The use of metaphors in the refugee discourse since 2015 has so far mostly been explored in newspapers in different EU countries. In this study, we combine linguistic discourse metaphor analysis with a corpus-based approach, complementing qualitative and quantitative corpus evidence from Wikipedia migration corpus to explore verbal and multimodal metaphorical patterns. As a multimodal and multilingual hypertext, Wikipedia, represents a highly relevant source of information and a unique source for the multimodal and cross-linguistic discourse linguistic analysis. In this paper metaphorical expressions are considered as a transtextual discursive phenomenon in the light of Foucaudian tradition. The results of the study show that the analyzed migration discourse in Wikipedia is like the newspaper migration discourse predominantly structured by metaphorical patterns that draw from the source domains water flow/natural catastrophes as well as military/warfare. These source domains are conventionally used in relation to a wide range of target domains (multivalency), however, they play a constitutive role in the analyzed discourse by providing a specific view of events and emphasizing certain aspects and evaluations. The patterning of water flow metaphors across Wikipedia articles and talk pages is in multimodal metaphors extended, elaborated and reinforced in visual mode, referring to those migrating as a flow, wave, influx. However, especially on Wikipedia talk pages Wikipedians point to the dehumanization of those fleeing and the securitization of migration through metaphorical expressions as a problematic linguistic discourse practice

Extremophilic microorganisms represent a unique source of novel natural products. Among them, cold adapted bacteria and particularly alpine microorganisms are still underexplored. Here, we describe the isolation and characterization of a novel Gram-positive, aerobic rod-shaped alpine bacterium (KRL4), isolated from sediments from the Karuola glacier in Tibet, China. Complete phenotypic analysis was performed revealing the great adaptability of the strain to a wide range of temperatures (5–40 °C), pHs (5.5–8.5), and salinities (0–15% w/v NaCl). Genome sequencing identified KRL4 as a member of the placeholder genus Exiguobacterium_A and annotation revealed that only half of the protein-encoding genes (1522 of 3079) could be assigned a putative function. An analysis of the secondary metabolite clusters revealed the presence of two uncharacterized phytoene synthase containing pathways and a novel siderophore pathway. Biological assays confirmed that the strain produces molecules with antioxidant and siderophore activities. Furthermore, intracellular extracts showed nematocidal activity towards C. elegans, suggesting that strain KRL4 is a source of anthelmintic compounds.

PurposeIn today’s uncertain business environment, Industry 4.0 is regarded as a viable strategic plan for addressing a wide range of manufacturing-related challenges. However, it appears that its level of adoption varies across many countries. In the case of a developing economy like India, practitioners are still in the early stages of implementation. The implementation of Industry 4.0 appears to be complex, and it must be investigated holistically in order to gain a better understanding of it. Therefore, an attempt has been made to examine the Industry 4.0 implementation for the Indian manufacturing organization in a detailed way by analyzing the complexities of relevant variables.Design/methodology/approachSAP-LAP (situation-actor-process and learning-action-performance) and an efficient interpretive ranking process (e-IRP) were used to analyze the various variables influencing Industry 4.0 implementation. The variables were identified, as per SAP-LAP, through a thorough review of the literature and based on the perspectives of various experts. The e-IRP has been used to prioritize the selected elements (i.e. actors with respect to processes and actions with respect to performance) of SAP-LAP.FindingsThis study ranked five stakeholders according to their priority in Industry 4.0 implementation: government policymakers, industry associations, research and academic institutions, manufacturers and customers. In addition, the study also prioritized important actions that need to be taken by these stakeholders.Practical implicationsThe results of this study would be useful in identifying and managing the various actors and actions related to Industry 4.0 implementation. Accordingly, their prioritized sequence would be useful to the practitioners in preparing the well-defined and comprehensive strategic roadmap for Industry 4.0.Originality/valueThis study has adopted qualitative and quantitative approaches for identifying and prioritizing different variables of Industry 4.0 implementation. This, in turn, helps the stakeholder to comprehend the concept of Industry 4.0 in a much simpler way.

Modified stepwise model of gas sorption process with finely dispersed water flow. The sorption model allows forecasting the intensity of hazardous gases deposition with adequate for the emergency recovery conditions accuracy using minimum input parameters. This allows using the sorption model under the conditions of emergency and increasing the forecasting promptness. Use of chemical neutralizer is proposed to increase the effectiveness of chlorine hazardous gas deposition. Use of sodium hydroxide is proposed as the chlorine chemical neutralizer, which is easily dissolved in water, non-toxic and easy to store. An experimental laboratory facility was developed and created with the purpose of experimental verification of the sorption processes, which allows researching the sorption processes by liquid aerosols within a wide range of dispersity. Adequacy of the existing models as well as the modified one was verified experimentally. The verification results showed a 5% indicator of the theoretical and experimental results compliance.

The wide range of uses of Moringa oleifera in recent time has witnessed increasing demand of its foliar and seed products in nutritional, medical and ecological applications. The upsurge of demand for these products needs to be balanced with new varieties of improved performance to meet the supply chain. To achieve this, morphological diversity assessment is prerequisite for future crop improvement programme. Therefore, numerical analyses of the external morphology of leaf and fruit of thirty accessions of Moringa oleifera were assessed. The study was carried out on both qualitative and quantitative characters to assess the diversity at morphological level to establish the phenetic relationships and the delimitation of accessions. Relationship studies showed considerable correlation between the leaf and fruits characters that produced clear and reproducible threats and were selected for diversity study. Numerical analysis of the qualitative and quantitative characters clustered the accessions into five groups – operational taxonomic units (OTUs) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 were clustered in group one; OTUs 6 and 8 were clustered in group two and three respectively; OTUs 15 and 16 in group four and OUT 23 in group five cluster membership. Principal Component Analysis was carried out to augment the Cluster Analysis which showed large morphological diversity existing in accessions of Moringa oleifera hence, infraspecific classification is hereby proposed.  These analysis particularly traits related to leaf and fruits yield can also be utilised for crop improvement programme.

Abstract Idea management and web-based idea management systems application situation and potential in Latvia have been identified by applying qualitative and quantitative methods – community survey and expert interviews. It has been found that there is a tendency in Latvia that ideas in the organisations are generated within the frame of the same groups of people and there is no definite idea management system or effective idea management. It is important to stress that the results of the research also show that web-based idea management systems are not widely used in Latvia, but there is a perspective to apply them in private, public and academic sectors. Perspective areas to apply web-based IMS are cultivation of open and user-driven innovation, encouragement of civic participation, contribution to public communication and a wide range of creative cultural promotion.

Abstract The desired mechanical properties of the nickel-based or titanium forgings used in gas turbines for aircraft and power generation applications can be controlled by varying the rate of cooling from the so-called solution temperature during an initial heat treatment process. The use of dilute air-water spray cooling of these forgings is a technique which can provide heat transfer rates lying between those associated with conventional oil quenching or convective air-cooling. Air assisted atomisation can result in fine sprays over a wide range of water flow rates and it has a further advantage in that the air “sweeps” the surface and hence helps to prevent the build up of deleterious vapour films at high surface temperatures. The paper presents experimental data for the heat transfer rates associated with the use of these sprays to cool surfaces from temperatures of approximately 800°C. Many forgings contain surface recesses, which can lead to build up or “pooling” of the water so that the effect of variations in surface geometry is also reported. Periodic interruption of the water flow is a technique which can be employed to provide additional control of the heat transfer rate, particularly at temperatures below 500°C so that data is also presented for pulsed sprays.

The area of deformation of the earth’s surface from underground mine workings is generally called the undermined territory. However, the conditions for undermining the surface are very diverse, and therefore the surface deformation takes place with a wide range of features. This creates difficulties for determining the possibility of development, expertise in choosing safety measures, lack of unification of research methods and results, as well as a significant gap in the expectations of developers from the results of the study and design requests. Such gaps are due to the fact that it is impossible to build direct relationships between the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the displacement process, as well as to relate them to the structures of buildings. On the example of the study of the Shershnevskoye field by geophysical methods, structural changes of the surface layer to a depth of 12 m were evaluated. Identified areas of the alleged existence of old vertical and horizontal mine workings. The authors have proposed a solution to the relationship of the dependences of qualitative and quantitative characteristics by compiling ratings of the developed areas, which will provide a connection with the parametric characteristics of buildings and structures under construction. A number of necessary general and special safety measures are suggested for the operation of the developed areas from old mines.

The flow characteristics of a highly viscous oil and water mixture in a circular microchannel have been investigated. Water and silicone oil with a viscosity of 863 mPa.s were injected into a fused silica microchannel with a diameter of 250 μm. Before each experiment, the microchannel was initially saturated with either oil or water. In the initially oil-saturated case, different liquid-liquid flow patterns were observed and classified over a wide range of oil and water flow rates. As a special case, the flow of water at zero oil flow rate in a microchannel initially filled with silicone oil was also studied. When the microchannel was initially saturated with water, the oil formed a jet in water at the injection point but developed an instability at the oil-water interface downstream and eventually broke up into droplets.
