Malathion is an insecticide which is commonly used for the agricultural and non-agricultural purposes in India. Malathion is found effective for controlling mosquitoes, flies, household insects, animal parasites (ectoparasites) and head & body lice. The effect of insecticide Malathion is found to be highly toxiceven to the non-targeted aquatic organisms including fish. The aim of the study, was to determine the effect of insecticide malathion on some biochemical characteristics (protein, carbohydrate and cholesterol in gill, liver, muscle and kidney) of the fish, Labeo rohita. Toxicity evaluation tests were conducted to determine LC50 values. The 1/10th of 96 hrs, LC50 value was selected as sublethal concentrations (0.5 ppm). All biochemical's parameters were found to be decreased in all tissues on comparison with control. The results indicated the toxic nature of the insecticide malathion.

Cadmium is a well known heavy metal toxicant which can interfere with metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids by inhibiting the enzymes involved in the processes. In the present investigation, the effect of cadmium was evaluated on these biochemical constituents in two fresh water fish fry Labeo rohita and Cyprinus carpio. Fish fry of Labeo rohita and Cyprinus carpio were exposed to their respective sub-lethal concentrations (1/5th of LC50), 0.1998 ppm and 4.938 ppm of cadmium for a period of 20days. Total carbohydrates, proteins and lipids were estimated by standard biochemical procedures in control and exposed fish fry. Results showed significant fall in all the biochemical constituents and energy levels of exposed fish fry, indicating that the organism is under toxicant stress.

Oxytetracycline (OTC) has been commonly used as an effective antibiotic against various fish bacterial diseases, including vibriosis. In this study, the absorption-enhancing effect of citric acid on oral OTC pharmacokinetics and treatment of artificial Vibrio anguillarum infection was evaluated in juvenile yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata followed by serum OTC concentration analysis. When 25 mg kg-1 body weight (BW) OTC was administered in combination with 1250 mg kg-1 BW citric acid, the serum OTC concentration reached almost the same concentration as that of the group treated with 50 mg kg-1 BW OTC. This coadministration successfully suppressed mortality due to vibriosis similar to the group treated with 50 mg kg-1 BW OTC. Conversely, poor efficacy was observed when only 25 mg kg-1 BW OTC was administered. These results suggest that coadministration of citric acid can be beneficial in reducing the dose of OTC needed for effective treatment, and thus contributes to the goal of reduced use of this antibiotic in aquaculture.
