It is significant to prepare pre-service teachers do to teaching practicum as they will teach English at secondary schools. One of the preparations is peer teaching during teacher education program. This study is intended to explore students’ experiences during the peer teaching in a cooperative learning style. One class of 26 students of English Education Department of a state university in East Borneo, Indonesia, participated in this study. They were randomly assigned in the group of four and eight, and each group member should practice peer teaching in their own group. Using a case study design, the findings have shown the potency of cooperative learning. The students had positive experiences the cooperative style of four-group, eight-group, and the whole class. The four- and eight- group formats in the peer teaching provide students more opportunities to have better teaching preparation, mastery of the teaching materials, more interaction with peers, to develop confidence, and to learn from others. They encountered some difficulties such as attracting peers’ attention, time for peer teaching, less serious peers, and more preparation. The findings suggest that it would be more valuable for students to be in more group formats with more time that would give students more confident when they teach for the whole class. Implication and suggestion are further discussed.

Practicing speaking is very important for students to exchange ideas with others. Although having learned English for the years, many EFL students face problems in delivering the ideas orally. To overcome this kind of problem, an ex post facto research was conducted by observing the students’ scores in two subjects grammar and speaking. The students were in the first semester of the English education major. The research is to find out the material used in teaching grammar to develop speaking learning. To satisfy the aim of this study, the mixed-method was implemented. The data was analyzed qualitatively and confirmed quantitatively by the applying t-test.  From the analysis could be drawn that Using translation-method, podcast, noticing, and conversation in applying the communicative-grammar method enhances the students’ competence in speaking. It is very helpful for the teachers and students to implement it in learning grammar and speaking. It also provides the idea to other researchers to dig some deeper innovation in the same field.

The linguistic relativity of Sapir-Whorf hypothesis posits how language influences a person’s view of the world. This is where this study is entrenched and attempted to investigate the extent of influence of English language on the vocabulary of the selected English Education major students from a state university in Mindanao, Philippines. Employing survey for their profile, picture-lexicalization, and focus group discussion, data disclosed that roughly 70% perceived themselves to be very proficient in their native language; proficient in Filipino, which is the country's official national language and somewhat proficient in English language. Despite these perceptions of their proficiency in the languages they speak, picture-lexicalization method yielded practically 80% of the respondents use the English language compared to their native and Filipino languages. The participants disclosed that familiarity with the language played a major part in their picture-lexicalization. Finally, the FGD further revealed the respondents’ view that their native language is a reflection of their identity. The Filipino language makes them “real” Filipino or their national identity, while English language is a language of prestige and education that they can use to communicate with other nationalities.
