Effect of spacing and fertilizer level on yield attributes of Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata)

A field experiment was conducted at Central Farm Unit situated in Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Killikulam during Rabi 2011-12 to evaluate the effect of spacing (120×30cm, 120×20 cm, 90×30 cm and 90×20 cm) and fertilizer levels (12.5:25:12.5, 18.75:37.5:18.75, 25:50:25, 31.25:62.5:31.25 kg N, P2O5, K2O/ha and control) on yield attributes of Dhaincha. The results revealed that spacing adopted with 120×30 cm significantly recorded higher number of pods/plant (53.7), pod length (19.94 cm), number of seeds/pod (28.52) and seed yield (585 kg/ha) of Dhaincha. In respect of different fertilizer levels, application NPK @ 31.25:62.5:31.25 kg/ha perceived higher yield attributes (number of pods/plant (48.8), pod length (17.98), number of seeds/ pod (29.28) and seed yield (609 kg/ha). Combination of spacing (120×30 cm) with fertilizer levels of 31.25:62.5:31.25 kg/ha significantly recorded higher seed yield of 705 kg/ha.

An experiment was carried-out with forty-eight hybrids of pigeonpea and two checks for nine characters at Agricultural Research Station, Tandur (Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University). Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the hybrids for all the nine characters studied. The results of genetic parameters revealed that, high genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic coefficients of variations (PCV) were observed for seed yield and number of pods per plant. Six characters viz., number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod length, test weight and seed yield exhibited high heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean which suggested that these traits were amenable for further improvement following simple selection methods. Character association revealed significant positive association of seed yield with plant height,number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and pod length. Based on divergence studies, the hybrids were grouped into nine clusters in Tocher’s method, cluster II (14 hybrids) was the largest followed by cluster I (13), cluster VI (9), cluster IV (6), cluster IX (4) and the remaining clusters were solitary (III, V, VII and VIII). Out of the nine characters studied, seed yield, days to 50% flowering, test weight and plant height contributed 85.62 per cent of the total divergence and these traits were found to be important factors for genetic differentiation in the hybrids. The overall results of the study revealed that, hybrids under cluster IV and VIII and cluster VII and VIII had maximum and minimum inter cluster distances respectively and possessing high genetic diversity for the characters viz. plant height, number of branches per plant, number of seeds per pod and yield.

Six concentrations each of KNap and NAA along with a control were tested on cowpea cv. Bari Falon- 2. Results showed that irrespective of treatment differences, dry matter of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) increased during 60 to 105 DAS. Concentrations above 50 ppm NAA increased plant height. The dry matter and yield increased with the increasing of the concentrations of KNap and NAA up to 1250 and 50 ppm, respectively. No significant differences of dry matter accumulation, grain yield and almost all the yield attributes were observed in between 1250 ppm KNap and 50 ppm NAA. The highest values of dry matter/plant (54.52 g), pod length (13.15 cm), number of pods/plant (10.29), number of seeds/pod (10.61), 1000 seed weight (122 g), seed yield/plant (15.51 g), seed yield/ha (1630 kg) and harvest index (37.32 %) were obtained due to application of 1250 ppm KNap. The study of the effect of three well known mutagens, ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS), methyl methane sulphonate (MMS) and gamma rays (GR) on the yield contributing traits of the urdbean variety TPU-4 were carried out in the M3 generation. Effect of selected mutagenic treatments/doses of EMS (0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 M), MMS (0.0025, 0.05 and 0.01 M) and (GR) (30, 40 and 50 KR) on different yield contributing traits like plant height, plant spread, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod, seed yield per plant and 100 seed weight were analyzed in the M3 populations of the variety TPU-4. Seeds of M2 plants and control were harvested separately and sown to raise M3 population.. Genetic variabilty in the mutagen administered M3 progeny of the urdbean variety TPU-4 was analyzed by employing statistical methods. Data on mean values and shift in the mean of seven quantitative traits was evaluated on individual plant basis. The experimental findings revealed that concentrations / dose of the all these mutagens showed inhibitory effect on plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length and number of seeds per pod. Lower concentrations of mutagens exerted a promotory effect on plant spread, 100 seed weight and seed yield per plant while higher concentrations of these mutagens inhibited them to different extent.

A field experiment was conducted at Regional Research Station (Punjab Agricultural University) Gurdaspur and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pathankot during the spring season of 2016, to determine the performance of kidney bean genotypes at different sowing dates under sub-mountainous conditions of Punjab. The two kidney bean genotypes i.e. red and speckled were evaluated for yield potential at two locations by adopting different sowing dates viz., 20th January, 1st February, 10th February and 20th February, 2016. The treatments were laid out in split plot design with four replications by keeping sowing dates in main plots and genotypes in sub plots. Among different dates of sowing, crop sown on 10th February showed superiority than other dates through higher emergence count per meter row length, plant height, branches per plant, pods per plant, seeds per pod, length of pod, biological yield and seed yield. The seed yield in February 10 sown crop was 66.4, 33.3 and 21.7 per cent higher than February 20, January 10 and February 1 sown crop, respectively at Gurdaspur. Similarly, at Pathankot, the percent increase in seed yield in February 10 sown crop was 36.0 and 7.2 per cent as compared to February 20 and February 1 sown crop, respectively. The kidney bean genotype speckled produced significantly higher yield attributes (seeds per pod, length of pod and 100 seed weight) and seed yield at both Gurdaspur and Pathankot (935.1 and 823.1 kg per ha, respectively) as compared to red genotype. Therefore, it can be concluded that to attain higher productivity of kidney beans, the speckled genotype could be used for cultivation by adopting February 10 as the optimum time of sowing in the sub-mountainous area of Punjab.

The present study entitled “Genetic diversity Studies in Field Pea Germplasm (Pisum sativum var. arvense L.)” was carried out to estimate the genetic variability for yield and yield contributing traits, study the relationship between yield and yield attributing traits on seed yield and its component traits and to assess direct and indirect of yield attributing traits on seed yield. The experimental material was consisting of 41 Field Pea genotypes. The experiment was laid out in Randomized complete block design with three replications. The observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants from each treatment and replication for 12 different quantitative traits Days to 50% flowering, Days to 50% pod setting, Plant height (cm), Number of branches per plant, Number of Pods per plant, Number of seeds per pod, Pod length (cm) days to maturity, biological yield (gm), Harvest Index, Seed Index (gm), Seed yield per plant (gm). Based on the mean performance, high seed yield per plant were identified for the genotype zimndal (11.59) followed by Matar-23 (10.76). The higher phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variations were observed for number of primary branches per plant (33.92 & 24.56), seed yield per plant (29.84 & 25.67) and number of seeds per pod (28.61 & 22.64). High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was observed for plant height (84.43 & 40.55), days to 50% flowering (77.30 & 34.92) and pod length (71.55 & 32.55). Based on Mahalanobis D2 values 41 genotypes grouped into 8 clusters. Among 8 clusters cluster I had more number of genotypes (25) followed by cluster II (8 genotypes), cluster VIII (3 genotypes). The maximum intra cluster distance was observed in cluster VIII (10.26) followed by cluster II (8.59) and cluster I (7.72). The highest inter cluster distance observed between cluster I and cluster VI (24.07) followed by cluster I and cluster IV (22.25), cluster I and cluster III (21.41). Therefore, genotypes present in these clusters may be used as parents to produce the transgressive segregants. The cluster IV (12.57) had significant and higher cluster mean for seed yield per plant. The trait number of primary branches per plant (25.12%) had maximum contribution towards to genetic divergence followed by harvest index (21.95%), biological yield per plant (19.39%), seed yield per plant (19.15%).

A field experiment was conducted comprising two varieties of mungbean, BARI Mung-5 (V1) and BARI Mung-6 (V2), and five levels of phosphorus fertilizer: triple super phosphate [Ca(H<sub>2</sub>PO<sub>4</sub>)] viz. T1 (control), T2 (42.5 kg P ha<sup>−1</sup>), T3 (85 kg P ha<sup>−1</sup>), T4 (127.5 kg P ha<sup>−1</sup>), and T5 (170 kg P ha<sup>−1</sup>). The experiment was organized in a randomized complete block design with three replications. V1 produced the highest number of pods per plant (7.65), whereas the maximum 1,000-seed weight (49 g) was produced by V2. The maximum plant height (30.89 cm), number of branches per plant (8.55), number of leaves per plant (19.05), number of pods per plant (10.25), pod length (8.95 cm), number of seeds per pod (9.11), 1,000-seed weight (48.17 g), and yield (1.05 t ha<sup>−1</sup>) were obtained from the T4 treatment. The interaction of phosphorus levels and varieties had a considerable effect on the growth, yield, and yield attributes of mungbean. The highest number of leaves (20.44) and number of pods (10.39) were obtained from V1 when 127.5 kg P ha<sup>−1</sup> (T4) was applied, whereas the maximum number of seeds per pod (9.25) and maximum pod length (9.09 cm) were obtained when  85 kg P ha<sup>−1</sup> and 42.5 kg P ha<sup>−1</sup>, respectively, were used. The highest number of branches per plant (8.87), 1,000-seed weight (52.83 g), and the maximum seed yield (1.14 t ha<sup>−1</sup>) were achieved from the treatment V2T4 owing to the interactive effect of phosphorus dose and mungbean variety.

A field experiment was undertaken to evaluate the performance of different weed control treatments in cluster bean during kharif, 2015 in RBD with three replications. Treatment of weed free check was found best by recording highest values of yield attributes, seed (20.97 q/ha), stover (65.68q/ha) with maximum weed control efficiency at successive stages. Among different herbicides treatments, Imazethapyr + Imazamox @ 40 g/ha (PoE) at 20 DAS showed highest values of yield attributes, seed yield (19.59 q/ ha), stover yield (63.83 q/ ha), WCE (91.84, at 60 DAS) and minimum WI (6.0). In monetary terms significantly highest net return (Rs.86883 /ha) were obtained from weed free check, followed by imazethapyr + imazamox @ 40 g/ha (PoE) at 20 DAS (Rs.85398 / ha) and imazethapyr @ 75 g/ha (PoE), at 20 DAS (84394 Rs./ha). The maximum B:C ratio of 6.57 was recorded with treatment imazethapyr @ 75 g/ha (PoE), followed by imazethapyr+ imazamox @ 40 g/ha (PoE) 6.37.

Field experiments were conducted at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore during August to February of 2011-12 and 2012-13 to study the effect of drip irrigation, fertigation levels and frequencies on seed yield and nutrient uptake of pigeonpea. Three fertilizer levels (75 %, 100 % and 125 % recommended dose fertilizer (RDF) through water soluble fertilizer and conventional fertilizers), three irrigation levels (50 % computed water requirement of crop (WRc), 75 % WRc and 100 % WRc) and surface irrigation (IW/CPE ratio 0.6 with 100 per cent RDF through conventional fertilizer) were included as treatments in this study. Application of 100 per cent of RDF (WSF) once in 7 days along with 100 % WRc (T9) recorded significantly higher uptake of total nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The lowest plant nutrient uptake was recorded by surface irrigation with application of 100 % RDF (T14) applied as basal. The results revealed that application of nutrients through fertigation once in seven days with 125 % RDF (WSF) + irrigation 100 % WRc recorded higher total nutrient uptake (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) than surface irrigation with conventional fertilizer.

A field experiment was conducted at Dr.P.D.K.V., Akola (M.S.) during 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. The experiment comprised of nine treatments involving 2.5 and 5t FYM ha-1, 1 and 2t sheep manure ha-1, 2 and 4t vermicompost ha-1, 25:50 and 12.5: 25 kg ha-1 NP through inorganic and control. Among different treatments, the application of 4t vermicompost ha-1 resulted in significantly increased pod yield (26.19 q ha-1), seed yield (17.62 q ha-1) and dry matter yield (46.68 q ha-1) as well as quality such as L-Dopa (3.63%), protein (26.79%) and test weight (111.69 g) of kawachbeej over control and superior over rest of treatments. The highest seed yield 184.04% and L-DOPA content 101.96% was observed with 4t vermicompost ha-1 over control. The similar trend of results was noticed in uptake of macro (N, P, K ,S) and micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu) of kawachbeej and it was at par with treatment 5t FYM ha-1 and 25:50 kg ha-1 NP through inorganic, respectively.

Field experiments were conducted in the Department of Seed Science and Technology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka during 2016-17. The field experiment consisted of 18 treatment combinations involving two seasons viz., kharif 2016 and rabi 2016-17 and plant growth regulators viz., G1: Control, G2 : GA3 @ 50 ppm, G3 : NAA @ 40 ppm, G4 : Cycocel @ 100 ppm, G5 : Mepiquat chloride @ 50 ppm, G6 : Nitrobenzene @ 200 ppm, G7: TIBA @ 50 ppm, G8 : Brassinosteroids @ 200 ppm, G9 : GA3 @ 5 ppm + IAA @ 5 ppm and experiment was laid out in Factorial RBD with three replications. The more number of pods per plant (117.19), number of seeds per pod (4.25), dry pod yield per plant (118.53 g), dry pod yield per plot (2.07 kg), seed yield per plant (114.48 g), pod length (5.66 cm), seed yield per plot (2.32 kg), seed yield per hectare (1,281 kg) was recorded in rabi season than kharif. Among the plant growth regulators more number of pods per plant (120.44), number of seeds per pod (4.44), dry pod yield per plant (120.17 g), dry pod yield per plot (2.21 kg), seed yield per plant (117.60 g), seed yield per plot (2.55 kg), seed yield per hectare (1,360 kg) and pod length (6.04 cm) was recorded in NAA @ 40 ppm, followed by nitrobenzene @ 200 ppm, (119.78, 4.35, 119.54, 2.11, 116.76, 2.42, 1,299 kg and 5.93 cm, respectively). The interaction effect was found to be non-significant for majority of the characters studied. However, foliar spray of NAA @ 40 ppm during rabi season recorded higher crop growth, seed yield and quality parameters as compared to control.
