Woodcarving motifs can be influenced by various aspects, including religions and beliefs. Malaysia is known for its cultural diversity and is rich with traditional heritage. Malay is one of the major ethnic groups in Malaysia and is considered as the majority of the country's population, contributing to the significant heritage, including art, decoration, and even architecture. Traditional woodcarving is an intricate Malay heritage and is the symbol of Malay art. A study on Malay woodcarvings is critically needed in order to know the influence that occurs on the selection of the motifs. It is such a waste to see our woodcarving heritage destroyed unappreciated and undocumented, especially on Johor woodcarvings, as many studies in other states have done. More and more traditional Johor Malay houses are being demolished day by day before we know the historical influence on the existence. The objective of this paper was to identify the woodcarving motifs found in Johor Malay houses and to identify their influence. Site visits were conducted in which the woodcarvings of 50 houses were examined, photographed, and documented. Interviews were also conducted with the house owners and the woodcarvers. The samples were analyzed, and the results were verified by experts. The results show that floral motifs lead the statistic, and the pumpkin motif, known as 'labu maya', takes the highest percentage of the overall motifs. It is concluded that the Islamic religion is the biggest influence that contributes to the findings. The findings also show that the 'labu maya' motif is the identity of the Johor woodcarving motifs. It is hoped that this study can bring recognition to Johor woodcarvings, and contribute valuable guides for woodcarvers to apply these motif typologies into their future works to sustain and cherish the Johor local identity.

The main purpose of the article is to identify the features of the sociological study of «folk» Islam. The article shows the differences between sociological approaches to the study of this phenomenon from ethnographic, historical and philosophical ones. The analysis of the concepts of «folk» Islam, mass religious consciousness, religiosity of ordinary believers, religiousness of the population shows that they are not identical and have independent significance for the researcher. The text of the article shows the differences in the meaning of these concepts. The author, basing on the data of sociological surveys, interprets the features of «folk» Islam, which are not identical to the "normative", bookish Islam. This kind of attitude of religious people, not being fully consistent with the principles of the "normative" Islam, creates a positive predisposition in the sphere of mass religious consciousness to tolerant attitude toward representatives of different cultures and worldviews. The opinion polls also showed that there are some components of pagan beliefs in the religious consciousness of followers of "folk" Islam. Data comparison of opinion polls by ethnic groups suggests that «folk» Islam among representatives of different ethnic groups of the Republic of Daghestan does not have principle differences from the general Daghestan indicators of such kind. Sociological surveys show that, despite some inconsistency regards the provisions of the "normative" Islam, in "folk" Islam, the basic values of the Islamic religion are understood and preserved in accordance with universal human values. The study shows that "folk" Islam has a high adaptive potential to the conditions of globalization processes. This adaptation, as a rule, does not correspond to Islamic normativity.

Societies nowadays face the challenge of defining their identities when their cultural composition is more and more diverse. Old parameters which linked themselves to a definition based on a heritage of a tradition and a culture shared by a community is not viable today. Quebequois society nowadays, especially in the region of Montreal, has a profile constructed day by day due to people who have resided there for many generations, the newly arrived, and the shared experiences among them in work environment and public places. The particular case of the province of Quebec is quite revealing of the most characteristic traces of the cultural dynamics generated by the presence of ethnic groups of diverse origins that interact in the same space.

This chapter presents the results of a research study on the photographs used in a sample of foreign language coursebooks (FLC). The study aimed to determine to what extent the pictures are representative of the different types of diversity that constitute our societies. A corpus of 699 pictures taken from a selection of FLC of English and Italian was created. On the whole, the analysis showed that, while cultural diversity is widely present in the FLC, other types of diversity, such as disability or the LGBT community, are mostly neglected. The results of the study are relevant for researchers and publishers interested in inclusive textbook design, as it highlights the relevance of pictures in FLC not only as an aesthetic and pedagogical support, but also as visual representations of diversity as a value in our society.

The existence of a large body of literature in the Tyneside and Northumbrian dialects, dating from the late 18th century and continuing to the present day, testifies to a strong and enduring sense of regional identity closely associated with an acute sense of the differences between these dialects and Standard English/RP. Although much of this literature is conservative in nature and conservationist in intent, more recent examples in the local and popular press attempt to represent the salient features of the modern urban dialect (Geordie). This article examines extracts from a selection of texts, dating from George (Geordie) Ridley’s The Blaydon Races (1862) to cartoons in the Newcastle local newspaper, The Evening Chronicle(1996-7) and from Viz comic (1998). In the texts examined, semi-phonetic spelling is used to represent features of the Geordie accent. This article demonstrates that, whilst some features of the traditional dialect have been dropped by the more recent writers, others, such as the monophthongal/u:/in words such as ‘ town’, ‘brown’, spelt <toon, broon> are retained, notably in lexical items having referents which are closely bound up with local identity. Features found only in 20th-century texts often indicate very localized shibboleths, distinguishing Geordies from ‘Makkems’ (citizens of Sunderland, about 15 miles south-east of Newcastle).Recent sociolinguistic research points to a tendency for supra-local norms to replace the more traditional forms indicated by the spellings in dialect literature. This article argues that the prominence of local forms in dialect literature may represent an assertion of local identity in the face of the perceived threat of cultural and linguistic homogenization.

Dalam sudut pandang agama Islam berdasarkan analisis yang telah kami lakukan, menghasilkan kesimpulan bahwa praktik jual beli saham syari’ah di PT Phintraco Securities sudah sesuai dengan apa yang dijadikan standar baik menurut Alqur’an, Alhadits, Ijma’ para ‘ulama maupun undang-undang yang berlaku di IndonesiaKata Kunci : Praktik Jual Beli Saham Syari’ah, Saham Syari’ah, Hukum Islam   AbstractShariah shares as an Islamic financial instrument is a new product in the world of Islamic economics.
