Objective. To evaluate changes in the quality of life of patients with chronic wounds. Methods. Quantitative research with a cross-sectional design performed with 100 patients with chronic wounds from a university hospital and a Basic Health Unit in southern Brazil. The mean values of the domains of the instruments Wound Quality of Life (Wound-QoL) and Freiburg Life Quality Assessment Wound were compared with sociodemographic variables of age, sex and education. Results. The average age of the participants was 60.98 years old; 41% had diabetic ulcers and 83% treated the wounds for more than 24 months. The total quality of life value was below the mean with 37.50/100 with (Wound-QoL) and 44.20/100 with (FLQA-Wk). The variables of gender, and educational level were not correlated with either of the two instruments used to assess the quality of life. The age variable was significantly correlated with the satisfaction item of the FLQA-Wk. Conclusion. The quality of life of patients with chronic wounds was considered poor. The age variable was correlated with the satisfaction domain, showing that the older the age, the lower the satisfaction. The use of instruments to evaluate the quality of life of patients with chronic wounds may help an effective treatment plan.

Background: Health literacy can be a stronger predictor of an individual’s health status than income, employment status, education level, and racial or ethnic group. The prevalence and impact of low health literacy in the rectal cancer patient population has received little attention. This study is a cross-sectional population survey to determine if there is a relationship between health literacy and quality of life in rectal cancer patients. Methods: All rectal cancer patients having a clinical encounter with the Colorectal Unit at Westmead Hospital will be invited to participate in the study. Two validated health literacy screens (REALM-SF and NVS) were administered along with the EORTC QLQ-C30 quality of life assessment. The association between health literacy and quality of life will be examined using Spearman regression. Results: 92 patients were recruited between March 2015 and July 2016. A significant proportion of our patients were found to have low health literacy (29.3 percent and 54.5 percent as measured by the REALM-SF and NVS, respectively). The mean QLQ-C30 summary score was 71.5 and the mean global health score was 69.4 (SD 23.3). There appeared to be no statistically significant correlation between health literacy and quality of life in our study. There was a moderately positive correlation between the NVS and REALM-SF (rho = 0.36, P <0.001).Conclusions: A significant proportion of our patients that have had rectal resections for cancer have low health literacy. We have not been able to demonstrate an obvious association between health literacy and quality of life in the present study.

Abstract Background and Aims Despite major advances in the provision of renal replacement therapy, children and adolescents on dialysis frequently have compromised daily life activities and a worse quality of life compared with healthy peers. While these aspects have been studied extensively in affluent countries, data from developing regions are scant. The aim of our study was assessing the psychosocial repercussions and the quality of life (QoL) of children with end stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis in a Moroccan tertiary care hospital and comparing them with healthy controls. Methods We performed a cross-sectional investigation, at Mohammed VI university hospital of Marrakesh, using parent/child reports of generic module for QoL assessment: PedsQLTM Inventory version 4 for both cases and controls. Disease-specific module: PedsQLTM ESRD version 3 was used for ESRD cases. Twenty-two children on maintenance hemodialysis and 50 controls were enrolled in our study. Results The mean age of the ESRD cases was 11.6 ± 4.7 years (range 4– 18 years) with female predominance (58%). Controls were age- and sex-matched. A statistically significant difference was observed between ESRD cases and controls regarding all aspects of QoL. The total QOL mean score was 51.2 ± 13.6 and 82.8 ± 11.2 among cases and controls, respectively. All individual QoL domains were significantly worse in ESRD cases. Conclusion Our findings showed that the quality of life of children undergoing hemodialysis may be dramatically affected especially in limited-resources countries. And this raises the need to introduce quality of life assessment as a part of pediatric ESRD management.

Introduction and objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of treatment on the quality of life (QoL) in postmenopausal women characterized by the reduced BMD.Material and methods: Postmenopausal women (n=102), mean age (65.09±5.6 years) were included in this study. The participants were divided into two groups, depending on the treatment or lack of treatment. For assessment of their QoL, QUALEFFO-41 scale and WHOQOL-100 scale were used. Results: Mean values of the QUALEFFO-41 scale of women who used alendronate were significantly lower than those found in subjects not treated with this drug in the following areas: pain (p=0.03), ADL (p=0.03), jobs around the house (p=0.01), mobility (p=0.01), health perception (p=0.03), emotional function (p= 0.007) and total QoL (p=0.005). The mean values of the WHOQOL-100 scale almost did not differ significantly between both groups of studied patients. An exception was the level of independence, with mean values of women not receiving bisphosphonates being significantly higher than those of patients using bisphosphonates therapy (p=0.04).Conclusions. Quality of life assessment of women with osteoporosis and osteopenia using a specific scale and general scale can be a valuable clue in the planning of treatment, nursing care and psychological care.

Background: Asthma is a common chronic illness worldwide. Identifying and treating impaired health-related quality of life is now recognized as an important component of asthma management. High prevalence of behavioral and emotional difficulties was noticed among children with asthma. Methods: Cross-sectional study that was conducted over 8 weeks involving 45 asthmatic children within the ages of 7-17 years old presented to Jordan University Hospital in Amman, Jordan. General demographic characteristics were collected, two questionnaires were used: asthma control test (ACT), and the pediatric asthma quality of life questionnaire (PAQLQ). We also used the feeling thermometer scale, and a pulmonary function test was done for patients. SAS Software version 9.4 USA and Pearsons coefficient were used to find associations. Results and Discussion: Among 45 patients, 53% of the sample had poor asthma control. The mean FEV1 on lung function testing was 80% (± 16.18) of predicted. The mean for asthma clinical scores (ACT) were 18.8 ± 4.53 (out of 25). FEV1 was significantly higher in children with good control compared to those with a low ACT score (P value <0.05). Mean total PAQLQ score was 5.3 ± 1.06 and it correlated significantly with ACT score (P value <0.001). Conclusion: This study highlights the association of poorly controlled asthma with a poor quality of life. It is recommended that the quality of life of children should be assessed and observed during clinic visits, for a better comprehensive approach and effective improvement of outcome.

In recent years, the global burden of diabetes distress has increased significantly worldwide, imposing mental health issues on patients and the healthcare system. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of diabetes distress and determine its psychosocial predictors among Saudi adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted at Diabetes Clinics, Tertiary Care Academic Medical Center, King Saud University Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The survey questionnaire was distributed to 423 participants. The sample size was 384, where the prevalence of diabetes distress was 48.5%. Based on 5% precision and a confidence interval of 95%, the response rate was 78.25% (334 respondents), among which 61.4% of respondents were females, the remaining 38.6% were males, and the mean age was 56.39 years. The mean scores for the Saudi Arabian Diabetes Distress Scale-17 (SADDS-17) subdomains including emotional burden, physician-related distress, regimen-related distress, and interpersonal distress were 2.63 ± 1.29, 2.31 ± 1.44, 2.48 ± 1.16, and 2.23 ± 1.24, respectively. Based on the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument, Short Version (WHOQOL-BREF) transformed scores, the quality of life was recorded as 62.7%. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) score (r = 0.287, p < 0.01) and the total SADDS-17 scores. The Patient Health Questionaire (PHQ) 15 scores showed significant positive correlations with the total SADDS-17 scores (r = 0.288, p < 0.01) and each of the four subdomains. Our present study revealed that diabetes distress prevalence is alarmingly high among patients in Saudi Arabia, Riyadh. Our findings provide evidence that physical symptoms, quality of life, depression, and anxiety are the notable predictors of diabetes distress.

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the common chronic disease, which lead to great disability and chronic pain, and has a main adverse economic and social effect upon patients. The reason for the addition of quality of life as a pointer for health outcome result is attributed to the affectability of this measure for the evaluation of patient's health status after taken treatment and its health outcome. The purpose of the current study was to assess quality of life among a sample of Iraqi patients with rheumatoid arthritis and to determine the possible association between health’s related quality of life and some patient-certain factors. This study is a cross-sectional study carried out on 250 already diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis patients who attended Baghdad Teaching Hospital/Medical City/Rheumatology department. The mean age of the patients was (50.8 ± 13.1 years). The Arabic version of the (WHOQOL-BREF) Questionnaire was used to measure Quality of life. The results of the current study showed that rheumatoid arthritis has a significant effect on the quality of life of patients. The mean of the total quality of life score was 46.9 ± 9.7. Older age was associated with the reduced psychological and environmental score. Female patients had high physical and psychological score compared to male patients. Higher education levels worked patients directly predict the elevated quality of life score. High disease activity associated with low quality of life score. Future studies should investigate how interventional approaches addressing these predictors may lead to improve quality of life among rheumatoid arthritis patients and their impression on disease control.

AbstractCancer-related malnutrition has a high prevalence, reduces survival and increases side effects. The aim of this study was to assess oncology outpatients and risk of malnutrition. Reported symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in patients found to be at risk of malnutrition or malnourished were compared to patients without malnutrition. Using a standardized questionnaire, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire for Quality of Life and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), patients in an outpatient cancer clinic undergoing chemotherapy treatment at a German University Hospital were assessed for nutrition, risk of malnutrition and quality of life. Based on the MNA, 39 (45.9%) patients were categorized as malnourished or at risk for malnutrition. Loss of appetite (n = 37.6%, p < 0.001) and altered taste sensation (n = 30,3%, p < 0.001) were the symptoms most frequently associated with reduced food intake. Patients with risk of malnutrition scored lower on the global health status (n = 48.15%, p = 0.001). Side effects of cancer treatments lead to a higher risk of malnutrition and as a consequence lower QoL. These side effects should be addressed more efficiently in cancer care.
