A professional course like engineering strives to get maximum number of its students placed through campus interviews. While communication skills have been added in all the engineering courses with the aim to improve their performance in placement, the syllabus mostly concentrates on the development of four language skills. The students are not made aware of the employability skills and their significance. the increasing competition makes it imperative that apart from a regular degree certain skills are required by engineers. Industries while advertising for various posts even mention essential skills required along with the essential qualification. However skills and the significance of skills while applying for jobs or while facing interviews is a topic which is rarely given consideration while preparing for job interviews or while entering the job market. This paper intends to enlist the importance of skills and why students need to be aware of the skills they possess and how they can work on packaging their candidature around a few skills. Different profession requires different skills and if students identify their skills or acquire certain skills they can unquestionably have an added advantage in the interview and placement. Hence, this paper intends to enlist the skills, the importance of skills, ways to create awareness of individual skills specifically in engineering students who will step into the industry in near future.

Universities in Malaysia are facing challenges producing engineering graduates with the right skills to enter the demanding job market. Most employers have high expectations and emphasis on employability skills among engineering graduates. Limited evidence is available to help understand level and effect of leadership competencies among engineering students. In contrast, the Western and European countries had long measured leadership competencies in the context of engineering students. Quantitative data was collected from 346 engineering students using structured survey. This paper discussed the demographic and data analysis for leadership competencies construct. The results could be helpful in guiding institutions and educators for further researches to extend the instrument presented.

The discourse of employability revolves around the mitigation of mismatch between educational outcomes and the job market demand. This discourse is pertinent in engineering education as it is dedicated to producing human resources with the required employability skills. In this context, the students - to whom employability is transformed - are in the central focus. Their perceptions about their abilities in demonstrating and performing in the world of work require attention to connect education and their work. Considering this, the level of perceived employability of the engineering students studying in their final year was measured by using a self-constructed scale in a representative sample of 314 students of Kathmandu valley. The finding shows that the graduating students’ perceived employability was not consolidated and optimised to reflect on their behaviour and practices. It is at the level of ‘emergence’ and ‘presence’, which is thus not enough to see in their abilities to perform better. Therefore, the students were not able to perform as per the expectation of the market. The key implication of this study is that the gap of work-study transition stipulated to be minimised for the employability of the graduates with their exposure in the world of work.

It is of utmost importance that universities seek out creative ways to enhance the written and oral communication skills of their engineering students. Too many engineering students graduate and enter today’s competitive job market without sufficient communication skills that will ultimately give them an edge in their profession. It takes hard work and perseverance to obtain a four-year engineering degree, yet many talented students may be overlooked due to inadequate communication skills. Although a student may be more than qualified for an engineering position, a lack of written and oral communication skills could have a negative impact on his or her perceived level of skill. Employers today are searching for well-rounded individuals who are capable of performing multiple job tasks. They demand engineers who are not only technically astute, but who can also conduct research and effectively communicate their ideas to others. This paper examines the importance of written and oral communication skills in engineering professions. Additionally, it investigates various methods of teaching written and oral communication skills to many engineering students, including mechanical engineering, in higher education. It also describes the methods employed by the authors to enhance the communication skills of engineering technology students at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). Top priority should be given to see that students are able to live up to the highest standards both academically and professionally. It is time that universities empowered their students with the additional skills necessary to survive and flourish in today’s competitive and demanding job market.

The objective of this paper is to document the experience of developing and implementing a second-year course in an engineering professional spine that was developed in a first-tier research university and relies on project-based core courses. The main objective of this spine is to develop the students’ cognitive and employability skills that will allow them to stand out from the crowd of other engineering graduates. The spine was developed and delivered for the first time in the academic year 2010-2011 for first-year general engineering students. In the year 2011-2012, those students joined different programs, and accordingly the second-year course was tailored to align with the different programs’ learning outcomes. This paper discusses the development and implementation of the course in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department.

Employers often consider graduates to be unprepared for employment and lacking in vocational skills. A common demand from them is that the curriculum should include ‘communication skills’, as specific skills in their own right and also because of the central role that such skills can play in developing other desirable attributes. Current thinking in communication has indicated a split between communication apprehension and communication development. There are indications that techniques designed to develop communication skills will not resolve communication apprehension and that, if an individual has a high level of communication apprehension, these techniques will not result in improved communication performance. This paper compares and contrasts the levels and profiles of communication apprehension exhibited by accounting and engineering students. The implications of the findings are then discussed and the need for further research in the area of vocational choice is identified.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the Malay language learning tool called PETAH to improve its communication skills. Learning aids are among the important elements to improve one's language skills, especially for second or foreign speakers. Past studies conducted by researchers like Fa'izah et.al (2010), Khuzaiton (2012) and others have proven that there are issues of communication among speakers of languages other than English in the non-Malays in Malaysia. Based on these issues, the main objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the use of PETAH learning aids on improving the communication skills of students who use it. This study uses a quantitative research method that uses a questionnaire containing 25 items aimed at the effectiveness of the use of PETAH learning aids. This questionnaire instrument was used to get feedback from respondents after they used PETAH learning aids. Data from the questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS version 21. The results showed that the majority of respondents (mean values ranging from 3.35 to 4.71) agree that PETAH learning tools have improved their effectiveness in communication Malay language, especially if used continuously. In conclusion, a learning tool PETAH has a good impact on the improvement of communication skills of Malay language among non-Malays speakers in Malaysia.

English language teaching for the engineering students in under-develop colleges of rural location encounters challenges of resources. Even the task of imparting necessary language skills becomes difficult with the help of traditional classrooms. The syllabuses for professional courses are designed to comprehend the language skill to cop-up with the entire degree course and face the placement process towards the end of the course. Hence, the paper would be discussing the solution to the problem of the lack of facilities in teaching language to the professional undergraduates in under-develop colleges. It would also bring out the scope of discovering beyond basic software programs on the computer like Grammarly and Ginger, instead discusses the implication of new literacies in learning a language in the classroom of professional college.

Whether engineering students should be taught English and the communication skills in separate classes is a problem that has plagued teachers for many years. The author thinks that no distinction should be made between English for engineers and English for other students. The Kitzhaber Report is cited as an argument for anti-separatism and is set off against the views of the separatists. More specific statements are examined through the evaluation of a currently used anthology of technical and professional writing.
