The goal of this study is to examine the views of academicians working in the preschool teaching department on the applicability of the distance education model in preschool education. The study was carried out in a ‘phenomenological’ pattern, which is a qualitative research pattern. The research group comprised eight academicians working in preschool teaching departments of state/foundation universities in Istanbul during the 2020–2021 academic period. The study results indicate that participants expressed more limitations than positive aspects of applying the distance education model in preschool education. It is observed that participants agree that children will face some limitations in socio-emotional development fields, but might be supported in the cognitive development field when the distance education model is applied in preschool education. It is also understood that participants do not have a common view on language development, motor development and self-care skills. Inner-service training for inexperienced teachers on distance education to inform them about distance education practices in preschool education is suggested.     Keywords: Preschool education, distance education, academician, child, opinions.

Problems in vulnerable families are multilayered and include the intersection of physical, psychosocial and other forms of distress. The multidimensional nature of the problems of these families is closely linked to the fact that there are many institutions in the field of education, social welfare, health care and others, in which treatment and support are not satisfactory or adapted to their needs. The article presents the partial results of a large-scale qualitative research study, results that refer to the position of vulnerable families in the context of preschool education. The study examined how vulnerability is experienced by parents of preschool children, how the expert workers in the preschools involved in the study responded to the parents’ vulnerability, and how they cooperated with experts from other services outside the preschool. A qualitative research method was used in the study. Data was collected partly through semi-structured interviews with various expert workers employed in two preschools, as well as with the parents of children in the preschools; the interviews were conducted individually and in focus groups. Using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006), we have identified four representative themes: amongst parents, the two recurring themes can be subsumed under the headings “from door to door” and “adaptation/flexibility”, and amongst experts, under the headings “powerlessness/incompetence/lack of information” and “power/innovation/sensitivity”. The study finds that the ability to effectively contend with vulnerability presumes a reconceptualisation of the attitude of institutional preschool education towards the family, including a change in the professional role of preschool teachers.

AbstractThe Research Program on Fundamentals of Distance Education of UNED Costa Rica proposes an analytical model for the generation of comparative studies among open, online and distance education universities and institutions. This model is intended to satisfy a historical and methodological vacuum identified in comparative studies that are usually limited to the mere descriptions of educational contexts and situations. The comparative studies proposed by this model, on the other hand, are thought to be developed by professionals assembled in flexible networks and to promote the exchange of information about the ways in which open, online and distance education universities confront and resolve their situational conflicts and how these universities project their work. This model for comparative studies is designed to be open, adaptable to specific requirements of researchers, and to strengthen and promote the improvement of the distance education model of UNED Costa Rica. Keywords: Distance learning, Online education, Open education, Comparative educology, Comparative studies, Professional networking

This article examines the implications of adopting a discovery learning education model for distance education students in a first-year undergraduate journalism subject. It reviews subject enhancement strategies against learning theory and analyzes the ways students are engaged with subject content and assessment. Results of subject redesign included increased student satisfaction, greater retention and higher grades despite the increase in overall assessment requirements. It demonstrates that discovery learning based on group work and social engagement can be adopted in a distance education environment with positive outcomes. This article maps how a subject designed initially to align with a cognitivist/behaviourist model progressed to adopting a social constructivist approach. It concludes with a discussion of the issues associated with that transition.

Abstract This study aimed at investigating the perceptions of children attending preschool education about protecting the environment through drawings. This study was carried out with a qualitative research method. The study group of this study consisted of 80 children among 48-60-month-old children attending preschool education in Nicosia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). In this study, the children were requested to explain their thoughts through drawings by asking the following question: “What can be done to protect the environment?” Then, the children were asked to describe their drawings orally. The descriptions of children were recorded in writing and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the most common perception about protecting the environment was “not littering”. In addition to this, it was determined that the children had different perceptions as “not wasting water”, “not polluting nature”, “not starting a fire”, “not polluting the sea”, and “not cutting the trees”. It was concluded that the children had a perception of protecting the environment only from these aspects with the drawings that included reduce and respect dimensions of the 7R model. It was also concluded that they did not have a perception in the dimensions of reuse, rethink, reflect, recycle, and redistribute.
