This chapter discusses the impact of Constantinos Karamanlis on Greek politics. Karamanlis, leader of the Greek Right, served as prime minister for fourteen years (1955–63 and 1974–80), and as president of the republic for ten (1980–5 and 1990–5). A major (and, at times, dominant) figure from the mid-1950s until the mid-1990s, he was pivotal in the attainment of economic development and the founding of an established democracy in 1974–75, as well as Greece’s association with the EEC (1961) and its eventual succession (1979–81). The chapter discusses his long political career, his popular support base and the evolution of the Greek Right from the early 1950s until the late 1970s. It also evaluates Karamanlis’ political methodology: it disputes the assumptions of older bibliography which focused on his personal impact only, and puts forward the more contemporary thesis that Karamanlis was the leader of a team that expressed a wider ideological trend and the need to adjust to Western governance in the post-war era. Last but not least, Karamanlis’ legacies are discussed, mostly on the European identity of the country; arguably, this legacy allowed the Greek Right to survive the grave economic and social crisis of the 2010s.

The paper investigates the impact of different factors on the establishment and development of social enterprises (SPs). The aim of this paper is to identify the key stimulants and restrictions of development of SPs in the Republic of Serbia, and to propose measures, the application of which can increase their long-term sustainability. The paper is based on exploratory research using data covering 27 interviews with founders of social enterprises in the Republic of Serbia. By applying the methods of regression analysis, it was found that favorable financial resources (especially grants) are the key stimulants for the establishment of social enterprises, while the enthusiasm of managers of social enterprises has the greatest impact on their development. It was found also that legal regulations and the macroeconomic environment, as well as difficulties in accessing the market, are serious restrictions on the establishment of social enterprises, while lack of knowledge in the field of marketing and management limit the development of social enterprises in the Republic of Serbia.

Small and private entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly important in the world economy. International experience shows that the impact of small and private entrepreneurship on economic growth through the creation of new jobs is very important. The role of these enterprises is growing, especially as economic development progresses towards services and information technology. Small and private enterprises are becoming economic entities where new techniques and technologies are rapidly introduced, advanced management methods are rapidly applied and effective in the short term. Indeed, the role of employment in economic growth through the development of small and private entrepreneurship is immeasurable. In particular, entrepreneurship plays an important role not only in the socio-economic life of the republic, but also in the regions. Entrepreneurship is a source of endless opportunities for the development of market relations, ensuring the stability of the economy, attracting investment from domestic and foreign sources, as well as meeting the growing employment needs of the population. Indeed, the origin of small and private enterprises is a reflection of a complex set of needs of different composition, primarily due to the need to increase the number of enterprises that can influence and withstand market competition in the country's economy; second, it is characterized by the fact that small and private businesses are the cheapest, preferred, and preferred method of recruiting the population. The article summarizes the laws of emergence and formation of entrepreneurship. In particular, it was found that the emergence of criteria based on the number of employees as well as production indicators has made small and private entrepreneurship an important phenomenon of economic development. Accordingly, it is proposed to improve the characteristics of small and private entrepreneurship using both criteria, and a new, improved definition of the concept of "entrepreneurship" and "entrepreneur" applied to employment. The article consists of an introduction, goals and objectives, methods, results and comments, and a conclusion.

Education is the most fundamental right in the current situation, and it is an essential element of economic growth. No country can achieve economic development and goals without investing in education. Pakistan’s economic development is possible when education is equal for both men and women, but the government did not give importance to the sector as it deserved. This study investigated the determinants of female higher education in Pakistan and the impact of women's education on the economic growth of Pakistan. This study utilized time-series data from 1991 to 2019. The autoregressive distribution lag (ARDL) model is applied to estimate the impact. The result shows that in Pakistan, education expenditure has no positive effect on female education. In contrast, a positive relationship between female higher education and GDP growth exists, but this relation is not strong in the short run and long run.

Pakistan’s inclusion in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is optimistically seen as a turning point in the changing geopolitical landscape of the Eurasian belt, as well as bringing new opportunities for Pakistan. This paper explores the prospects of economic development and political cooperation that Pakistan’s membership of SCO offers. The practice of multilateral diplomacy has helped in mitigating regional tensions and augmenting collaboration in the world history, therefore, the paper explores the possibilities of SCO as the best multilateral forum for Pakistan. Although SCO is perceived as an anti-Western alliance, its extended membership is building on the allies (old and new) of the US, particularly inclusion of India and Pakistan is challenging the stance. Moreover, SCO has shunned the notion of anti-Western outlook and the widespread perception to balance out the supremacy of US at the regional, as well as global level. Even so, SCO is catering all prerequisites of the collaboration of regional actors in Central and South Asia and furthering cooperation in the economic field. In this setting, the paper is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the analytical framework of new regionalism in South and Central Asia. The second part examines core factors that have led to the extension of the SCO. Finally, the paper evaluates the impact of the extension of the SCO on Pakistan. The study concludes that notwithstanding challenges, the SCO provides opportunities for economic development and political cooperation between states.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the dynamics of investments in fixed assets, the level of the debt burden of the regions and the debt instruments used by them from the standpoint of identifying the possibilities of the territories for the financial and investment support of their socio-economic development. On the example of the regions of the Volga Federal District (VFD), the existing financial and investment practice of ensuring the socio-economic development of territories in the investment sphere and in the field of debt policy is considered. The analysis made it possible to establish, firstly, the insufficiency of the existing level of investment in fixed assets of the studied regions in terms of the parameters of economic security to ensure sustainable socio-economic development of the territories, and secondly, the relatively high differentiation of the Volga Federal District regions, both in terms of the level of debt burden and by the structure of public debt. On the example of the Republic of Bashkortostan (RB), proposals are made to increase the level of financial and investment support for the socio-economic development of territories based on the use of financial resources of the household sector. The proposals were developed taking into account both the experience of the best practice of other constituent entities of the Russian Federation (RF) in this area (Tomsk Oblast, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, etc.), and trends in domestic debt policy revealed on the basis of analysis of regulatory legal acts on the budget of the Republic of Belarus republics in the form of a shift in priorities in the area of planned borrowing on public debt towards more active use of government bonds. Taking into account the high debt stability of the Republic of Belarus (according to the criteria set forth in the articles of the Budget Code of the Russian Federation) and the rather strong positions of the republic in investment ratings, it is proposed to expand the practice of using the financial resources of the population through the bond market as a promising tool for increasing the financial security of the republic by attracting internal reserves. In order to minimize investment risk for non-professional investors, it was recommended that the Government of the Republic of Belarus issue sub-federal (government) bonds for the population. The advantages of issuing this type of securities from the point of view of obtaining benefits and realizing financial interests of both the state authorities of the Republic of Belarus and the population are described.
