Kata kunci: Novel Dongeng Nini Anteh, tayangan OVJ episode Nyai Anteh Penjaga Bulan, transformasi AbstractThe story of Nini Anteh is an oral folklore of Sundanese, which has undergone a transformation into transgenre and translingual forms. Kesuma’s novel of “Nini Anteh” and an Opera Van Java (OVJ) episode of “Nyai Anteh Penjaga Bulan” were the data of this study. The theory used in this research is the theory of transformation proposed by Riffaterre. Analysis of the data reveals expansion, conversion, modification, and similarities. Expansion in the OVJ did not appear in the slot, characters, and background for the story was made simpler than that in the novel. Expansion appeared in the variety of media used to invite laughter. Conversion in the OVJ was evident in simplified plot, character, and setting. In addition, the concept of beauty of Nyai Anteh in the novel was entirely changed for entertainment purposes. A gender bias background in the novel was turned into a neutral background in the OVJ. Although both works carried a Sundanese story, they show the notion of Indonesian by modifying the story through the use of characters and equipment in accordance with the modern age. In the novel efforts to build past linked to the life of the present can be seen as an attempt to prompt reflection, while modifications in the OVJ were to invite laughter. Both works share the same description of a woman who then decided to reside on the Moon because of love. What she did on the moon was weaving. These similarities indicate that there are things that would be passed on to subsequent generations, especially regarding the independence of women in producing textiles. Keywords: Novel of Dongeng Nini Anteh, OVJ episode of Nyai Anteh Penjaga Bulan, transformation

In the modern age of globalization and modernization, people have become selfish and self-centered.  Feeling of sympathy and kindness towards poor people have almost bolted from the hearts of those who have richly available resources.  They leave needy people running behind their luxurious chauffer-driven cars.  Poor and marginalized people keep shouting for help for their dear ones but upper class people trying to show as if they did not hear any long distant sound crept into their eardrums.  This trauma, agony, pain and sufferings is explored in the novel, The Foreigner.

It has not before been noticed that in describing works of art painted by his fictional anti-hero,Charles Strickland, in the novel The moon and sixpence, which is loosely based on the life of Paul Gauguin, Somerset Maugham drew on actual works by Gauguin in his verbal descriptions. Sometimes the references are to specific paintings, at others to phases in his work. For readers familiar with Gauguin’s artistic output, his writings on art and his biography, the effect of this insistent visual ‘quotation’ is to create a disturbing sense of aesthetic dissonance, in that it becomes difficult to accept the inarticulate, surly, impassioned but utterly grim and joyless figure of the fictional Charles Strickland as the source of these vivifying paintings, which possess their own real history and provenance. There is nothing in Strickland of Gauguin’s child-like zest for life, his exuberance, his fantasies, his extrovert willingness to explain his art to friends and the public through fascinating if deeply unreliable writings. The reader must either attempt to blot all knowledge of Gauguin and his art from consciousness, there by denying that Maugham is ‘quoting’ Gauguin’s oeuvre, or else submit to an intolerable level of fictional incredulity and disbelief.

The argument in this chapter and the next is that the aesthetic field during the modern period is defined by an elastic and differential regime of motion. These two chapters marshal support for this thesis by looking closely at major arts of the modern age: steel, photographic image, and the novel in Chapter 13, and meter, the action arts, and molecular arts in the next chapter. Although empirically quite different and distributed over hundreds of years, each follows a similar kinetic pattern or regime. This chapter looks at the way in which steel architecture, photography, and the novel move elastically by expanding and contracting and open series of frames (steel frames, photographic frames, and print frames).

Alice McDermott’s work is often cited as being an exemplar of the best that contemporary Catholic literature has to offer, and yet sustained close readings of her fiction are lacking. In this essay, I discuss how her work fits in the larger conversation about contemporary literature of belief, focusing on her novels Charming Billy and Someone. In Charming Billy, McDermott connects the act of storytelling to the practice of belief, emphasizing how what we choose to believe affects how we act. In Someone, she uses the form of the novel to depict the patterns of grace that are present in our life, whether we are consciously aware of them or not. Both novels allow for the possibility of the divine presence at work in the world, but her characters’ struggles over what to believe and how to act on these beliefs reflect the tensions of faith in the modern age.
