Virtual Classroom Design for the New Profile of Distance Learning StudentAbstractThe proposed research analyzes how the design showing may reflect in the performance of distance learning student and how those students perceive the content arrangement in the virtual classrooms. During this research education dropout was highlighted, demanding special attention. Thus, the objective of the study was to establish a direct relationship between the design of the classroom and the satisfactory level of acceptability/interest/motivation with the virtual learning environment. Obviously, these variables are directly linked to causes of evasion. This way, it was verified that the content arrangement and the way the virtual classrooms are disposed influence the interest for the subjects and consequently reflects in the dropout statistics. As methodological assumption for this research it was carried out a bibliographic review and an electronic survey with the involved parts: students, professors, coordinators, and tutors in the Federal institute of education, science and technology of Paraiba state. Thus, the research showed the existence of several factors to determine the stay or dropout of a student in a distance learning course. However, the course organization and the virtual classroom arrangement are essential for the student success. Keywords: design and dropout, new distance learning student, virtual classroom

Advances in information technology stimulate development of applications to enhance Internet-based higher education. Reviewing a virtual classroom model, we studied the possibilities and problems of introducing model-based distance learning in everyday higher education. We survey important issues and methodological elements of virtual classrooms in relation to demands of teaching procedures, programs, and materials. Our main objective is to determine specific circumstances enabling objects to be defined for this special modeling. We begin by introducing application of features in models for virtual teaching, then discuss issues in local and global education, focusing on the advantages of virtual education. We detail application-related features of the cited course model and discuss the implementation of virtual classrooms in higher education.

As online classrooms have recently become integral to the teaching of Business Education in the United Kingdom (UK) and as a key challenge here is to use available resources effectively, all business teachers must be proficient in deploying virtual learning. Most international students entering Business Education do not know how to use a virtual learning environment (VLE); many are grappling with the transition to adult life, living alone and away from families. All business teachers are therefore responsible for engaging and involving each of them; by adopting a socio-cultural model in virtual learning classrooms, they can work with students on the gradual development of key business skills and characteristics with potentially broad application. This article discusses: a socio-cultural approach to the online teaching and learning of Business Education, together with implications for practice; the socio-cultural model proposed by Brenton (2014), with its key elements – people (who), shared purpose (why), locating framework and social conditions (where), method (how) and activity (what). This particular model clearly incorporates the social and cultural characteristics of the student in business; it explains to students and develops in them such key business skills as problem-solving, creative thinking, communication, planning and organisation; it encourages in them self-management, self-efficacy, self-monitoring and a sense of responsibility. All of these skills and characteristics enhance employability and pave the way to future success in business enterprise. Understanding what Business Education students each bring to the virtual classroom is therefore essential to the creation of independent learners. The article focuses on the cultivation of collaboration in online classrooms and on developing communities of learning, with ideas for practice; it outlines the role of the lecturer in the virtual classroom, especially in sustaining inclusivity; it concludes by affirming the importance of lecturers’ development of a social collaborative process in virtual classrooms, of their establishment of an inclusive online ethos and of their encouragement of skills that enhance employability and lead to success in business too. Many learners with anxiety, shyness and personal barriers to integration with other business students can benefit from the application of a socio-cultural model in VLEs. There are clear implications for all key stakeholders – students, lecturers, policy makers and developers of online classroom technology.

This project aims to provide students with disabilities the same in class learning experience through virtual reality technology, 360-degree video capture, and the use of Arduino units. These technologies will be combined to facilitate communication between teachers in physical classrooms with students in virtual classrooms. The goal is to provide a person who is affected by a disability (which makes it hard to be in a traditional classroom) the same benefits of a safe and interactive learning environment.

In this column, I continue to focus on creating supportive relationships in the virtual classroom amid the pandemic and growing social unrest. As many schools continue to shift between hybrid and remote learning, I ask, how do we address our own and students’ emotional well-being to promote active learning during the pandemic? How can we as teachers help students cope with this chronic stressor, be it the COVID-19 pandemic or the racial inequality? I share my own personal experiences and argue that affect/feelings/emotions are embodied thoughts imbricated with social values and often involved in the preservation of social expectations and power relations. I suggest that educators recognize affect/feelings/emotions as a critical part of students’ embodied experiences, encourage students to attend to their surrounding world and live their life with heightened consciousness and reflectiveness. I end this column with a few curriculum ideas for readers to consider.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze strategies that promote sustainability in higher education institutions (HEIs), focusing on the case study of a federal institute of higher education in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach The research was based on a scientific literature review on sustainability in HEIs, to identify the recurrent actions for sustainability in these institutions; and a case study of a federal institute of higher education in Brazil, to illustrate how these actions are being implemented by HEIs. Findings Concerns about sustainability, prompted by the Brazilian federal legislature, led federal HEI to change its internal processes, infrastructure and organizational culture toward sustainability. Practical implications The findings presented in this study, more specifically the sustainability plan of the Federal Institute for Education, Science and Technology of Santa Catarina, aligned with the recommendations proposed, can be used and replicated in other HEIs. Originality/value Scientific literature about organizational changes led by sustainability concerns, in HEIs specifically, still needs more attention in the academia. By addressing the case of a Brazilian public institution of higher education, this paper contributes to the literature on sustainability in higher education by reporting the process of implementation of a sustainability plan.

Abstract This article sought to discuss the grammar of race relations and racism from the case of a professor at the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Sao Paulo (IFSP) who posted on his Facebook profile and was denounced as racist by some social segment. Methodologically, we elaborated a case study that analyses what was said by the professor, as well as the notes released by the institution, collectives, and black movements, newspaper articles about the case, and interviews with students. We infer that the grammar of social relations with a racial focus is provoking changes in representation, so there is a “shock” between the senses targeted between the actors. We analyze, through a Weberian perspective, the social relations that are established and we understand that they are marked by probabilities of actions within a targeted sense (formal coordination) by the actors. Thus, we look at the discursive performances of the agents who uttered and justified themselves by understanding the grammar of racial relations. For this purpose, we carried out an analytical description of the case by constructing a theoretical contribution, meaning, and conceptualizing key categories such as racial democracy. Keywords: Social Relationships; Racisms; Targeted sense. The study was carried out through the theoretical foundation about the conceptions and objectives of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology, and also on the social role of the librarians of this educational institute. These Federal Institutes were created in Brazil in 2009 and they offer basic and higher education. This study aims at investigating, analyzing, and understanding if the librarians of the Federal Institutes of Education, Science, and Technology recognize their social roles as professionals that can contribute to the development of cognitive skills with regards to the information in the library’s users. A case study was carried out with all the librarians of the Federal Institutes and questionnaires were the method used for collecting data. It should be noted in the librarians’ answers that they recognize their social roles, and they act according to what they recognize. In their everyday practices, these librarians try to minimize the difficulties that the library’s users face in relation to the search, location, use, assessment, dissemination, and understanding of information.
