The author compares morphologically the brains of the brothers Vladimir and Nikolai Bekhterev, with 120 morphological features used for comparison. 47.5% of the features were found to be similar in the brothers, which suggests familial similarity of the brain, homolateral in 32.5/o and contralateral in 15% of the similar features.

Vulcanonemertes rangitotoensis gen. et sp. nov. (Hoplonemertea: Monostilifera) is described and illustrated. Major morphological features of the new taxon include an anteriorly divided body wall longitudinal musculature, no pre-cerebral septum, cephalic glands which reach far back behind the brain, and accessory lateral nerves which extend the full length of the body.

Hemorrhagic stroke is less common than ischemic stroke and is heavier and in most cases has an adverse outcome in the form of death of a patient or permanent disability.Recently, there has been a tendency to increase the frequency of GI, which is increasingly found at a younger age. GI is based on a rupture of blood vessels, the development of hemorrhage and as a consequence - the formation of cerebral edema, ischemia of brain tissue, violation of the integrity of GBS, imbalance of the neuroimmune system, as well as violation of the function of other systems and organs.

The prefrontal cortex is the largest lobe of the brain and is consequently involved in stroke. There is no comprehensive practical pharmacological strategy for ameliorating prefrontal cortex injury induced by cerebral ischemia. Therefore, we studied the neuroprotective properties of verapamil (Ver) on mitochondrial dysfunction and morphological features of apoptosis in transient global ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). Ninety-six Wistar rats were allocated into four groups: control, I/R, I/R+Ver (10 mg/kg twice 1 hour prior to ischemia and 1 hour after reperfusion phase), and I/R+NaCl (vehicle). Animals were sacrificed, and mitochondrial dysfunction parameters (i.e., mitochondrial swelling, mitochondrial membrane potential, ATP concentration, ROS production, and cytochrome c release), antioxidant defense (i.e., superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and caspase-3 activation), and morphological features of apoptosis were determined. The results showed that mitochondrial damage, impairment of antioxidant defense system, and apoptosis were significantly more prevalent in the I/R group in comparison with the other groups. Ver decreased mitochondrial damage by reducing oxidative stress, augmented the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the brain, and decreased apoptosis in the I/R neurons. The current study confirmed the role of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in I/R progression and indicated the possible antioxidative mechanism of the neuroprotective activities of Ver.

AbstractIn retinas of teleost fish, neuropeptides typically have subtle, modulatory actions. The peptide effects typically have long latencies and durations, and, in some instances, they are known to be mediated by second messengers. Peptidergic neurons in teleost retinas have certain morphological features in common that are consistent with their function. Most peptidergic neurons are stratified amacrine cells with long, varicose processes; the processes of peptidergic centrifugal axons are also narrowly stratified and ramify extensively in the retina. The peptidergic amacrine cells are relatively infrequent, and, likewise, the centrifugal axons originate from a small number of perikarya in the brain. Cells that are so sparsely distributed and whose processes overlap so extensively are better-suited for modulation than for conveying detailed representations of visual space.

AbstractGalactosomum lacteum (Jägerskiöld, 1896) Looss, 1899 metacercariae, encysted on the optic nerve, on the brain and/or on the muscle and the connective of the pharynx and oesophagus, were found in Spicara maena L., S. flexuosa Rafinesque, 1810, S. smaris L. (Centracanthidae), Gobius cruentatus Gmelin, 1789 (Gobiidae), Symphodus tinca L., S. mediterraneus L. (Labridae), Serranus cabrilla L. (Serranidae), Diplodus sargus L. and D. annularis L. (Sparidae) caught in the Gulf of Cagliari (southern Sardinia, Italy). Excysted specimens were identified by some distinctive morphological features: more or less expanded forebody, depending on whether the specimens were living or fixed; tubular excretory bladder extending to the posterior border of the ovary; two-chambered seminal vesicle; asymmetrical and parenchymatous ventral sucker with lines of spines within its cavity; and unarmed gonotyle. Comparison has been made with the congeneric species metacercaria, G. timondavidi Pearson & Prévot, 1971, also registered in the Mediterranean Sea.
