Objective: Family function is one of the main effective factors on stability of the family. Family therapy can promote family function and performances. This study aimed to assess the effects of family therapy on family function among couples in Yazd province (Iran) based on the McMaster model. Method: The research population was selected from volunteer couples in Yazd in 2017 who were invited by publicity announcement to participate in this research. Finally, 40 couples were selected and randomly divided into 2 intervention and control groups. Participants responded to the demographic and Family Assessment Device (FAD) questionnaires. The obtained information was investigated using inferential and descriptive statistics and SPSS 21 software. Results: The results showed significant differences between the intervention and control groups in problem-solving (p = 0.01), communication (p < 0.0001), emotional responsiveness (p = 0.01), emotional involvement (p < 0.0001), and general function (p = 0.04). The roles and behavior control domains were improved after the intervention in 2 groups, but the differences were not significant. Conclusion: Family therapy based on McMaster model can promote the skills of problem- solving, family communication, emotional responsiveness, emotional involvement, and general function in couples. Healthy family functioning is an important domain of interest for mental health professionals who provide family interventions. Our findings add substantially to family professionals’ knowledge about patterns of family function in Iranian families.

Abstract Objective: sexual desire is an integral part of an identity and character of a human being, that affect how to behave with spouse. This study aimed to study the effect of cognitive-behavioral counseling (CBT) on sexual compatibility of new married couples in Sanandaj City in 2018. Method: This was a randomized clinical trial study and participants were 80 new married couples whose information was recorded at the premarital counseling centers that were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. Intervention group received 8 weekly 120-minute sessions of group consultation with cognitive-behavioral approach. Data were collected before the intervention, after 8 weeks of counseling, and two months after the last counseling session using the National Sexual Compatibility Scale. Data were analyzed using chi-square inferential statistics and independent t-test or nonparametric Mann-Whitney test. analysis of covariance was used to control of potential confounders. Results: The mean values of sexual compatibility in two intervention and control groups before counseling were 94.20±3.30 and 93.41±6.84 respectively. These scores reached to 100.11±2.96 in the intervention group and 98.83±3.66 in the control group immediately after the intervention. Also two months after the end of counseling, this rate was 101.98±4.03 in the intervention group and 98.83±3.66 in the control group. The intra-group comparison of sexual adjustment scores before and after counseling and two months after the intervention, showed a statistically significant difference (P <0.001). The trend of changes in the control group was not significant (P >0.05). There was a significant difference between two groups in level of scores two months after the intervention (P <0.001). Conclusion: CBT was effective in improving the level of sexual compatibility between new married couples. It is recommended to use this method of counseling, along with other services provided at pre-marriage counseling centers, to continue and improve the quality of sex and vitality of couples.

This study investigated the effects of problem-solving method of teaching on secondary school students achievement and retention in Social Studies. The study adopted the quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test, control group design. The sample for the study consisted of 240 Junior Secondary School Class II students randomly selected from six secondary schools in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The instrument used for the study is the Social Studies Achievement Test (SSAT) designed and validated by the researcher. Section A of the instrument consisted of the bio-data of the respondents while section B was made up of 40 multiple-choice items designed to measure the students achievement and retention in Social Studies. Four hypotheses were raised and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The data were analyzed using t-test and ANCOVA statistical tools. The results showed that there is a significant difference between the achievement mean scores of students in the experimental and control groups. There is a significant difference between the pre-test mean scores and achievement mean scores of students in the experimental and control groups. There is a significant difference between the retention mean scores of students in the experimental and control groups. There is a significant difference between the achievement mean scores and the retention mean scores of students in the experimental and control groups. It was discovered in the study that problem-solving method is more effective than conventional lecture method in improving students achievement in Social Studies. It was therefore recommended that teachers should be innovative in handling their lessons by relating them to the day-to-day life of students in such a way that the students will be challenged to put the lessons to practice as much as possible. Government should also emphasize the use of problem-solving method to teach Social Studies in secondary schools.

This study sought to determine the effect of the problem-solving approach on academic achievement of students in mathematics at the secondary level. The secondary school students studying mathematics constituted the population of this study. The students of 10th class of Government Pakistan Girls High School Rawalpindi were selected as a sample for the study. Sample size consisted of 48 students who were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group on the basis of pre-test. Treatment of the planned problem-solving approach is the guideline of Sherreen (2006) and Polya’s (1945) heuristic steps of the problem-solving approach. After the treatment, post-test was used to see the effects of the treatment. A two-tailed t-test was used to analyze the data, which revealed that both the experimental and control groups were almost equal in mathematics base at the beginning of the experiment. The experimental group outscored the control group significantly on the post-test.

Little is known about the long-term consequences of migraine for cognitive functioning. This study compared older migraine patients with matched controls on four measures of cognitive ability, in a blinded design. Migraine patients and case-matched controls were recruited from the database records of a pre-existing study of ageing. Data were available from four tests of cognitive ability: verbal/arithmetic problem solving, spatial problem solving, processing speed, and vocabulary. There were no significant differences between the mean scores of migraine and control groups on any of the four cognitive tests. In addition, there were no significant differences between migraine and control groups in the effect of age on any of the four tests. A long history of migraine does not compromise scores on the four cognitive tests used in this study. These tests are predictive of memory and executive functioning in cognitive ageing, but it remains possible that lower-level cognitive processes, particularly as assessed by visual tasks, may be vulnerable to migraine.

This study aimed to answer the question of whether the Tablet devices affected children's problem solving skills in hearing-impaired children. It was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The research involved sixteen five-year-old hearing-impaired children and divided these children equally into two groups (experimental and control group). The experimental hearing-impaired children played with an iPad devices for a period of 6 months. The children were assessed at entry to the study on their problem solving capacities, in order to compare their development, using four subscales of the British Ability Scale-II (BAS-II). The four sub-scales were non-verbal. The results revealed significant differences between the experimental and control groups in their capacity to solve problems, using four subscales of the BAS II: Block Building (BB), Picture Similarities (PS), Pattern Construction (PC) and Copying (C), which showed the effectiveness of the technology devices on the skills of hearing impaired children.

This study aims to explore pre-service physics teachers’ problem-solving skills through the implementation of problem solving virtual laboratory (PSVL) model on the concept of simple pendulum. This research has been conducted at a university in Bengkulu in academic year 2016/2017. This research is a quasi experiment with nonequivalent control group design. Subjects were 70 students divided into experimental and control groups. Students of the experimental group follow lab activity using PSVL model, while the control group used the expository virtual lab (EVL) model. Students’ problem-solving skills are explored using problem-solving skills tests. Based on the data analysis, it is found that the improvement of students’ problem solving skills of experimental group and control group differ significantly. Improved students’ problem solving skills in experiment group was higher than control group. It can be concluded that the implementation of the PSVL model can improve students’ problem-solving skills.

This study aimed to reveal the effectiveness of a training program based on a creative problem solving model (CPS) in developing mathematical power for 8th grade students in light of their mathematics achievement. To achieve this goal, a training program was designed to focus on a set of mathematical ideas and skills in an algebra quantities unit using creative problem solving strategies. The researcher designed a test to measure mathematics power. The sample of the study consisted of 135 female eight grade students randomly selected from Dhahra governorate, which was divided into experimental and control groups. For testing the study hypothesis, data were  analyzed by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA 2X3) in which eta squared was obtained. The study revealed a significant difference (α=0.05) in the means between the experimental and control groups in the mathematical power test in favor of the experimental group.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the education program prepared in accordance with the Common Knowledge Constructing Model on the 5th grade students' problem determination and problem-solving skills in the Science course "Biodiversity". The research sample consisted of 74 fifth grade students studying in a secondary school in Uskudar, Istanbul. In the research, a pre-test-post-test control group pattern, one of the quasi-experimental methods, was used. The study was implemented in the 2018-2019 academic year and 24 of the students were selected as experiment 1, 25 as experiment 2, and 25 as control group. In experiment 1 group, teaching in accordance with CKCM, in the experiment 2 group, teaching in accordance with CKCM was supported with out-of-school learning environments, and in the control group, teaching in accordance with the Science Curriculum. “Problem Identification and Problem-Solving Skills Test (PIPSST)” was used as a pre-test and post-test data collection tool in the experimental and control groups. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the education program with CKCM and out-of-school learning within the CKCM is more effective in increasing students' problem determination and problem-solving skills compared to teaching in accordance with the science lesson curriculum. It can be said that out-of-school education, which is included in the CKCM, increases students' problem determination and problem-solving skills more. In addition, it was concluded that CKCM and out-of-school learning and teaching improved skills such as analysis, synthesis, evaluation and prediction. When the answers given by the students in the experimental and control groups to the PIPSST open-ended problem were examined, it was observed that the physical, persuasion and political action solution suggestions changed in the experimental and control groups. It was determined that the most and different solution suggestions were in the experiment 2 group. This situation shows that the inclusion of out-of-school learning in the CKCM positively affects the physical, political and persuasion actions of the students towards the solution of the problem. This study investigates the effects of Acceptance and Commitment Group Therapy (ACGT) on marital satisfaction among Iranian, postgraduate married couples residing in Malaysia. The study utilised a true experimental (pretest/posttest, control group) design. Seventy-two students (36 couples) with the lowest scores from the Marital Satisfaction Inventory were randomly selected and randomly assigned into either the experimental or control group to receive either ACGT or no therapy. Subsequently, analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) showed significant differences in marital satisfaction between the experimental and control groups. The current study finds that marital satisfaction showed considerable enhancement after the ACGT, and besides, the effects of ACGT on marital satisfaction were retained after four weeks. The evaluation of the couples of the ACGT programme was also collected, which appeared to be satisfactory. This study has significant implications for marital satisfaction and counselling practice holistically.

Background: Since there has been no research on music therapy in a systematic way so far to develop motivation and hope in the course of treating individuals who are addicted to drugs, especially stimulant drugs whose use has increased in Iran, the present research was conducted to examine the effect of music therapy on the sense of loneliness and life expectancy in methamphetamine-addicted individuals who were attempting to quit. Methods: The research is pretest, posttest, and test and control groups. The research sample includes 30 methamphetamine-addicted individuals who were quitting in a midterm residential center in Sowme'eh Sara who were selected by convenience sampling and allocated to two control (N = 15) and experiment (N = 15) groups randomly. UCLA sense of loneliness scale and Schneider statistical questionnaire (1991) were used for data collection. Results: Studies showed that music therapy could reduce the symptoms related to the sense of loneliness and increased life expectancy (P < 0.001). Conclusions: It is concluded that mental health professionals can use group music therapy to improve sense of loneliness and life expectancy in methamphetamine-addicted individuals attempting to quit. Also, it is suggested that future research should investigate the effectiveness of group music therapy in improving other psychological constructs in addicted females and males who are attempting to quit.
