Water spinach is a heavy metal accumulator plant if grown in polluted soils. This raises the concern of water spinach safety as one of the most consumed vegetables in Asian household. Land pollution in water spinach cultivation area can be caused by industrial activities that involve heavy metals such as tannery. Industrial waste such as chrome leaches to the water system that eventually will be used as irrigation source for agriculture. Organic fertilizer is a potential solution to increase water spinach growth, yield, and absorb heavy metal contaminants. This research evaluated the effect of type and dosage of organic fertilizer on water spinach that grown in chromium-polluted soils. This research design used Randomized Block Design (RBD) with nine treatments and three replication. The treatment of combination of types and dosages of organic fertilizer. There were dried leaves, goat manure, and vermicompost with dosage of 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1 and 15 t ha-1. The results of this research showed that the effect of combination of organic fertilizer type and dosages at chrome polluted media gave better effect on growth, and yield of water spinach. Giving vermicompost of 15 t ha-1 gaves better effect on plant height, fresh weight of plant, and dry weight of plant, meanwhile the doses of 5 t ha-1dried leaves showed the lowest chrome content compared to other treatments, but these plants are still unsafe for consumption due to high chrome content. Keywords: water spinach, organic fertilizer, chromium, yield

Abstract Carrot is an increasingly important root vegetable in Indonesia, and it is commonly served as cooked mixed-vegetables or consumed freshly as salads or juices. Therefore, development of eco-friendly cultivation technology, including in lowlands, is important to meet the increased demand. This research analysed growth and yield of carrot plant in lowland in response to foliar-organic-fertilization as well as characterized the quality, carotenoid and sugar contents as well as hardness of the taproot. A Randomized completely block design (an RCBD) experiments was conducted in Bagik Polak Village, Labuapi District of West Lombok Regency (at ca. 45 m above mean sea level/amsl) from June to October 2020. During the cource of the experiment, the carrot plants were treated with 6 concentration of foliar organic fertilizer, that were 0 ml/L (K0), 5 ml/L (K1), 10 ml/L (K2), 15 ml/L (K3), 20 ml/L (k4) dan 25 ml/L (K5). There was no chemical fertilization added to the plots, but chicken manure of 20 tons/ha was equally given to all treatments. Application of foliar organic fertilizer increased growth and yield of the carrot plant by increasing physiological responses of the carrot plant as shown by a decrease ratio of above to below ground biomass and increase in the leaf chlorophyll content. Interestingly, application of foliar organic fertilizer enhanced the sweetness, carotenoid contents of the carrot taproots compared to the control plants.

Extrusion cooking has beenused as an important technique for the manufacture and modification of widevariety of food products such as expanded snack foods, ready-to-eat cerealswhich are made from foods with high starch and protein. Although starchy foodsare the predominant structure forming agents, their utilization as food hasbeen limited by their poor protein quality and quantity. The supplementationwith legumes improves the essential amino acid content of the food. Bambaragroundnut has balanced amino acid content and can supplement the quality ofamino acids in sorghum. Starch from sorghum flour has been found to beresistant to extrusion. This makes the modification of functional propertiesvery difficult. Malting of the sorghum has been adopted for the modification ofthe starch quality. The nutrient and functional properties of food play majorrole in their application and use as food. This work has studied the effect offeed moisture (20%, 25%, and 30%) and barrel temperature (100o C,110OC and 130o C) on the chemical composition andfunctional properties of sorghum malt and Bambara groundnut blends. From theresults of the analyses, protein content varied from 11.07% to 11.75%. Increasein barrel temperature decreased the protein content while feed moistureincrease favoured the retention of proteins. The expansion index (EI), waterabsorption index (WAI) and effect of quantity of water on swell volume (EQWSV)varied from 1.88 to 3.88, 570% to 660% and 13.7 seconds to 33.4 secondsrespectively. These properties are negatively affected by increase in feedmoisture but they improve with increases in barrel temperature. The values forwater solubility index (WSI), bulk density and Wettability ranged from 2.2% to8.4%, 0.2g/cm3 to o.7g/cm3 and 14.3 seconds to 37.3seconds respectively. The increase in feed moisture has positive influence onthese parameters while temperature increased affected them negatively.

The aims of this study was to investigate the characteristics and physicochemical changes of vermicompost during composting of palm oil mill effluent (POME) sludge processed by epigeic earthworm (E. eugeniae) within 60 days. The value of macronutrients, micronutrients and heavy metals and pH in vermicompost comes out to be (pH8.3), carbon (C) (45.2%), CN ratio (18.1%), phosphorus (P) (5.02%), ferum (Fe) (0.6%), copper (Cu) (16.8 ppm), zink (Zn) (119.54 ppm), mangan (Mn) (1049.86 ppm), potassium (K) (0.81%), nitrogen (N) (2.5%), calcium (Ca) (11.42%) and magnesium (Mg) (2.99%), and was compared with compost from EFB-POME sludge and compost from mesocarp fiber-POME sludge. In addition, the amino acid content in vermicompost detected was very low as compared to raw POME. Meanwhile, three types of fungus were detected in vermicompost which are fromPaecilomycessp.,Fusariumsp. andPenicilliumsp. The results suggested that POME sludge could be recycled to form compost by using vermicomposting technology, as well as act as a good organic fertilizer.

Abstract A field experiment was conducted in the Amiriyat al-Fallujah district of the Anbar governorate to know the effect of the combination of sulfur and organic fertilizer on the growth and yield of onion, (a local red type), under different plant densities. The experiment included two factors, first: a combination of fertilizing with decomposing Cow’s manure (20 tons.ha-1) and sulfur (50 kg.ha-1), and this factor was distributed as follows (T0: fertilizer recommendation (NPK 100-100-120 kg.ha-1 It is considered a control). T1: cow waste + half of the chemical fertilizer recommendation and T2: fertilizer recommendation + sulfur addition and T3: Cow’s manure + half of the fertilizer recommendation + sulfur addition and T4: double the recommendation of cow manure (40 t.ha-1 + half of the fertilizer recommendation + adding sulfur). The second factor: planting distances (S1:10×10, S2:10×15, and S3:10×20) cm. The distance between plants was fixed 10 cm and the dimensions changed between one line and another. The study was carried out as a factorial experiment with the randomized complete block design (RCBD). The results showed clear significant differences for the two study factors in characteristics of vegetative growth, yield, and the content of total soluble solids, as the T4S3 treatment exceeded by giving it the highest number of tubular blades, leaf area and the highest percentage of sulfur in the leaves, which was positively reflected on the plant yield and percentage the total soluble solids amounted to (16.57 blades.plant-1, 15.97 dm2, 1.70%, 0.64%, 104.50 g, 15.83%), respectively, The treatment of planting distances S1 achieved significant differences in the total yield (90.39 tons.ha-1 and 8.91 kg) respectively compared to plants of treatment S3, which achieved(74.29 tons.ha-1and 5.39 kg).
