The article summarizes the practice of Russian publishers in the formation of the repertoire of graphic novels. In the modern world, visual perception of information is becoming an increasingly common way of obtaining and processing information. Graphic novels are forming an important part of contemporary culture in general and literature in particular, occupying a larger niche in the contemporary literary market. Publishers are trying to meet the needs of readers and include more and more series with graphic novels in their repertoire. The most successful projects in the publishing houses Bubble, Jellyfish Jam, Zodiac, 42!, Komil’fo, AST, specializing in graphic novels, are analyzed. The expansion of this book segment is continuous and quite fast. Summarizing the repertoire policy of Russian publishers, it can be asserted that graphic novels come to play an increasingly important role in modern society and in the modern book market, and they will be equal in importance to classical book editions in the future. Every year the number of graphic novels by Russian authors in the book market is growing. The repertoire of Russian publishers engaged in the production of graphic novels is quite diverse. Specialized publishers pay more attention to the projects produced, due to which there are fewer errors in the production of graphic novels in these publishers. The number of publications produced per year in specialized publishing houses is small, compared with large universal publishers. Projects of specialized publishers are more carefully selected, are often original or little-known in Russia. Each project of graphic novels by foreign authors is unique for a certain publishing house, and is not released in other publishing houses. The spread of circulations in specialized publishing houses is quite wide and often depends on the features of the project, the author’s fame, the features of the publication, as well as the niche of the publishing house. Large universal publishers mainly focus on graphic novels of widespread popularity, as a rule, within the Marvel, DC universes. All publishers considered in the study have a clear principle of development of their repertoire; in specialized publishers, the selection of projects is much more thoughtful, and each project is given more attention.

The paper discusses the development of a helper program "TypesetHelper", designed to facilitate the process of creating and translating comics. An analysis of functions of translation in modern society shows that translation, currently, is primarily a means of enabling communication between people who speak different languages. This applies, among other things, to such a specific niche as the translation of graphic novels, comics and manga. In the modern world, comics have become an integral part of popular culture, but in Ukraine, the culture of reading and translating comics is only at the stage of active formation. The purpose of this work is to create software that would facilitate the process of work with the inclusion of translated text in corresponding cleared illustrations. It is demonstrated that the existing software, including both general-purpose graphic editors like Adobe Photoshop and specialized programs for automatic recognition and translation of comics and manga, has disadvantages with respect to the problem being solved and can not be considered as a complete analogue of the software being developed. The functions that the program should perform include opening an image file, placing a text in a selected area, centering a text relative to a cloud, creating text layout, creating correct word division using automatic hyphenation methods, saving the image to a file. An analysis of possible methods of text layout when filling text clouds of various forms is given. The paper consider software design using the Unified Modeling Language (Use Case diagram, State Diagram, User Activity diagram) and its development using the C# programming language. Illustrations of the program operation process are given, which demonstrate its interface and examples of text division and layout using the selected methods. The developed helper program has practical value and can be used in comics and manga publishing houses, or for amateur translation. Keywords: text processing, comics, text layout, UML, C#.

Since the merger of Indigo and Chapters in 2001, and the bankruptcy of Stoddart Publishing and General Distribution Services in 2002, the Canadian publishing industry has faced perilous times in an already troubled market sector. In addition to the problems specific to the Canadian publishing industry- for example, federal and provincial funding cuts to the industry; the monopoly of the book retail market by the chain outlet Chapters-Indigo; the difficulty and expense of book distribution within Canada; competition from multinational publishing companies; the lack and expense of traditional marketing opportunities- the growing global market for books presents further difficulties for an industry that is struggling to retain its "Canadian" focus. This study considers the recent impact, both positive and negative, of globalization on the Canadian book industry, with a specific focus on publishers as the key figures in this industry. By surveying three publishing houses that represent specific segments of the industry- large multinational, mid-size, and small presses- I examine different approaches to surviving in the current book market and offer several conclusions about the future of Canadian publishing, most notably that the larger the publishing house, the less it is troubled by challenging market conditions.

The article is mainly devoted to the recent publications of translated Russian literature in Slovakia. In the first part of the article the situation of the 1990s which followed the decline of state management in editorial policy lasted from 1948 till 1989 is discussed. The influence of economic factors on book market turned most of the publishing houses to Western European and American literature. Thus in the last decade of the twentieth century mainly russian classics (Alexander Pushkin, Anton Chekhov, etc.) and the texts that could not be issuied until 1989 (Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Iosif Brodsky, “Doctor Zhivago” by Boris Pasternak) were published. The situation changed only in the new millennium, which was inspired by the phenomenon of the new generation of readers whom the available translations of russian literature were no longer suffucient, especially since they did not encounter the old ideologized approach to the selection of texts. Thanks to this, in recent years, Russian literature, including the most modern – Eugene Vodolaskin, Guzel Yakhina, etc., – again has managed to occupy the place in the Slovak cultural space that rightfully belongs to it.

For the first time, there is presented the comprehensive analysis of the works of Soviet artists of book of the second half of the 1920s, engaged in the book design of the collected works. The flood of the book market with multi-volumes of fiction can be considered a kind of revenge of “big forms”, reaction to the previous stage of book culture, where brochure played the leading role. In the second half of the 1920s, the collected works were most often published in soft-covers. Each volume could be issued as a separate book, strikingly different from the other volumes. This gave the artists a certain freedom of manoeuvre and allowed to break the ingrained stereotypes. There was widely used a spectacular technique: the cover drawing was the same for all volumes, but the colouring of each volume varied.The aim of the article is to expand the established ideas about the book design of the 1920s, to consider and introduce into scientific circulation the forgotten works of known artists. The author carried out the comparative analysis of the multi-volumes issued by the leading publishing houses of those years, using the complex of complementary methods: bibliological, art historical and general historical.Gosizdat was the undisputed leader in the quantitative indicators of publications of the collected works, but its artistic policy in that area was characterized by old-fashioned conservatism tended to minimize the visual elements. The famous publishing house “Academia” in those years published the collected works quite rarely, but enriched the art of book with graphic cycles of such outstanding masters as V.A. Favorsky and N.P. Akimov. The book designers of the publishing house “Zemlya i Fabrika” were particularly successful and consistent in updating the appearance of the collected works: their works had a broad stylistic range and tendency to experiment. Creative search of artists of the 1920s deserves the attention of book historians, designers, illustrators, publishers, because it can give them productive creative ideas.

The development of the system paradigm in economic science leads to the formulation of a number of important questions to the political economy as one of the basic directions of economic theory. In this article, on the basis of system introspection, three questions are considered. The first is the relevance of the class approach to the structuring of the socio-economic space; the second is the feasibility of revising the notion of property in the modern world; the third is the validity of the notion of changing formations as the sequence of “slave-owning system — feudal system — capitalist system”. It is shown that in modern society the system approach to the structuring of socio-economic space is more relevant than the class one. Today the classical notion of “property” does not reflect the diversity of production and economic relations in society and should be replaced by the notion of “system property”, which provides a significant expansion of the concepts of “subject of property” and “object of property”. The change of social formations along with the linear component has a more influential cyclic constituent and obeys the system-wide cyclic regularity that reflects the four-cycle sequence of the dominance of one of the subsystems of the macrosystem: project, object, environment and process.

The article focuses on the libraries and the publishing and book trading organizations established by Moscow students in the early twentieth century. These organizations were founded to make the textbooks more available, cheaper and less deficient than they were at the moment. As the resource of the textbooks, libraries of compatriots’ associations were widespread. At the Moscow University students publishing commissions (parts of benefit societies) printed lecture notes and examination programs. Library, publishing, and trading activities were tightly bound in these societies. In the Moscow Technical School and the Moscow Women High Courses the libraries and publishing houses functioned independently of each other and of economical organizations of students. The students Library of textbooks at the Moscow Agricultural Institute was really unique, as it combined library service with book publishing for a while. Book trade was usually managed by publishers. Besides students organizations within educational institutes, there functioned a cooperative bookstore and a publishing house at the same time, common for all Moscow students. A dream, that never came true, was a Students House and united library collections of textbooks in it. In spite of many complications, the cooperation was successful, and due to it, access to the textbooks was facilitated for many students.

The article is devoted to analyses of encyclopedia as philosophical genre reflected the statue of philo­sophical knowledge in Russian culture and it’s social and cultural resonance. The significance of this publication for the modern world philosophical commu­nity lies in the fact that the authors sought to bring together and present different opinions about Russia's intellectual culture and capture a holistic image of Rus­sian philosophy in the variety of its key directions.
