumatic system, the traditional proportional–integral–derivative (PID) method for constant force control does not work so well. In this paper, an improved PID control method combining a backpropagation (BP) neural network and the Smith predictor is proposed. Through MATLAB simulation and experimental validation, the results show that the proposed method can shorten the maximum overshoot and the adjustment time compared with traditional the PID method.

The article reviews the results of a number of recent papers dealing with the revision of the simplest approaches to the control of first-order time-delayed systems. The concise introductory review is extended by an analysis of two discrete-time approaches to dead-time compensation control of stable, integrating, and unstable first-order dead-time processes including simple diagnostics of the model used and focusing on the possibility of simplified but reliable plant modelling. The first approach, based on the first historically known dead-time compensator (DTC) with possible dead-beat performance, is based on the reconstruction of the actual process variables and the compensation of input disturbances by an extended state observer (ESO). Such solutions play an important role both in a disturbance observer (DOB) based control and in an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). The second approach considered comes from the Smith predictor with two degrees of freedom, which combines feedforward control with output disturbance reconstruction and compensation by the parallel plant model. It is shown that these two approaches offer advantageous properties in the case of actuator limitations, in contrast to the commonly used PID controllers. However, when applied to integrating and unstable first-order systems, the unconstrained and possibly unobservable output disturbance signal of the second solution must be eliminated from the control loop, due to the hidden structural instability of the Smith predictor-like solutions. The modified solutions, usually referred to as filtered Smith predictor (FSP), then no longer provide a disturbance signal and thus no longer fully fit into the concept of Industry 4.0, which is focused on further optimization, predictive maintenance in dynamic systems, diagnosis, fault detection and fault identification of dynamic processes and forms the basis for the digitalization of smart production. Nevertheless, the detailed analysis of the elimination of the unstable disturbance response mode is also worth mentioning in terms of other possible solutions. The application of both approaches to the control of a thermal process shows almost equivalent quality, but with different dependencies on the tuning parameters used. It is confirmed that a more detailed identification of the controlled process and the resulting higher complexity of the control algorithms does not necessarily lead to an increase in the resulting quality of the transients, which underlines the importance of the simplified plant modelling for practice.
