This study is aimed at describing discourse studies especially at cohesion from reader’s opinion strip. This is literary research, so the writer uses descriptive qualitative approach. In this research, documentation and note taking technique are used to collect the data. There are two objectives of the research: 1) to carry out the types of grammatical cohesion used in the “Issues of the Day” strip in The Jakarta Post on March 2012 edition and 2) to find out the types of lexical cohesion used in the “Issues of The Day” strip in The Jakarta Post on March 2012 edition. After investigating the English sentences used in the “Issues of the Day” strip in The Jakarta Post on March 2012 edition, the writer found several findings as follows: 1) based on the analysis of grammatical cohesion, the writer found there are references, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunctions; 2) based on the analysis of lexical cohesion, the writer found repetitions, synonyms, hyponyms, meronyms, antonyms, and collocations. The writer expects that it is able to contribute the science of linguistic and able to be guidance for all readers.

This paper explores the renditions produced by the interpreters in sermon interpreting at ROCK Church Denpasar Bali. It aims at finding out and investigating the categories and the motives of the renditions produced by the interpreters in the setting under investigated. The method adopted for this study is a descriptive qualitative approach. The data of this study is based on six transcribed audio-video recordings of interpreter-mediated sermons on Sunday services, involving six visiting preachers, congregation, and three interpreters. The sermons are preached in English and interpreted short-consecutively into Indonesian. The data were collected through observation method which was applied at once with the implementation of note-taking technique, and were analyzed using the qualitative method and comparative technique. As a theoretical framework, the taxonomy of renditions proposed by Wadensjö (1998) has been utilized. The result of the study shows that there were eight categories of rendition produced by the interpreters in sermon interpreting on Sunday services at ROCK church Denpasar Bali. The categories of rendition produced by the interpreters were close renditions, expanded renditions, reduced renditions, substituted renditions, summarized renditions, two-part renditions, non-renditions, and zero renditions.

The purpose of this study is to describe the elements of lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion elements in the poem discourse "Museum of Destruction of Documents" by Afrizal Malna. This research uses descriptive qualitative method by using library, reading, and note taking techniques. Data analysis was performed by data reduction, data presentation, then described and verified. Based on the research findings, it was concluded that the grammatical cohesion used in the collection of poetry "Museum Destroyer Documents" by Afrizal Malna found as many as 313 markers which include; 1) referencing 168 markers; 2) absorption of 2 markers; and 3) assembling 143 markers. Furthermore, the use of lexical cohesion used in the discourse on the poem "Document Shredder" by Afrizal Malna was found as many as 93 markers which included; 1) repetition of 39 markers; 2) synonym 11 markers; 3) antonimi 29 markers; 4) collocation of 9 markers; and 5) equivalence of 5 markers. When combined, the total usage of both is 406 markers.

Cohesion and coherence have an important role in writing essays, both those that will write or those that have become essays. Therefore this study aims to determine the use of cohesion and coherence in the KKN novel in Penari Village. The object of this research is the KKN novel in Penari Village by Simpleman. The subject of this research is the sentence which contains the type of cohesion and coherence in the KKN novel in Penari Village by Simpleman. The approach used is a qualitative approach. A qualitative approach is an approach that presents data in the form of sentences. The design of this research is by collecting data, then the data is grouped according to the use of cohesion and coherence types, then the data is analyzed and presented in an informal form. Data collection techniques using reading techniques and note taking techniques. The technique of presenting the results of the analysis using informal techniques. Informal techniques are techniques that present data in the form of common words that are easily understood by the reader.             The results of this study are grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion and coherence types. Grammatical cohesion includes: reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. The use of lexical cohesion are of two types namely, repetition and collocation. The use of coherence there are five relationships, namely: the sum relationship, the sequential relationship, the resistance relationship, the causal relationship, and the time relationship.

Fokus penelitian ini adalah menemukan pergeseran penerjemahan serta mengungkapkan tingkat keakuratan dan tingkat keterbacaan dalam penerjemahan kosakata teknis pandemi Covid-19 dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Teori yang digunakan sebagai dasar analisis adalah teori penerjemahan Catford (1965) dan Baker (1992). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini diambil dari lini masa Facebook dan Instagram Badan Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa antara tanggal 10 Maret 2020—6 Oktober 2020. Pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik catat, rekam, dan kuesioner. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terjadi tujuh belas pergeseran, yaitu enam belas pergeseran struktur dan satu pergeseran kelas kata. Berdasarkan penilaian beberapa informan ahli, ditemukan bahwa 91,58% pengalihan makna sudah akurat; 7,47% pengalihan makna kurang akurat; dan 0,93% pengalihan makna tidak akurat. Selain itu, para informan ahli juga menilai bahwa dari 20,51% tingkat keterbacaan penerjemahan, 71,01% dikategorikan sangat mudah, 15,94% dikategorikan mudah, 13,08% dikategorikan sulit, dan 4,34% dikategorikan sangat sulit. This research focuses on finding translation shifts, exposing translation level of accuracy, and the level of readability of translation of Covid-19 pandemic technical vocabulary from English to Indonesian. The theory used as the base of analysis for this research are the theory of translation by Catford (1965) and Baker (1992). This research uses descriptive qualitative approach. The data used in this research is taken from Facebook and Instagram timeline of Language Development Agency between 10 March 2020 until 6 October 2020. Note-taking, recording and questionnaire technique were used to gather the data. The result of this research shows that there are 17 shifts, they are 16 structural shifts and 1 shift of word class. Based on raters’ rate, that from 91.58% rated transfer of meaning, there are 7.47% are less accurate, and there is only 0.93% inaccurate transfer of meaning. Moreover, they also mentioned that from 20.51% translation readability rate, there are 71.01% are categorized as very readable, 15.94% are readable, 13.08% are less readable, and 4.34% are categorized as least readable.

The aim of this research is to define a linguistic framework based on Donald Trump's manuscript at the 2017 General Assembly since Trump is an influential person in the world and it was essential to note how the impact of his speech could have a strong effect on audiences. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze and describe the types of lexical cohesion of HallidayHasan (1976) and Renkema's Theory (2004). In regard, the researchers analyze the most frequently known types of lexical cohesion following the analysis of the data and drawing conclusions based on the results. The findings showed that 80 data were found and 36 data included repetitions, 10 synonyms, 2 general terms, 3 superordinates, 10 collocations, 5 hyponymies, 6 antonyms, 27 anaphoras, and no cataphora and metonymy found in this analysis. After analyzing the results, the most dominant type found was repetition, which meant emphasizing their speech to show how powerful the American and show profound admiration for others.

This research is a pragmatic study on politeness strategies employed by the characters   in   The   chronicles   of   Narnia movie  in  the  context  of  family  discourse. This research using Brown and Levinson theory  about  the  types  of  politeness strategies. The objectives of this research are (1) To identify   the types of politeness strategies in the chronicles of Narnia movie (2). To analyze the way politeness strategies utterancesthe chronicles of Narnia movie. (3).To describe the function of the politeness strategies used in the chronicles of  Narnia movie.This research used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were in the form of utterances  which  contain  politeness strategies. The data source was The Chronicles of Narnia movie script. The data were collected by note-taking technique then they were classified and analyzed. The trustworthiness was attained by using credibility  through  two  kinds  of triangulation: by observers and theories.

Being polite is significant to maintain good communications as well as social relationship and therefore various strategies are applied to show language politeness. This sociopragmatic study deals with negative politeness found in What Would You Do? TV show to describe the types of negative politeness strategies and investigate the reasons of choosing those strategies. This research applied a descriptive qualitative approach supported by statistics. The data were in the form of utterances containing negative politeness strategies, sourced in the conversations and the scripts between the participants and the actors. There were 106 data collected by note-taking technique from the show’s YouTube channel. The trustworthiness was attained through analyst triangulation. The findings show that seven negative politeness strategies are used by the participants in their responses to the actors: Being Indirect (12), Questions, Hedges (40), Minimizing the Imposition (12), Apologizing (25), Giving Difference (9), Being Pessimistic (6), and State the FTA as General Rule (2). The dominance of Questions, Hedges relates to the options provided to the addressee to accept or refuse the speaker’s request and to make utterances sound more polite. Related to reasons, the payoffs factor was dominant (with 84 occurrences) because it is the basic factor the participants might think about what they will get by applying a certain strategy. The circumstances factor has 22 occurrences, consisting of social distance (14), social power (5), and rank of imposition (3).

Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas tentang pemerolehan fonem bahasa ibu atau pertama pada anak usia 2,6 tahun. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu mendeskripsikan bentuk dari pemerolehan fonem bahasa ibu dalam studi kasus pada Rasyid Hidayat usia 2,6 tahun dengan melihat fonem-fonem bahasa yang sudah dikuasai.  Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Pendekatan ini mencoba menggambarkan dan memahami sesuatu terkait fenomena yang akan diteliti berdasarkan perspektif peneliti, yaitu bentuk pemerolehan fonem bahasa ibu pada Rasyid Hidayat. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode simak dan metode cakap. Teknik yang digunakan dalam melaksanakan metode tersebut adalah teknik catat dan rekam. Penyajian hasil analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah secara formal dan informal. Penelitian tentang pemerolehan fonem bahasa ibu pada anak usia 2,6 tahun, peneliti menemukan bentuk-bentuk fonem yang sudah dikuasai oleh Rasyid Hidayat. Adapun fonem bahasa yang sudah dikuasai adalah (1) semua fonem vokal, yaitu /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, dan /o/ yang menduduki semua posisi dalam setiap kata, (2) fonem konsonan yang sudah dikuasai dan belum semuanya menduduki semua posisi dalam kata pada usia 2,6 tahun yaitu adalah /p/, /b/, /m/, /n/, /t/, /h/, /s/, /c/, /w/, /y/, /q/,  dan /k/. Abstract: This study discusses about the phonological acquisition of mother tongue or first language of a child, 2.6 years old, namely Rasyid Hidayat. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of phonological acquisition of mother tongue of Rasyid Hidayat by analyzing the phonemes of language that have been mastered. In this study, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative approach which describes and gives understanding about language phenomenon that the researcher want to analyze based on the researcher’s point of view.  The data collected were gained from recording and note taking. In presenting the data analyzed, the researcher uses formal and informal way. The findings show that the participant has mastered 1) all vowel phonemes such as /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, and /o/ which have occupied all positions in many words, 2) consonant phonemes such as /p/, /b/, /m/, /n/, /t/, /h/, /s/, /c/, /w/, /y/, /q/, and /k/ where not all of them have already occupied all positions in some words.

The research aims to uncover the symbols in the novel The Alchemist and to gain knowledge about the moral teachings in the symbol. This research is descriptive qualitative approach. Data sources in this study are words, phrases or sentences in the novel Alchemist. Data collection method is a literature study method with note taking technique. Data were analyzed using description and content analysis methods. The results showed that the novel The Alchemist contained many symbols. These symbols include: (1) wise parents, who symbolize both negative and positive things. From his appearance, parents can symbolize something bad, but behind his old age he symbolizes a knowledge that is very much and wise; (2) stones that symbolize something hard, not easily broken, and can provide clues to something; and (3) deserts or deserts which can be interpreted as symbols of drought, aridity, unattractiveness, emptiness, despair, determination for ignorance, and also as symbols of devotion.
