In sports, a calculation of efficiency is considered to be one of the most challenging tasks. In this paper, DEA is used to evaluate an efficiency of the NBA players, based on multiple inputs and multiple outputs. The efficiency is evaluated for 26 NBA players at the guard position based on existing data. However, if we want to generate the efficiency for a new player, we would have to re-conduct the DEA analysis. Therefore, to predict the efficiency of a new player, machine learning algorithms are applied. The DEA results are incorporated as an input for the learning algorithms, defining thereby an efficiency frontier function form with high reliability. In this paper, linear regression, neural network, and support vector machines are used to predict an efficiency frontier. The results have shown that neural networks can predict the efficiency with an error less than 1%, and the linear regression with an error less than 2%.

Machine Learning is part of Artificial Intelligence that has the ability to make future forecastings based on the previous experience. Methods has been proposed to construct models including machine learning algorithms such as Neural Networks (NN), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Deep Learning. This paper presents a comparative performance of Machine Learning algorithms for cryptocurrency forecasting. Specifically, this paper concentrates on forecasting of time series data. SVM has several advantages over the other models in forecasting, and previous research revealed that SVM provides a result that is almost or close to actual result yet also improve the accuracy of the result itself. However, recent research has showed that due to small range of samples and data manipulation by inadequate evidence and professional analyzers, overall status and accuracy rate of the forecasting needs to be improved in further studies. Thus, advanced research on the accuracy rate of the forecasted price has to be done.

Educational Data Mining (EDM) is a rich research field in computer science. Tools and techniques in EDM are useful to predict student performance which gives practitioners useful insights to develop appropriate intervention strategies to improve pass rates and increase retention. The performance of the state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers is very much dependent on the task at hand. Investigating support vector machines has been used extensively in classification problems; however, the extant of literature shows a gap in the application of linear support vector machines as a predictor of student performance. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of linear support vector machines with the performance of the state-of-the-art classical machine learning algorithms in order to determine the algorithm that would improve prediction of student performance. In this quantitative study, an experimental research design was used. Experiments were set up using feature selection on a publicly available dataset of 1000 alpha-numeric student records. Linear support vector machines benchmarked with ten categorical machine learning algorithms showed superior performance in predicting student performance. The results of this research showed that features like race, gender, and lunch influence performance in mathematics whilst access to lunch was the primary factor which influences reading and writing performance.

Telecommunication has registered strong and rapid growth in the past decade. Accordingly, the monitoring of computers and networks is too complicated for network administrators. Hence, network security represents one of the biggest serious challenges that can be faced by network security communities. Taking into consideration the fact that e-banking, e-commerce, and business data will be shared on the computer network, these data may face a threat from intrusion. The purpose of this research is to propose a methodology that will lead to a high level and sustainable protection against cyberattacks. In particular, an adaptive anomaly detection framework model was developed using deep and machine learning algorithms to manage automatically-configured application-level firewalls. The standard network datasets were used to evaluate the proposed model which is designed for improving the cybersecurity system. The deep learning based on Long-Short Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network (LSTM-RNN) and machine learning algorithms namely Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) algorithms were implemented to classify the Denial-of-Service attack (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. The information gain method was applied to select the relevant features from the network dataset. These network features were significant to improve the classification algorithm. The system was used to classify DoS and DDoS attacks in four stand datasets namely KDD cup 199, NSL-KDD, ISCX, and ICI-ID2017. The empirical results indicate that the deep learning based on the LSTM-RNN algorithm has obtained the highest accuracy. The proposed system based on the LSTM-RNN algorithm produced the highest testing accuracy rate of 99.51% and 99.91% with respect to KDD Cup’99, NSL-KDD, ISCX, and ICI-Id2017 datasets, respectively. A comparative result analysis between the machine learning algorithms, namely SVM and KNN, and the deep learning algorithms based on the LSTM-RNN model is presented. Finally, it is concluded that the LSTM-RNN model is efficient and effective to improve the cybersecurity system for detecting anomaly-based cybersecurity.

Local descriptor matching is the most overlooked stage of the three stages of the local descriptor process, and this paper proposes a new method for matching local descriptors based on support vector machines. Results from experiments show that the developed method is more robust for matching local descriptors for all image transformations considered. The method is able to be integrated with different local descriptor methods, and with different machine learning algorithms and this shows that the approach is sufficiently robust and versatile.

Scientific Knowledge and Electronic devices are growing day by day. In this aspect, many expert systems are involved in the healthcare industry using machine learning algorithms. Deep neural networks beat the machine learning techniques and often take raw data i.e., unrefined data to calculate the target output. Deep learning or feature learning is used to focus on features which is very important and gives a complete understanding of the model generated. Existing methodology used data mining technique like rule based classification algorithm and machine learning algorithm like hybrid logistic regression algorithm to preprocess data and extract meaningful insights of data. This is, however a supervised data. The proposed work is based on unsupervised data that is there is no labelled data and deep neural techniques is deployed to get the target output. Machine learning algorithms are compared with proposed deep learning techniques using TensorFlow and Keras in the aspect of accuracy. Deep learning methodology outfits the existing rule based classification and hybrid logistic regression algorithm in terms of accuracy. The designed methodology is tested on the public MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, classifying four kinds of abnormal beats. The proposed approach based on deep learning technique offered a better performance, improving the results when compared to machine learning approaches of the state-of-the-art

An effective process monitoring strategy is a requirement for meeting the challenges posed by increasingly complex products and manufacturing processes. To address these needs, this study investigates a comprehensive scheme based on classical machine learning methods, deep learning algorithms, and feature extraction and selection techniques. In a first step, a novel deep learning architecture based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) and gated recurrent units (GRU) is introduced to predict the local weld quality based on mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and near-infrared (NIR) image data. The developed technology is used to discover critical welding defects including lack of fusion (false friends), sagging and lack of penetration, and geometric deviations of the weld seam. Additional work is conducted to investigate the significance of various geometrical, statistical, and spatio-temporal features extracted from the keyhole and weld pool regions. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed deep learning architecture is compared to that of classical supervised machine learning algorithms, such as multi-layer perceptron (MLP), logistic regression (LogReg), support vector machines (SVM), decision trees (DT), random forest (RF) and k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN). Optimal hyperparameters for each algorithm are determined by an extensive grid search. Ultimately, the three best classification models are combined into an ensemble classifier that yields the highest detection rates and achieves the most robust estimation of welding defects among all classifiers studied, which is validated on previously unknown welding trials.

Abstract. Individual Tree Crown (ITC) delineation from aerial imageries plays an important role in forestry management and precision farming. Several conventional as well as machine learning and deep learning algorithms have been recently used in ITC detection purpose. In this paper, we present Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as the deep learning and machine learning algorithms along with conventional methods of classification such as Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA) and Nearest Neighborhood (NN) classification for banana tree delineation. The comparison was done based by considering two cases; Firstly, every single classifier was compared by feeding the image with height information to see the effect of height in banana tree delineation. Secondly, individual classifiers were compared quantitatively and qualitatively based on five metrices i.e., Overall Accuracy, Recall, Precision, F-Score, and Intersection Over Union (IoU) and best classifier was determined. The result shows that there are no significant differences in the metrices when height information was fed as there were banana tree of almost similar height in the farm. The result as discussed in quantitative and qualitative analysis showed that the CNN algorithm out performed SVM, OBIA and NN techniques for crown delineation in term of performance measures.
