Space configuration and learning comfort; a case study of Federal University of Technology Minna lecture halls

This research pursuit the objectives of testing and measuring the level of indoor environmental quality in the lecture theatres across the university; analysing the challenges of the learning component that affects the learning process and appraise the learning space configuration that best suits the learning process of the students in various lecture halls. This research employed empirical research method involving questionnaires and scientific measurement of the acoustic level, thermal comfort level, lighting and particulate matter 2.5, 1.0 and 10. The research results show that the various learning spaces have good orientation and are adequately ventilated. The thermal comfort of most of the lecture halls reduces in the afternoon. The furniture arrangement within the lecture spaces reduced the level of interaction amongst the students and between lecturers and students. Therefore, this paper recommends effective artificial cooling must be introduced in the afternoon and the ergonomics within the lecture halls must be made flexible. The adaptation of spaces to different usage typologies can be complex in heritage buildings. Facilities were initially planned for a specific type of use that, when changed, require additional measures to ensure a suitable indoor environment. Passive strategies—e.g., free cooling—are commonly used as an alternative without requiring equipment installation. However, its implementation often leads to unsatisfactory conditions. Therefore, it is important to clarify the main barriers to achieving thermal comfort in readapted historic buildings. The present work investigates the thermal comfort conditions reported by workers in office spaces of a historic building in the University of Coimbra. A monitoring campaign was carried out between May and September 2020 to assess indoor conditions’ quality. Due to the current pandemic of COVID-19, offices were not occupied at full capacity. A one-day evaluation of thermal comfort was made using a climate analyzer and six occupants were surveyed on 19 August 2020. The main results highlighted discomfort due to overheating of spaces. The causes were related to the combination of inadequate implementation of the free cooling actions and the building use. Furthermore, it was recommended the installation of HVAC systems in case of full capacity.

This study was done to investigate the relationship between indoor environmental quality and prevalence of Sick Building Syndrome in six small offices inPenangIsland. Indoor environmental quality measurement was conducted according to relevant standards. There are totally Sixty workers were selected to participate in an electronic questionnaire survey. Questionnaire was used to record the comfort level of respondents in the case studies and level of sick building syndrome faced by respondents. Through indoor environmental quality measurement, it is found that most of the offices facing the lighting and noise problem. The result from the questionnaire shows that in overall, the occupants satisfy with their working environment in term of indoor environmental quality although the result also shows the opinions of occupants on dissatisfaction on certain indoor environmental parameter according to case study. The study also found that most of the occupants feel drowsy and fatigue when they work within the offices. Besides, due to the difference of the indoor environmental quality of the buildings, the occupants are suffered from different symptoms of the sick building syndrome.

A well-lit learning space is crucial to ensure the comfort of its occupants, especially for an architecture student who spends long hours in a studio to design, sketch, draw and build prototypes. This paper presents the results from a study conducted on the illuminance level of the architecture studios in the city campus of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Malaysia that were once laboratories. Measurements had been done using the Lux meter. Illuminance contours were generated using SigmaPlot and Dialux software for all the five rooms and compared with the requirements stipulated in the Malaysian Standard, Australia/New Zealand Standard and Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) standard for a room with similar function. A survey was also conducted among undergraduate architecture students who were using the studios daily to gauge their perception on the lighting condition and comfort level. The outcome of this study can be considered for future architecture studio lighting design to improve the students’ learning experience.

This chapter deals with the use of Applets, which are examples of software applications, combined with a specific methodology of teaching, based on Paulo Freire’s education concepts. According to his methods, co-creation between its participants is fundamental for the effectiveness of learning process. In that way, to promote a cooperative learning, the Applet should have interactive features. The Chemistry course of Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, in which students take in the first semester of the first year of the engineering course, was the case study. First, a research with the teachers of the Chemical Engineering Department was carried out, to identify the main problems and difficulties teachers and students face. Then, a topic was selected to be explored with the Applet, which was developed and applied to a small group of students. To identify the success of this experiment a questionnaire was created and the results are presented in this chapter. Some conclusions were drawn and the interactive features of the Applet received a positive feedback.

Many careers services are realising the increasing importance of access to accurate information, and are further developing resource centres that clients can use to research their work and study options. When the Careers and Appointments Service at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) was re-established in early 1995, a career resource centre was created to support career counselling activities, and to give students access to a wide range of employer and occupational information. This case study outlines the tasks undertaken in setting up the centre, and reflects on issues involved.

Previous studies have shown that indoor environmental quality (IEQ) parameters may have a considerable effect on office employees’ comfort, health and performance. Therefore, we initiated a research program to help occupants identify IEQ parameters they perceive as risk factors for their health in an office and enhance their comfort levels in an office environment. Since we assumed that office employees might have different indoor environmental quality expectations related to their work area and that these differences could be measured, our objective was to develop an office ‘comfort map’ based on occupants’ individual IEQ preferences. Thus, the goal of the comfort map would be to help tailor office spaces to their occupants’ health and comfort expectations. The comfort survey was developed to assess the comfort-related opinions of the occupants, based on IEQ parameters (visual comfort, acoustic comfort, air quality and thermal comfort) of a chosen open-plan office building. The survey also assessed the degree to which the given IEQ parameter was considered a health risk factor by occupants or caused a negative comfort sensation for them. The survey was filled in by 216 occupants. The answers were then analyzed with the help of a frequency table depicting relative frequency. The measurements of IEQ parameters took place in an open-plan office in the chosen office building (a Hungarian subsidiary’s office building belonging to an international company in Budapest). The occupants had different opinions regarding the perceived effects of the IEQ parameters on their health and comfort. Almost two-thirds of the respondents (64.8%) were dissatisfied with the adjustability of the noises and sounds IEQ parameter at their workstation. Furthermore, half of the respondents (50.1%) were dissatisfied with the adjustability of ventilation. Most of the occupants (45.8%) considered noises and sounds as the IEQ parameter that had a negative effect on their health. There were also IEQ differences between different areas of the office space. Based on these results, a comfort map was developed for the office. The comfort map contains information about the IEQ characteristics of each workstation by depicting the thermal comfort, carbon dioxide, visual comfort and acoustic comfort characteristics of a given workstation on a relative scale. Based on the thermal, air, acoustic, and lighting differences between the workstations, occupants can select their preferred workstations when a desk-sharing system works. Although still in its pilot phase, the comfort map could increase the chances for office employees to find the workstation best suited to their IEQ expectations. This could improve occupants’ overall comfort level, which could in turn enhance occupants’ productivity and mental as well as physical health.

AbstrakPenelitian terhadap kenyamanan termal dengan studi kasus bangunan sekolah dasar negeri dan penggunanya sangat penting untuk dilakukan, karena dengan adanya penelitian ini, akan diketahui bagaimana kenyamanan termal siswa sekolah dasar negeri yang berada dalam ruang kelas di Sekolah Dasar Negeri 02 Ulujami Pagi, Jakarta. Sehingga untuk kedepannya dapat diberikan rekomendasi perbaikan mengenai gedung sekolah yang dirasa nyaman bagi para siswa/i sehingga dapat mendukung proses belajar yang lebih baik. Metode yang digunakan dalam penulisan ini adalah kuantitatif dengan meneliti  pada populasi dan sampel tertentu menggunakan instrument Thermometer, Thermo-Hygrometer, Anemometer, dan kuesioner. Hasil penelitian didapatkan suhu nyaman bagi siswa Sekolah Dasar Negeri 02 Ulujami Pagi, Jakarta adalah 30,20ºC suhu udara (Ta). sedangkan rentang suhu nyaman antara -0,5 dan +0,5, dicapai antara 28,80ºC sampai 31,60 ºC suhu udara (Ta).Kata Kunci: kenyamanan termal, suhu bangunan, sekolah dasar AbstractResearch on thermal comfort with a case study of public elementary school buildings and its users is very important to do, because with this study, it will be known how the thermal comfort of public elementary school students who are in the classroom at Ulujami Pagi 02 Elementary School, Jakarta. So that in the future it can be given recommendations for improvements to school buildings that are felt comfortable for students so that they can support a better learning process. The method used in this writing is quantitative by examining the population and certain samples using a Thermometer, Thermo-Hygrometer, Anemometer, and questionnaire. The results of the study obtained a comfortable temperature for students of the State Elementary School 02 Ulujami Pagi, Jakarta is 30.20ºC air temperature (Ta). while the comfortable temperature range is between -0.5 and +0.5, reached between 28.80ºC to 31.60ºC air temperature (Ta).Keywords: thermal comfort, building temperature, elementary school
