The entrepreneurial intentions of individuals play a phenomenal role in establishment of new ventures, which in turn facilitates economic development. The study aims to identify the various dimensions of personality traits along with several other precursors of entrepreneurial intentions and investigates impact of the identified factors on entrepreneurial intentions of top five university students in India. The data for research were collected through a structured questionnaire employing a 7-point Likert scale based on purposive sampling technique. The identified constructs considered to be determinants of entrepreneurial intentions were need for achievement, locus of control, risk-taking propensity, innovativeness, self-efficacy, proactiveness, perseverance, entrepreneurial alertness and entrepreneurial attitude. The findings of the study reveal that ‘need for achievement’ was the most significant precursor of entrepreneurial intentions; whereas, ‘entrepreneurial alertness’ and ‘entrepreneurial attitude’ dimensions of personality traits were also found to have a positive correlation with entrepreneurial intentions of university students. Moreover, entrepreneurial alertness partially mediates the relationship between self-efficacy and proactiveness on the one hand and entrepreneurial intentions on the other.

Entrepreneurs bring an enormous contribution to a country’s economic growth. Developing individual’s interest into new venture creation represents an important asset, especially for less developed countries where entrepreneurial activities are fundamental in enhancing economic growth. The recent economic crisis turned the attention of European policymakers towards entrepreneurship as a driving force for the creation of new job opportunities, regional/national competitiveness and growth. The aim of this article is to verify what relations are between locus of control, need for achievement and entrepreneurial intention of youth, following a cognitive approach and how much entrepreneurial education consolidates entrepreneurial skills and informs the young that entrepreneurship is a career option. To analyse entrepreneurial intentions, locus of control, need for achievement and entrepreneurial education in the context of Romania, this research used a quantitative design based on the answers to the questionnaire conducted during March 2017 to October 2017 on a sample of 270 students from two important Romanian universities. From the methodological point of view, several hypotheses have been developed and tested using multivariate logistic regression estimates, frequency analysis, internal consistency reliability of the constructs and moderating effects. The results illustrate that locus of control, need for achievement and entrepreneurial education proved to be important determinants for venture creation among young students, both independently and under the action of control variables. Also, respondents’ gender had a significant influence on one’s intention of opening a business in the future, with males being more inclined to become entrepreneurs than females.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the entrepreneurial characteristics among university students in India studying business and also comparing the levels of entrepreneurial characteristics between entrepreneurially inclined and entrepreneurially not inclined students. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the authors included six entrepreneurial characteristics, namely, risk taking propensity, innovativeness, locus of control, need for achievement, general self-efficacy and tolerance for ambiguity to define the entrepreneurial profile of students. Convenient sampling was used for collecting the data using a seven-point Likert scale based on 38-items self-administered questionnaire. Data were collected from three universities of different cities, namely, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, CSJM University, Kanpur and KMCUAF University, Lucknow. In total, 300 questionnaires were distributed in each of the universities, and 719 questionnaires were found statistically suitable for the study. Students were asked the question “What career option are you planning to choose after completing your graduation?” to know the inclination of the students. Findings Results of the t-test confirmed that levels of all the entrepreneurial characteristics are higher in entrepreneurially inclined students when compared to entrepreneurially not inclined students except in terms of general self-efficacy. Thus, entrepreneurially inclined students carry higher risk taking propensity, innovativeness, locus of control, need for achievement and tolerance for ambiguity. Research limitations/implications This study is confined only to undergraduate students from business background, and only three universities were included in the sample. Further research can be done taking students from different streams, namely, engineering, science and technology and arts etc. University-wise studies can also be conducted with the view to bring comparability among the students in terms of levels of entrepreneurial characteristics based upon the inclination shown. Practical implications This research provides the deeper understanding about what course contents are effective in developing entrepreneurial characteristics among the students and what are to be added with the view to raise potential entrepreneurs. Originality/value This paper contributes to establishing the differences across different entrepreneurial characteristics between entrepreneurially inclined and non-inclined undergraduate students.

Entrepreneurship education has been implemented in higher institutions in order to give exposure and develop students’ skills and interest in business. Although entrepreneurship course is taught in many universities, researchers are still arguing whether entrepreneurship education is related to the intention to start a business. This study investigated the impact of self-efficacy, independence, and motivation on entrepreneurial intentions among university students. A total of 496 questionnaires were completed by students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) who attended Fundamental of Entrepreneurship and Innovation during the academic year 2017/2018 as their compulsory subject. Using PLS-SEM, a two-step approach was used to analyze the data. Self-efficacy, independence, and motivation were found to significantly influence the students’ intention to become entrepreneur, explaining 52% of the variance in intention to become entrepreneur. Additionally, the findings indicate that motivation is the key factor in the entrepreneurial intent of the students. These findings contribute to a better understanding of students’ intention to become an entrepreneur, which is a necessary step to increase more university students to become job creators rather than job seekers. Thus, higher education institutions should revise the curriculum and establish measures to incorporate these three factors for enhancing entrepreneurship education programs at the university.   Keywords: Entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurial intention, independence, motivation, self-efficacy   Cite as: Omar, N. This empirical study aims at assessing the attitudes, perception and intention of university students towards entrepreneurship and new venture creation with a focus on gender differences in entrepreneurial perceptions and intentions to start new business in the future. Data were collected using a questionnaire-based survey of 350 students at the University of Khartoum in Sudan. The target population was the students in the final year in the University of Khartoum. The stratified sampling technique was used to select the sample size because the population consisted of a number of subgroups that differed in their characteristics. The results showed significant differences between genders in entrepreneurial intentions and its antecedents. Thus, it is important that customized approaches based on gender are needed for developing entrepreneurial intentions among college students.
