Two extrudates made of AlSi11 alloy have been produced in the co-extrusion process: solid billet and machining chips from the rolling process. The microstructure was observed, mechanical properties were determined on the basis of the 1-axial stretch test, and the fatigue tests were performed to determine the fatigue resistance of the AlSi11 alloy.

Magnesium and magnesium alloys offer high potential as lightweight materials. Current works are mainly focused on the metal forming technologies and material development for sheet and strips to provide magnesium flat products for industrial applications. However, the technology for the production of magnesium long products for fasteners or other connecting elements is exclusive the extrusion process. A cost-efficient alternative can be the caliber rolling technology for magnesium rods and wire with regard to refined microstructure and specific required properties. But this whole process is rarely applied up to now and all material-specific as well as deformation relevant basics must be developed and additionally validated under industrial conditions. This paper gives the overview for a magnesium-specific wire rolling technology under consideration of chemical composition (AZ31, AZ61, AZ80) and their influence to final mechanical properties in correlation with the microstructure evolution along the whole process line. Therefore, the process-and material-dependent microstructural evolution during rolling process was investigated. The structural constitution is detailed by the grain size and the precipitation conditions. For the determination of the mechanical properties hardness measurement as well as tensile testing was carried out. To preliminary design and determine the material flow, the temperature distribution, and the logarithmic strain, a commercial numerical simulation tool was applied on base of the implemented material-specific deformation and recrystallization behavior. Hence, it was possible to design a magnesium specific caliber sequence for the production of fine-grained magnesium wires with Ø 8 mm and excellent mechanical properties.

Zr-2.5Cu and Zr-10Cu powder mixtures were consolidated in the extrusion process and using the spark plasma sintering technique. In these studies, material tests were carried out in the fields of phase composition, microstructure, hardness and tensile strength for Zr-Cu materials at room temperature (RT) and 400 °C. Fractography analysis of materials at room temperature and 400 °C was carried out. The research took into account the anisotropy of the materials obtained in the extrusion process. For the nonequilibrium SPS process, ZrCu2 and Cu10Zr7 intermetallic compounds formed in the material at sintering temperature. Extruded materials were composed mainly of α-Zr and ZrCu2. The presence of intermetallic compounds affected the reduction in the strength properties of the tested materials. The highest strength value of 205 MPa was obtained for the extruded Zr-2.5Cu, for which the samples were cut in the direction of extrusion. For materials with 10 wt.% copper, more participation of the intermetallic phase was formed, which lowered the mechanical properties of the obtained materials. In addition to brittle intermetallic phases, the materials were characterized by residual porosity, which also reduced the strength properties.

In this work, the effect of steel grade on the fatigue resistance of deep-rolled crankshafts is analysed. In the first part of this paper, the mechanisms leading to the increase of the fatigue resistance brought by the deep rolling treatment, is presented. This reinforcement is mainly linked to crack arrest due both to a decrease of the in-depth stress concentration factor and to remaining compressive residual stresses induced by the deep rolling. In a second part, an analytical model of residual stresses generation by deep-rolling and fatigue is presented. In this model the low cyclic fatigue behaviour of the steel is taken into account, and the residual stress stability with bending fatigue cycling can be predicted. After a presentation of the experimental validation on two different microstructures (baintic and ferrito- perlitic), this model is used for analysing the main parameters of the deep-rolling process and fatigue resistance.

The aim of this work is to study the effects of hydrogen absorption on mechanical properties of pipe API 5L X70 steel. This study is conducted in special soil solution NS4 with pH 6.7 It show that the tensile properties like yield stress, ultimate strength and elongation at failure reduced under hydrogen embrittlement. Several fatigue tests (three (03) points bending tests) on roman tile specimens with notch are performed. Fatigue initiation is detected by acoustic emission. A comparison between specimens electrolytically charged with hydrogen and specimens without hydrogen absorption is made and it has been noted that fatigue initiation time is reduced when hydrogen embrittlement occurs. The field of elastoplastic stresses near the notch is computed by the finite-element method with the Abaqus software package. Effective distance and stress are calculated with the volumetric approach and the Notch intensity Factor of the roman tile specimen is determined for each loading value used in our tests.

The paper describes the results of a research programme, carried out at the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the University of Pisa, for the assessment of the influence of plasma cutting on the physical and mechanical properties of Fe510 D1, a low carbon steel widely used in carpentry. The activity started by observing that several industries rework plasma cut edges, particularly in the case of fatigue structures, in spite of the good quality of the plasma cut edges in a fully automatic process. Obviously, reworking is very expensive and time-consuming. Comparative fatigue tests demonstrated that the fatigue resistance of plasma cut specimens in Fe510 steel was fully comparable to that of milled specimens, as the consequence of the beneficial residual stresses which formed in the plasma cut edges. The application of vanadium-nitrogen alloy to develop a certain low carbon high strength H-beam steel was determined through the combination of theoretical study, product requirements and existing practical conditions. The specific rolling process was further defined through laboratory experiments. The developed low carbon high strength H-beam steel was trial produced and its properties were also analyzed. The results showed that the newly developed low carbon high strength H-beam steel had excellent mechanical properties and good weldability.

The paper presents the results of the experimental study of the three-layer Al-Mg-Al sheets rolling process by the ARB method. The tests carried out were limited to single-pass symmetric and asymmetric rolling processes. An Al-Mg-Al package with an initial thickness of 4 mm (1-2-1 mm) was subjected to the process of rolling with a relative reduction of 50%. To activate the shear band in the strip being deformed, an asymmetry factor of av=2 was applied. From the test results, an increase in the tensile strength of the multi-layer Al-Mg-Al sheets obtained from the asymmetric process was observed. Microhardness tests did not show any significant differences in aluminium layer between respective layers of sheets obtained from the symmetric and the asymmetric process. By contrast, for the magnesium layer, an increase in microhardness from 72 HV to 79 HV could be observed for the asymmetric rolling. The analysis of the produced Al-Mg-Al sheets shows that the good bond between individual layers and grain refinement in the magnesium layer contributed to the obtaining of higher mechanical properties in the multi-layer sheets produced in the asymmetric process compared to the sheets obtained from the symmetric process.
