The article is dedicated to the outstanding Russian histologist Professor Anton Vitalievich Nemilov, who, being a student of St. Petersburg Imperial University, was one of the first students of Alexander Stanislavovich Dogel, the world-famous Russian scientist, the founder of neurohistology. Having so far shown a bright talent of a researcher and experimenter in his student years, Anton Vitalievich was invited to prepare for a professorship at the university and over and above met expectations based on him. He significantly contributed to the development of neurohistology, histophysiology, including histophysiology of the reproductive system. Anton Vitalievich did a lot for development of endocrinology, which he studied in a general biological but not in a purely medical aspect; this was new and valuable for that period. Finally, he made his contribution to the development of cell theory. A talented teacher, an excellent lecturer, an author of a number of brilliant textbooks, a consummate popularizer of science, an active public figure – Anton Vitalievich demonstrated so many diverse talents during his life, which was not really long, that their combination in one person seems simply unbelievable. His life was in full swing, he was full of creative plans, but the Great Patriotic War prevented their implementation. It started when Anton Vitalievich was 62 years old. Professor A.V. Nemilov wanted to continue research at his native Leningrad University, refused to be evacuated, and remained in the besieged city. With his peculiar enthusiasm, Anton Vitalievich joined defense work, angrily denounced fascism in his articles and radio speeches. However, hunger and cold of the blockade undermined his strength, and he died of exhaustion on February 2, 1942. He was under 63 years old. The article dedicated to Anton Vitalievich Nemilov presents milestones of his life and work, his contribution to science, his professional and personal traits. The paper also highlights his participation in the fight against fascism and tragic death during the blockade of Leningrad.

Academician Yulian Alexandrovich Shimansky (1883–1962), an outstanding Russian scientist and shipbuilder, is known for his works in the field of structural mechanics, ship theory and ship design. His monograph “Conventional indicators of a vessel’s ice performance”, published as a separate volume of “Trudy Arkticheskogo nauchno-issledovatelskogo instituta [Proceedings of the Arctic Institute]” (ANII) in 1938, is well known to the specialists in sea ice technology. This work has played an important role in the development of sea ice technology and in designing icebreakers and ice-going vessels both in Russia / USSR and worldwide. The reviews of Shimansky’s contributions to Arctic shipbuilding are usually limited to the analysis of this work. The new materials from the archival documents and two publications that are practically unknown to the researchers allow to considerably broaden the knowledge about his role in the emergence of the studies on the vessels’ ice performance at one of the turning points in the development of sea ice technology: the creation of the first ever ice model basin. Immediately after the end of the Great Patriotic War in 1945, the ANII in Leningrad set out to implement the plans for the creation of the experimental base for studying the processes of icebreakers and ice-going vessels’ motion in ice, i. e. the ice model basin. Shimansky became actively engaged in this work from the very beginning. The archival documents demonstrate his role in the creation of the first ice model basin and the articles rediscovered by us allow to reconstruct the process of creating the theory of a vessel’s motion in ice by Shimansky that is still employed in all ice model basins across the world.

A joint center has been established by the University of Pittsburgh and the Excerpta Medica Foundation. The basic objective of the Center is to seek ways in which the health sciences community may achieve increasingly convenient and economical access to scientific findings. The research center will make use of facilities and resources of both participating institutions. Cooperating from the University of Pittsburgh will be the School of Medicine, the Computation and Data Processing Center, and the Knowledge Availability Systems (KAS) Center. The KAS Center is an interdisciplinary organization engaging in research, operations, and teaching in the information sciences.Excerpta Medica Foundation, which is the largest international medical abstracting service in the world, with offices in Amsterdam, New York, London, Milan, Tokyo and Buenos Aires, will draw on its permanent medical staff of 54 specialists in charge of the 35 abstracting journals and other reference works prepared and published by the Foundation, the 700 eminent clinicians and researchers represented on its International Editorial Boards, and the 6,000 physicians who participate in its abstracting programs throughout the world. Excerpta Medica will also make available to the Center its long experience in the field, as well as its extensive resources of medical information accumulated during the Foundation’s twenty years of existence. These consist of over 1,300,000 English-language _abstract of the world’s biomedical literature, indexes to its abstracting journals, and the microfilm library in which complete original texts of all the 3,000 primary biomedical journals, monitored by Excerpta Medica in Amsterdam are stored since 1960.The objectives of the program of the combined Center include: (1) establishing a firm base of user relevance data; (2) developing improved vocabulary control mechanisms; (3) developing means of determining confidence limits of vocabulary control mechanisms in terms of user relevance data; 4. developing and field testing of new or improved media for providing medical literature to users; 5. developing methods for determining the relationship between learning and relevance in medical information storage and retrieval systems’; and (6) exploring automatic methods for retrospective searching of the specialized indexes of Excerpta Medica.The priority projects to be undertaken by the Center are (1) the investigation of the information needs of medical scientists, and (2) the development of a highly detailed Master List of Biomedical Indexing Terms. Excerpta Medica has already been at work on the latter project for several years.

There began a real interest in the universities of the Muslim world for the Arabic language by providing specialized courses for this purpose since the early eighties and  the International Islamic University Malaysia established in 1983 has been the most active university in this regard. And this activity of the university drew the interest of the researcher who found it worthy of investigation and scientific documentation as well as of revision, if necessary, not in order to pay tribute to the experience, but for taking advantage and learning from specialists interested in this vital field of the fields of Arabic language service which is actually service of Islam and its civilization considering the strong connection between Islam and the Arabic language, the language of the Qur’Én , the most distinctive feature of Islamic identity and resilience of Islamic civilization.

There is a culture of disengagement from social consideration in engineering disciplines. This means that first year engineering students, who arrive planning to change the world through engineering, lose this passion as they progress through the engineering curriculum. The community driven technology innovation and investment program described in this paper is an attempt to reverse this trend by fusing community engagement with the normal engineering design process. This approach differs from existing project or trip based approaches – outreach – because the focus is on local communities with which the university team forms a long-term partnership through weekly in-person meetings and community driven problem statements – engagement.

In doing so, one can discern the directions for reform in order to put the university system in a competitive advantage for an emerging knowledge society. It is clear that construction and demolition wastes (CDW) are constantly increasing throughout the world and these wastes can be used effectively to minimize the consumption of natural resources in the manufacture of more sustainable concrete. The CDW occupy an important segment of world waste production and its generation reached approximately 3 billion tons in 2012 in 40 countries [1]. Although this topic has been studied in the world, it is still valid for the reuse of waste that is constantly increasing, and although in many countries there are already examples of its use this type of concrete in Colombia and in the Medellìn city lacks applications. This project proposes the application of a sustainable concrete made with CDW and coal ash in the Medellín city for its implementation in the construction of urban furniture. A university community diagnosis of the needs in terms of furnishing was made. With the design reached, a modular chair was proposed to enable spaces within the university. The mechanical characteristics of the concrete and the design of the chair are evaluated and a simulation is done through finite elements to evaluate the viability of the proposed concrete, finding that with these properties is possible to manufacture durable and sustainable furniture that serves as an example for the application of sustainable materials
