The history of the formation of the Herbarium of the Kuzbass Botanical Garden (KUZ) is given. The modern structure of the Herbarium collections (KUZ) is described. The directions of research carried out at the present time, the initial results of digitalization of herbarium collections are presented.

Endoleaks are a frequent complication of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) and will likely increase in incidence with application of the technique to more complicated aortic anatomy and a wider range of thoracic aortic pathologies. Management generally consists of aggressive repair of Type I endoleaks; however, the natural history of Type I endoleaks after TEVAR remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence and characteristics of Type I endoleaks and to evaluate clinical outcomes of patients with Type I endoleaks after TEVAR. A single-center retrospective review was performed on all patients who underwent TEVAR over a 4-year period. Type I endoleaks were detected in 21 per cent (27 of 129) of patients on post-deployment aortography or CT angiography. During a mean follow-up of 750.63 ± 483 days, 59 per cent (16 of 27) closed spontaneously; 30 per cent (eight of 27) required secondary endovascular intervention; and 11 per cent (three of 27) have persisted with no increase in maximum aortic diameter. No patients have died or required open surgical conversion as a result of their Type I endoleak. Although accurate predictors of spontaneous resolution of Type I endoleaks have yet to be definitively characterized, our initial results suggest that it may be safe to observe small Type I endoleaks given that a large percentage resolve spontaneously and no endoleak-related deaths have occurred.

Abstract In this article we reflect on the development of an educational fieldwork conducted along the Ipiranga River, in which we bring the debates concerning History of Science and Environmental Education closer together, by problematizing the social and environmental issues in the city of São Paulo in a contextualized and critical way. To that end, we established the limits for the hydrographic basin by highlighting the headwaters of the Ipiranga River and the changes it has undergone, as well as the political, sanitary and environmental meanings throughout the 20th Century. We associated the environmental issues with the history of two important institutions located along the river: The Botanical Garden and the Museu Paulista’s [São Paulo Museum] arboretum. We highlighted the practices, techniques and scientific representations that were developed on the sites, by valuing them as cultural heritage of the Brazilian science.

Two herbarium collections (NS and NSK) of the Central Siberian Botanical Garden SB RAS keep about 740,000 specimens of vascular plants, collected in Siberia, Russian Far East, Europe, Asia and North America. Genus Allium s. lat. Is presented by 6224 herbarium sheets, all of them were scanned using international standards: at a resolution of 600 dpi, the barcode for each specimen, 24-color scale and scale bar. Images and metadata are stored at the CSBG SB RAS Digital Herbarium, generated by ScanWizard Botany and MiVapp Botany software (Microtek, Taiwan). Datasets were published via IPT at the Global Biodiversity Information Facility portal (gbif.org). In total 207 species of the genus Allium are placed in the CSBS Digital Herbarium, which includes representatives from 13 subgenera and 49 sections of the genus. 35 type specimens of 18 species and subspecies of the genus Allium are hosted in CSBG Herbarium collections.

The German scholar Georg Marcgraf was the first trained astronomer in the New World and co-author of the earliest published natural history of Brazil, Historia naturalis Brasiliae (Leiden and Amsterdam 1648) (Fig. 1). Arriving in the Americas in 1638, Marcgraf took his place among a remarkable group of scholars and painters assembled at the Brazilian court of the German count Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen (1604–1679), the governor-general of Dutch Brazil from 1637–1644.1 Dutch Brazil was established by the Dutch West India Company (WIC), which was created in 1621 to engage in trade, conquest, and colonisation in the Americas and Africa. Except for Marcgraf, the most important members of the Count's entourage were Dutch and included the painters Albert Eckhout (c. 1610 - c. 1666) and Frans Post (1612–1680) and the physician Willem Piso (1611–1678). The rich group of scientific and visual materials they created are comparable in both scope and importance with the works created by Sydney Parkinson, William Hodges, and others during the Pacific voyages of Captain Cook in the eighteenth century.2 The Count's support of natural history, astronomy, and scientific and ethnographic illustration during his governorship was highly unusual, setting him apart from other colonial administrators and military leaders in the seventeenth century. Indeed, he is responsible for establishing both the first observatory and the first botanical garden in the New World, sparing no expense in creating a princely empire for himself in the Brazilian wilderness.

Abstract. Pulsating aurora is frequently observed in the evening and morning sector auroral oval. While the precipitating electrons span a wide range of energies, there is increasing evidence that the shape of pulsating auroral patches is controlled by structures in near-equatorial cold plasma; these patches appear to move with convection, for example. Given the tremendous and rapidly increasing amount of auroral image data from which the velocity of these patches can be inferred, it is timely to develop and implement techniques for the automatic identification of pulsating auroral patch events in these data and for the automatic determination of the velocity of individual patches from that data. As a first step towards this, we have implemented an automatic technique for determining patch velocities from sequences of images from the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) all-sky imager (ASI) and applied it to many pulsating aurora events. Here we demonstrate the use of this technique and present the initial results, including a comparison between ewograms (east–west keograms) and time series of patch position as determined by the algorithm. We discuss the implications of this technique for remote sensing convection in the inner magnetosphere.

 Lowland savannas, covering an area of 2,342 km2, form the third largest ecosystem in Belize yet are unevenly and therefore poorly represented in the country’s protected area system. Based on more than 5,700 herbarium collections, a checklist of 957 species of vascular plants is presented for this ecosystem representing ca. 28% of the Belizean flora, of which 54 species are new records for the country. Of the 41 species of plants known to be endemic to Belize, 18 have been recorded within the lowland savanna, and nine species are listed in The World Conservation Union (IUCN) 2010 Red List of Threatened Species. Of the total savanna ecosystem flora, 339 species are characteristic of the open savanna, whilst 309 and 114 species are more frequent in forest and wetland areas respectively. Most species (505, 53% of the lowland savanna flora) are herbaceous. Although the lowland savanna has been relatively well collected, there are geographical biases in botanical sampling which have focused historically on the savannas in the centre and the north of the country. A brief review of the collecting history of the lowland savanna is provided, and recommendations are given on how future collecting efforts may best be focused. The lowland savanna is shown to be a significant regional centre of plant diversity.

The main task of the expeditions was the search for the following species of natural Siberian flora and theintroduction of live plants and seeds to the Botanical Garden named after acad. A. V. Fomin: Cotoneaster mongolicus.C. neo-popvii, C. tjulinae, which are currently presented in our collection. In addition, long-term phenological observations in the conditions of the north-west of Ukraine allowed to isolate new species from the imported material: C. kyachticus.C. logginovii. They are described in the materials of the XIV and XVII conferences “Problems of botany of Southern Siberiaand Mongolia”. A trip to the lake Zun-Torei was dedicated to the search for C. mongolicus. As it turned out later, under theC. mongolicus mother’s plant, we dug up a plant different from the mother’s plant, to which we gave the name C. logginovii.This article provides materials to identify the parents pair in the formation of this hybrid pitchfork. For this purpose,materials of herbarium collections from the vicinity of the lake were used Zun-Torei experienced local botanists, as wellas personal fees. Comparison of the samples allowed to establish their identity with C. mongolicus, as well as to certify it asone of the parents of C. logginovii. Morphological descriptions of annual shoots leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds of three typesof Cotoneasters: C. megalocarpus, C. mongolicus, C. yakuticus; micrographs of endocarp of bones of the previous speciesand C. logginovii, C. melanocarpus, C. uniflorus are given. The herbarium samples of C. mongolicus collected in the areaof the lake Zun-Torey were analyzed. The material is illustrated with photographs of plants introduced in the north-westof Ukraine (Kiev). The introduction of plants by the method of genus complexes by F. N. Rusanov allowed to create theCotoneaster collection, which includes 200 taxa of the genus. In the Botanical Garden named after acad. A .V. Fomin fromthe flora of Siberia preserved 11 species of Cotoneaster: C. commixtus, C. kyachticus. C laxiflorus. C. logginovii, C. lucidus,C. neo-popovii, C. megalocarpus, C. mongolicus, C. tjulinae, C. uniflorus, C. yakuticus.

The history of the first facilities of st. Vladimir University and its situation in the city in 1830-40s were not in the centre of special research before. That’s why the first period of the university existing can’t be fully described. For this reason, the aim of the study is to highlight the history of the first leased buildings of st. Vladimir University in the context of the formation of university space. The term “university space” will be applied to describe all the facilities of the university. This multi-concept will be specifically used to research the university’s physical space (the area of university buildings). This article is a part of series of articles dedicated to the early stage of existence of the university in Kyiv. This series of articles is the first attempt to describe university space in Kyiv by locating university facilities in the city space. This is the first step of reconstructing of the university life in Kyiv and studying out what features of university and city communication were in that time. The last stage of university space expansion during the first period of its existence was highlighted in the article. Particular attention was paid to the details of buildings construction. Information about the owners of facilities was also given in the article. Places of the situation of university facilities in the city space of Kyiv were highlighted in this research. The main attention was paid to the details of the buildings of students’ hospital, university’s church, house of poor students, units of the botanical garden and medical faculty facilities. A lot of archived and cartographical sources were used for this purpose. The unknown archived documents were used in the article. The study analyzed details of lease contracts of employment of homes for St. Vladimir University. The article indicates which collections and departments were located in each of the leased buildings. The main conclusions show that university covered big yards not only buildings. The facilities of the university were located next to the administrative centre of the city close to the most prestigious district of Kyiv ‒ Lypky, and Pechersk. St. Vladimir University started to expand very quickly, that’s why a lot of new facilities were leased during the first period of its history. The University expanded not only into the city’s physical space but also become very influent in creating of Kyiv cultural space.
