Abstract Objectives To evaluate the association of VDR polymorphisms (FokI, TaqI and ApaI) with vitamin D levels and glycemic status in type 2 diabetes patients from Southern India. Methods In this observational study, genotype frequencies and vitamin D levels of 200 cases (type 2 diabetes patients) were compared with 300 controls (unrelated anonymised stored samples of healthy volunteers) from south India. Serum 25 (OH) D levels were measured by immunoassay technique, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was measured using HPLC and genotyping of VDR polymorphisms were carried out using Real time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT PCR). Results About 69.2% of type 2 diabetes patients were found to have vitamin D deficiency. FokI polymorphism showed variations in serum 25 (OH) D levels, with AA and AG genotypes having significantly lower serum 25 (OH) D levels as compared to GG [13.24 (8.4) ng/ml, 15.02 (7.07) ng/ml and 20.67 (13.64) ng/ml respectively]. There was no difference in HbA1c levels with respect to the vitamin D levels and VDR polymorphisms. Conclusions AA and AG genotypes of FokI polymorphisms are associated with low serum 25 (OH) D levels. However there was no association between VDR polymorphisms and glycemic status in south Indian type 2 diabetes patients.

The study was aimed to assess the macronutrient intake pattern and its association to glycemic status and drug intake pattern of type 2 diabetes patients. Forty five subjects (25 males and 20 females) aged between 30 and 60 years, diagnosed with diabetes for less than 3 years were enrolled into the study. Based on Oral Anti-Diabetic drugs (OAD) treatment, they were grouped as those on mono-therapy (GpI, n=21) and dual therapy (GpII, n=25). Information about drugs profile, macronutrient intake (3 days diet recall reported as % equivalent of energy) and serum glucose profile were obtained at baseline and a 6th month follow up. Mean CHO, protein and fat intakes were 65.4±4.84, 12.6±1.26 and 22.0±4.7 % of total energy at baseline and remained essentially similar at 6<sup>th</sup> month. Patients who had controlled glycemic status (HbA<sub>1C </sub>≤ 7 %) consumed 63.4±2.70 % CHO which was significantly (P&lt;0.05) lower than those with not<strong>-</strong>controlled glycemic status (HbA<sub>1C </sub>&gt;7 %) during both the assessment periods. Also, mean protein intake was higher and fat intake was lower among patients with good glycemic control. Significantly a higher proportion of (P&lt;0.05) patients consuming CHO &gt; 65 % were on dual therapy. A diet with lower carbohydrates and fat but high protein exerted good glycemic control. Number of OADs and their dosages were significantly associated to CHO intakes. Since Indian diets are predominantly carbohydrate rich, it calls for a careful management of diet among Type 2 diabetes patients

Background: In recent times much is talked about of serum ferritin, an acute phase reactant a marker of iron stores in the body and its association with diabetes mellitus. Studies implicate that increased body iron stores and subclinical hemochromatosis has been associated with the development of glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes and its micro as well as macrovascular complications. Material & Methods: This study was carried out to examine and to observe for any relationship between serum ferritin with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our study populations were included 163. Among them 81 type 2 diabetes patients as a case (M=49,F=32, mean 44.68 age in years)and 82 normal healthy individual as a control ( M=35, F=47 , mean 34.71 in years). Results: Majority were healthy outpatients who had come for regular checkup and were matched with controls. Serum ferritin and FBS were estimated and other investigations. Results showed that although Serum ferritin was in the normal range value it was increased in type 2 diabetes patients than in controls and was statistically significant, we did get a positive correlation with duration of diabetes. It can be concluded that there were positive associations between serum ferritin and FBG, age, sex among study groups. Conclusion: In conclusion our study shows that there is significant correlation between increased serum ferritin in diabetes compared to individuals with normal blood sugars in this part and hyper ferritinemia may be one of the causes for development of insulin resistance before overt diabetes.
