The Indian logistics industry is growing rapidly. It is the interchange of infrastructure, technology and new types of service providers that define whether the industry is able to help its customers reduce their logistics costs and provide effective services. Logistics services are the backbone of an economy, providing the efficient, cost effective flow of goods and services on which other commercial sectors are dependent. The logistics companies work as the outsourced or third party service providers (3PL) and support the organizations logistics functions. This study of business performance measurement of 3PL organizations or logistics outsourcing in Indian logistics industry explores the relationship between 3PL service providers and supply chain partners (both upstream and downstream). The researchers have made an attempt to determine the relationship on the basis of the performance variables such as Service Quality (SQ), Organisational Effectiveness (OE) and Relationship Management (RM) and there effect on the performance of the third party service provider(s).

The present Third Party Logistics (3PL) service providers in Malaysia and Thailand are expending their effectiveness and efficiency in several spheres from contemporary logistics services offers towards the series of value-added services to their customers. There is a need to forecast their key performance indicators growth using a systematic approach in resource management, as their quality indicators. Hence, this paper discovers on the current propensities of 3PLs service providers in respect of issues connected with their performance, resources and quality to establish on the 3PLs indicators of resources, quality and processes. It is also sought to develop a model of systematic dynamics for internal resources and company processes optimization based on the best practices. The methodology of the research is based on literature reviews which focusing on the performance measurement, quality and resources of 3PL. Using a System Dynamics, a model of optimization and management of 3PL, the internal processes and resources were developed. This model comprises of Nine (9) segmentations, which are operations, commercial activities, administration, personnel management, procurement, quality management, Resources, Performance Measurement and Financial models. The model is indicating all areas of activities of 3PL service providers. This study proposes a new model for Third-party Logistics (3PL) performance indicators for future guidelines in related industry.

The recent economic recession in Greece has had a detrimental impact on all national business activities, with the logistics industry being one of the most affected sectors primarily due to the significant decrease in market demand for goods and services. In this regard, the aim of this research is to identify key challenges and prospects for the Greek logistics services industry stemming from the recent economic crisis era through a critical literature taxonomy, a semantic analysis of the reviewed articles, and a questionnaire-based survey involving 140 executives from the third-party logistics sector. In principal, the recent economic crisis is reported to have significantly affected logistics service providers, thus further imposing structural reforms in the industry. The reduction in operating profits of transport companies is noticeable with the onset of the economic crisis, specifically in 2016. Nevertheless, logistics executives are optimistic regarding the near future, provided that educated and informed strategic management decisions are made and inventive business practices are embraced.

Blockchain technology has been applied to logistics tracking, but it is not cost-effective. The development of smart lockers has solved the problem of repeated distribution to improve logistics efficiency, thereby becoming a solution with convenience and privacy compared to the in-store purchase and pickup alternative. This study prioritized the key factors of smart lockers using a simulated annealing–genetic algorithm by fractional factorial design (FFD-SAGA) and grey relational analysis, and investigated the main users of smart lockers by grey multiple attribute decision analysis. The results show that the Web application programming interface (API) concatenation and money flow provider are the key success factors of smart lockers, and office workers are the main users of the lockers. Hence, how to better meet the needs of office workers will be an issue of concern for service providers.

<p>Having initiated economic liberalization in 1986, Vietnam is a particularly interesting emerging economy to study. The logistics industry in the country is developing strongly because manufacturers are willing to outsource their logistical activities to specialized businesses called logistics service providers (LSPs). To be sustainable partners of manufacturers, LSPs must adopt an informational integration policy that improves the functioning of their customers’ supply chains. To find out whether Vietnamese manufacturers value information integration, a questionnaire survey was administered to 139 food industry managers. The main research finding is that informational integration between manufacturer and LSP strongly impacts the manager’s perception of its own logistics performance. This result has major implications for foreign LSPs that want to carve out a significant place on the Vietnamese market.</p>

The study identifies the factors and measures the influence on the use of logistics services by seafood exporting enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City. Many research models on the same and relevant fields are reviewed to provide the comprehensive research background of the topic. Thereby, the research model and hypotheses are proposed with 26 observed variables for 05 factors of using logistics services. The survey is conducted in Ho Chi Minh City with 161 valid answers accepted for the analysis. After various statistical techniques to fully analyze data, the findings show that there is statistically significant relationship between all five factors and the use of logistics services by seafood exporting enterprises. Transportation time is the most influential factor, followed by reliability, cost, reputation and service quality. In accordance with these results, implications are proposed for both seafood exporting enterprises and logistics service providers to improve their operations and business performance. Despite the limitations during research process, the study has made a significant contribution to the literature of B2B buying relationship in the logistics industry.

Background: The establishment of a digital central supplier database (CSD) in the Limpopo provincial departments was envisaged not only to eliminate the duplication of service provider compliance requirements during procurement processes and payment processing but also to level the playing field amongst service providers so that small and upcoming businesses can have equal competitive bidding opportunities like any other business. This therefore meant that the CSD was to ensure that all registered suppliers have an equal and fair prospect of providing goods and services to government, and that acquiring of goods and services is done in a cost-effective manner. However, the Limpopo provincial departments are persistently underspending their allocated budgets at the end of each financial year.Aim: The aim of this study was to assess whether CSD as an electronic procurement (e-procurement) system adopted by the provincial departments in Limpopo is efficient and cost-effective in enhancing the provisioning of goods and services.Setting: The study focused on the Limpopo provincial departments, South Africa.Methods: The study used a qualitative research approach to assess the use of CSD in enabling e-procurement processes. Purposive sampling was employed to sample 14 participants from 12 provincial departments.Results: The outcome revealed that the technological innovation of centralising the suppliers’ records on the CSD increased transparency and accountability in the process of selecting suppliers who qualify to do business with government, and the system has the potential, if rightly used, to eliminate corrupt activities such as favouritism and collusion.Conclusion: The article concludes that the successful implementation of CSD by provincial departments and public entities may, amongst other things, improve supply chain management performance, particularly in the selection of suppliers, and may also promote economic development of small, medium and micro-enterprises.

The primary function of income security organisations is to administer personal injury claims in a commercially viable and cost effective manner, while supporting the receivers of benefits/claimants to achieve a meaningful and durable return to employment. Given the pressures of commercial success in a competitive market measured by effective cost minimisation, to what extent is the level of support offered to individuals claiming benefits impacted by an organisation's purpose to be profitable? The extent of influence exercised by income security organisations in administering claims and driving employment outcomes is limited by jurisdictional legislation and regulations. Furthermore, the requirements to meet compliance requirements can often be detrimental to the quality of management of claims, resulting in a highly administrated framework. This can restrict an organisations capacity to meet individual needs, especially in cases that are not seen as fitting the norm. Considering the conflicting demands imposed by commercial pressures and regulatory frameworks, what is the level of influence that may be exercised by these organisations in facilitating employment outcomes? Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify global trends in the third-party logistics (3PL) industry, and with that to find out where the opportunities and challenges lie, what the critical success factors are, and how companies can position themselves well in China. As there is currently very limited knowledge about the 3PL industry in China, this study also intends to shed light in this area. Design/methodology/approach – The study is conducted through focus group interviews with senior executives of leading 3PL companies in China followed by a survey with 70 logistics companies. Findings – The key strengths of the logistics industry in China include numerous factors such as good connectivity and new infrastructure, while its main weaknesses are a shortage of qualified staff and slow adoption of technologies. There are a number of concerns and issues raised, such as lack of qualified staff, oversupply of warehousing space in China, competition from the influx of foreign 3PL companies to China, and regulations on free trade zones, seaports and airports, all of which may have policy implications. Research limitations/implications – As most of the logistics companies in the study are located and dominating in the Eastern and Southern China, it may be useful to conduct similar study in the new emerging western and central regions of China for comparison. Practical implications – Managers and investors will appreciate the challenges and opportunities in logistics services in China and have a better insight into Chinese logistics development. Originality/value – While China has been viewed as a cost effective place for manufacturing, the logistical costs in China are still very high as compared to other developed countries. This research will highlight the key reasons for the high logistical cost in China.

Market segmentation is fundamental in marketing strategy and the first step of market-based strategy preparation, to strengthen its marketing efficiency, and creating opportunities for sales growth and profits. This also applies to market segmentation logistics service providers (TPL - Third Party Logistics), the market is highly developed in the last decade, so that the logistics service providers has to develop marketing strategies properly. The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of different industries that exist today and map the needs of the logistics services of TPL customers. Based on exploration research conducted, it can be found in conformities relating to the logistics industry from several companies, ie appropriateness to the complexity of logistics activities of some companies and degree of investment of TPL services company in conducting the activity. Logistics service provider market segmentation can be based on variable complexity of logistics activities, whether it is high, medium or low and variable degrees of investment in the company whether minor, major, or integrated/total. Companies in different industries can have the same logistic service requirements and companies in the same industry can have different logistic service requirements. Client companies for logistics service providers which product handling are classified as semi-complex is the most attractive customer segments for being penetrated. The industries are classified into this segment is automotive, food and beverage, animal food, ceramic, and plantation.

With the rise of competition and challenges for Logistics Service Providers (LSP) in Indonesia, competitiveness and sustainability are needed. The research explored the logistical process and identified the factors that built the competitiveness of LSP, such as Third-Party Logistics (3PL) in Indonesia. The research also identified the factors and relationships of their competitiveness and sustainability. The research methodology was explorative with the qualitative-observation approach. The applied sampling technique was purposive and snowball. The participants were 10 LSP operating in Indonesia: Kühne + Nagel, FedEx, Damco, DB Schenker, APL Logistics, Panalpina, Agility Logistics, TNT Express, Röhlig Logistic, and Rhenus Logistic. The data were unstructured interviews with 10 middle managers with the job position of leader and manager. Then, the data were analyzed using NVivo 10 software. The result is the recommendation of the competitiveness model for 3PL that the providers can apply to achieve its sustainability. Moreover, the factors that drive the competitiveness of LSP are price, service, people, and network. Meanwhile, innovation and credibility will improve competitiveness toward sustainability of 3PL. Based on the findings, it can offer opportunities for further research on the relationship and influence of these variables on other similar companies in other countries.
