The uncertainties of the various social groups reunited here from 1808 on echoed in the absence of a single national project as much as in the discomfort of these people about the forms of government and society found and wanted here. Part of this movement happened by the effort to build a civilization suited to the current standards, hovering about the place of imported or domestic ideas. Several scholars - from different social origins and strata - sought a national project and ways to implement it. Part of this effort can be seen in the lives of Pierre (Seignot) Plancher and José Francisco Xavier Sigaud and in the publication of the Bibliotheca Constitucional do Cidadão Brasileiro collection between 1831 and 1832, which marks Plancher”™s return to France and the interruption of Sigaud”™s editorial activities. In the last several decades, the study of reading, writing, and publishing has emerged as a lively field of inquiry in the humanities and social sciences. Historians and literary scholars have engaged with a number of questions about the impact of changes in technology on reading practices and particularly on the relationship between new technologies of reading and writing and social, religious, and political change. The new field of the “history of the book,” merging aspects of social and intellectual history with the tools of analytical and descriptive bibliography, came to the fore in the second half of the twentieth century at the same time that the emergence of new forms of electronic media raised many questions for social scientists about the ways that technological change have affected aspects of human communication in our time. Meanwhile, while the field of book history emerged initially among early modernists interested in the impact of printing technology, the issues raised regarding authorship, publication, relations between orality and the written word, dissemination, and reception have enriched the study of earlier periods.

Abstract  This article approaches a figure, albeit somehow principal, rather overlooked by the history of historiography in Argentina: that of the Cordobese Ramón J. Cárcano (1860-1946). One is in front of a liberal historian that welds his intellectual and political intervention into a historiographic tradition founded in Buenos Aires, mixing simultaneously that practice, incidentally constant and systematic, in the times and moments of a classic course characteristic of an outstanding member of the political elite of liberal reformism, placing history in the heart of the power dispute.  The analysis proposed documents and interprets the effort of historiographic synthesis resolved by Cárcano, a realisation that projects the historiographic territory onto the plane of diplomatic and poltical history, and is ready to investigate, fundamentally, the links between Argentina and Brazil during a great part of the 19th century. Likewise, the intention is to arrive at the conceptualisation which the intellectual himself would make about History and his own historiography work in the Argentinian context with its respective references, retrieving later on his critics’ voices, to access the position of the Cordobese in the different levels of the intellectual and historiographic panorama in Argentina and Brazil from the end of the 19th century to the late thirties.  Key Words  Historiography, Liberalism, Diplomacy.

An impressive body of meticulous scholarship in the history of the book has led scholars to reject outmoded models of revolutionary change and technological determinism, and instead to explore themes of evolution and organic change. Similarly, the old unitary and Eurocentric book history is being supplanted by a series of parallel narratives where the focus is on human adaptation of new technologies to newly felt needs and fresh marketing opportunities. The article suggests that the study of book history is a way of thinking about how people have given material form to knowledge and stories. It highlights some particularly ambitious recent arguments, and emphasizes research, theory and pedagogy as the means to a wider understanding. Rather than being an academic discipline, book history is identified as an “interdiscipline,” an intellectual space where scholars practicing different disciplinary approaches and methodologies address the same capacious conceptual category.

Reading practices and tastes were transported to colonial Australia along with European colonists. Access to and circulation of books and newspapers in the colonies were subject to the vagaries of distance, travel, and transport, and these had a concomitant impact on reading patterns and access, as well as on the development of local writing and publishing. Trade routes, and the disjunction of inland versus sea routes, may have had some influence on localized reading and distribution. The early history of libraries and booksellers in the Australian colonies, publication patterns, and marketing give clues to reading patterns. Examining the reading accounts and movements of individual readers, and individual texts, provides further detail and context to the environment and situatedness of reading in the Australian colonies, as well as the impact of transport as an idea, and an influence on texts and reading.

The Bibliographic Records in Libraries' Searchable Online Public Access Catalogs (Opac) Have Recently Taken on a New Role as a source of bibliographic data that can be aggregated, shared, circulated, manipulated, transformed, studied, and interpreted. Scholars' new awareness of library catalogs not just as aids to locating books and other materials but as sources of bibliographic information that researchers can manipulate and transform has inspired new scholarship on the history of the catalog and a new focus on how the catalog, in both its analog and digital forms, shapes bibliographic knowledge. Our Early Novels Dataset (END) project, for example, uses methods from book history, library science, and literary studies to think about the shape and history of the bibliographic metadata in the library catalog. Our research group's collective experiments with bibliographic metadata ask what happens when we look at the library catalog record not just as a utilitarian aid for searching or as an object of critique, but also as a work in progress with a literary character of its own. We ask what we can learn from the shape given to bibliographic information by the earlier catalogers whose records our project inherited and on whose expertise we draw. We also ask how the familiar languages of the library catalog record and the controlled bibliographic description might help make new forms of knowledge about books. And we press on the inevitable and generative tension between the particular perspective of the library catalogers who transform specific copies of physical books into bibliographic data and the informational fields dictated by machine-readable cataloging (MARC) descriptive standards.
