Reading comprehension skill is important in our social lives which relates to texts, emails, networking sites, and many others. In order to find an effective teaching reading technique, there are studies conducted and developed. One of the strategies to teach reading is called retelling. Many studies found that retelling strategy is effective to teach reading comprehension (Sylvia(2015); Ebaugh (2013); Schisler (2008)). However, there is a contradictory result between those studies found related to the implementation of two types of retelling strategy: oral and written retelling. Sylvia’s (2015) study claims that the written retelling significantly better than oral retelling strategy. However, Schisler’s (2008) study shows result in vice versa. Ebaugh’s (2013) study reveals that there were no significant differences between those two strategies. From the contradictory results seen from previous studies, further study is still needed to figure out more reliable research result on the effectiveness of both strategies.

This research manages to analyze the effectiveness of  DRA in enhancing students ‘skill in reading comprehension. The researchers carried out the research at SMP N 4 Takengon, in which they found that teachers faced some problems in teaching reading comprehension to students. To figure out the answer, the research applies quantitative research with experimental approach. After statistically obtaining and interpreting the data, the study concludes that Directed Reading Activity (DRA) method is able to increase students reading comprehension skill. This is because that Directed Reading Activity (DRA) is a teacher strategy in reading comprehension that emphasizes on instructional support before, during, and aftermath the reading. Meanwhile, the research found that this strategy is also able to increase and build stronger student vocabulary and reading skill. In conclusion, the DRA strategy is effective in improving students’ ability in reading comprehension, and also building their vocabulary.

Teaching reading in ESP Class is a challenging work not only for the English teacher but also for the students of Islamic Education Program or PAI of University of Muhammadiyah Jember. Teacher should be selective and creative in implementing teaching strategy in order to encourage students to comprehend reading text and communicate their understanding in the target language. The implementation of Read-Examine-Decide-Write (REDW) Strategy was done in ESP class of PAI. Read-Examine-Decide-Write Strategy was found as a good solution to teach them reading comprehension. By grouping the students in pair, they did their learning effectively through the steps of REDW. 75.8% or 22 of 29 students got score ≥ 75. They were active in comprehending the text through steps of REDW. The research result showed that Read-Examine-Decide-Write Strategy was able to improve PAI students’ reading comprehension in the first semester of 2015-2016 Academic Year. Keywords: reading comprehension, read-examine-decide-write strategy

Because of the importance of teaching reading comprehension to struggling young readers and the infrequency with which it has been implemented and evaluated, we designed a comprehensive first-grade reading comprehension program. We conducted a component analysis of the program’s decoding/fluency and reading comprehension dimensions (DF and COMP), creating DF and DF+COMP treatments to parse the value of COMP. Students ( N = 125) were randomly assigned to the two active treatments and controls. Treatment children were tutored three times per week for 21 weeks in 45-min sessions. Children in DF and DF+COMP together performed more strongly than controls on word reading and comprehension. However, pretreatment word reading appeared to moderate these results such that children with weaker beginning word reading across the treatments outperformed similarly low-performing controls to a significantly greater extent than treatment children with stronger beginning word reading outperformed comparable controls. DF+COMP children did not perform better than DF children. Study limitations and implications for research and practice are discussed.

In teaching reading comprehension, teaching strategy influence students’ reading comprehension. Strategy which was used in this experimental research was conventional strategy. Conventional strategy can be used as teaching strategy in teaching reading comprehension. The purpose of this research was to find out whether the students who are taught by conventional strategy have better reading comprehension of narrative text than those who are not taught by conventional strategy. This research was an experimental research with factorial design 2x2. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Talamau Pasaman Barat. The population of this research was eleventh grade social science students with total population of 40 students. The sample was taken by using total sampling; so all of population was taken as sample. XI IPS 2 was experimental class and XI IPS 1 as control class. The instruments of this research were reading comprehension test and questionnaire. The data was analyzed by two ways ANOVA (ANOVA 2x2). The results of this research are (1) Reading comprehension of students who are taught by conventional strategy is not better than reading comprehension of students who are not  taught by conventional strategy. Fo = 196.582 > Ft = 2.69, it means that Ha is rejected.

This study aimed to chart out the effects of teaching reading using Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy of Blachowicz and Ogle. This study employed quantitative method by having one pre-test and posttest research design, conducted at SMPN 2 Kejuruan Muda, Aceh Tamiang District, with a total sample of 26 students. The test was analyzed by using t-test.  The study revealed that there was an improvement from the pre-test to the posttest and that the teacher had implemented KWL strategy accordingly so that the students improved their reading comprehension skill. In addition, KWL is one of the basic strategies developed to know the extent of learners’ ability and the way they commit it on their own. Thus, the strategy itself has an effect to trigger the students to be autonomous learners. However, it is suggested that the teachers modify some steps in the KWL procedures to eventually motivate the students in learning reading.

This research investigated whether there was a significant difference on students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught using STAD and lecture method. The sample was the eighth-graders of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this research. The experimental group was taught using STAD while control group was taught using lecture method. A reading comprehension test as the instrument of collecting data was administered for both groups. Based on the research result using t-test, it was found that the t value was higher than t-table (2.39315 > 2.00) which means that there is a significant difference of achievement between the experimental group and control group. From these findings it can be interpreted that the use of STAD is more effective than lecture method in teaching reading comprehension for junior high school students. It is suggested for English teachers in Junior High School to use STAD in teaching reading since it is useful in improving students’ reading comprehension achievement. Keywords: reading comprehension, STAD

ABSTRACT In this classroom action research, the researcher used the model of classroom action research developed by Kemmis and Mc Taggart (1999). There are four steps of teaching. Before doing those four steps, the researcher did reconnaissance step by observing the class situation and interviewing the class teacher and the students to know the problems. After knowing the problems, the researcher started to do the four steps of teaching they were planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The findings of this result showed that teaching reading comprehension using collaborative strategic reading improved the students` reading comprehension skill. In the first cycle the result was not satisfactory.  The students were still passive in class because they did not understand about the method and many of them still found difficulty in understanding the texts. Their mean score of the first cycle was under the MMC. The criterion of success is when students give good response to this method, and also get the mean score that reach the MMC. After implementing the second cycle, the researcher found that the students were more enthusiastic because they knew about the topics of the texts and enjoyed comprehending the texts using CSR. They felt that the method was not boring. Besides that, the students` mean score was 72.85. The second cycle succeeded and proved that the students` mean score improved. It was above the MMC.

In teaching reading comprehension, teaching strategy and motivation influence students’ reading comprehension. Strategy which was used in this experimental research was Questioning strategy. Questioning strategy can be used as a variation of teaching strategy in teaching reading comprehension. The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of questioning strategy and students’ motivation toward reading comprehension of narrative text. The results of this research are (1) Reading comprehension of students who are taught by questioning strategy is better than reading comprehension of students who are taught by conventional strategy. Fo = 196.582 > Ft = 2.69, it means that Ha is accepted. (2) There is no interaction between strategy and students’ motivation toward reading comprehension. Fo = 0.012 < Ft = 2.69, it means that Ha is rejected. When no interaction is present it means that these two strategies did not influence each other so we do not need to continue for hypothesis 3 and hypothesis 4. In short; questioning strategy can be used as a teaching strategy in teaching reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Talamau Pasaman Barat. Other researchers are suggested to do futher research about questioning strategy dealing with of the skills.
