From time to time, Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) continues to grow, including BIPA at the State University of Surabaya (Unesa). It cannot be denied that in its journey, BIPA Unesa encountered various problems. One of them is a report from a foreign student who was confused when he first arrived in Surabaya. Their confusion includes finding the ideal place to live, using online motorcycle taxi applications, and using public facilities such as markets, hospitals, and police stations. Not only that, but the understanding of academic rules on campus has also not been able to be conveyed on target. Some local students and lecturers have helped, but the limited number and time have made it impossible to assist students. Therefore, this research focuses on making a pocketbook called "survival book" in five different languages for foreign students. The benefits of this research are expected to be able to solve the concerns of BIPA students when they first come to Surabaya with the development of a pocketbook. This research belongs to the category of product development. With this research, it is hoped that it will produce an output in the form of a survival book for BIPA Unesa students as well as scientific articles that will be published in accredited national journals.

The article deals with the linguistic and methodological aspects related to teaching foreign students Russian as a foreign language at an advanced level by the example of working with the texts by A. I. Solzhenitsyn. Literary texts of the writer abound in individual author units created according to an unknown or familiar model. It is emphasized that the complexity of teaching Russian to foreign speakers based on the texts by A. I. Solzhenitsyn is caused by the need for the teacher to fully master the subtleties of the style of A. I. Solzhenitsyn. The linguistic aspect of this article allows us to get into the specifics of the structural composition of the individual author’s constructions of A. I. Solzhenitsyn. Within the methodological aspect, such words with a changed spelling or a changed semantic nature expand the horizons of a foreign student, increasing not only the level of Russian language proficiency, but also the cultural level in general, giving a foreign student greater opportunities not only to communicate with the student audience and teachers, but also to better understand all the connotative signs of a communicative situation. We found that when creating individual author units, there is a certain step-by-step approach, which can be used as a basis for developing a number of teaching methods that reflect the fact of step-by-step conceptualization in the minds of foreign students of significant features of the mentality of Russian native speakers.

(Title: Gender Representation in The BIPA Textbook).  This article aims to describe the gender representation in the Indonesian language for foreign speakers (BIPA) textbook. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data were textual words and pictures that showing gender identity. Data were collected from BIPA textbook called Let's Speak Indonesian: Ayo Berbahasa Indonesia 1, which is well known as Ayo 1. Data gathered by reading the textbook, marking, classifying, and calculating gender identity markers. By using gender identity as the parameter, data were analyzed by reducing, presenting, calculating the percentage of gender identity representations, interpreting and explaining the representation of the gender. The findings revealed that the representation of female gender in the Ayo 1 textbook has a greater percentage than male gender where female’s identities are more highlighted than male identities. Thus, it is concluded that based on the percentage of visual gender, the Ayo 1 textbook represented the gender equality because it’s reflects less domination of male over female. This empirical evidence suggests that future BIPA textbook designers need to be aware of the importance of gender representation issues in developing BIPA textbook. Keywords: BIPA textbook, gender identity, gender representation

The significance of language as a science in the educational sector has continued to play a critical role in terms of teaching and learning. However, due to inequalities exposed severely by the Covid-19 pandemic, the teaching of English as the second language acquisition to foreign speakers; is adversely affected. Therefore, the use of transformative methodology as the teaching strategy is explored to determine the most suitable methodology of teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study utilizes Participatory Action Research as the approach to explore the efficacy of transformative methodology; this approach is embedded in the paradigmatic principles of constructivism as the lens of qualitative methodology.  Besides, the data is analysed using Critical Discourse Analysis post the generation of it using observations and semi-structured interviews (free attitudinal interviews). The paper demonstrates the prospects of using transformative methodology as the appropriate use of pedagogical strategy for English as the second language acquisition, it also suggests efficient but costly measures required to be implemented by the universities for the use of the transformative methodology.

Previous research has already demonstrated that even very young children are sensitive to language cues and learn differently from native and foreign speaker models. A possible explanation for this phenomenon suggests that spoken language is a sign of someone's cultural background and in this sense demonstrates the person's culture specific knowledge. The aim of the present study was to investigate what children think about native and foreign speakers' behavior in a domain that is typically regulated by cultural norms (tool usage), specifically whether they expect group members to act alike or not. In a violation of expectation paradigm, two-year-old toddlers first watched a video on which a native and a foreign speaker person used different tools for achieving the same goal. In the test phase a new native speaker model appeared and selected one of the previously seen tools for the same goal as it was used before. Results indicated that toddlers were surprised if the native speaker model had chosen the tool that had previously been used by the foreign speaker. In Experiment 2, the familiarization phase was exactly the same as in Experiment 1, but during the test phase, the model spoke a foreign language. Results, in this case, showed no significant differences between looking times. These experiments suggest that two-year-olds expect native (but not foreign) speakers to use the same tool for the same goals. As tool usage is a fundamental element of cultural knowledge, we propose that this pattern of results suggest that children expect native speakers to possess shared cultural knowledge at least in the domain of artifacts.

This article reveals the essence of teaching the disciplines of the natural science cycle in English in high school. When preparing for the lesson, there is a need for careful selection of educational material, the teacher thinks out a specific algorithm for working with the text in a foreign language using subject terminology, while not forgetting the basic grammatical and syntactic models characteristic of the English language. In such a language environment, foreign speakers actively acquire solid knowledge, eliminating language difficulties in professionally-oriented lessons. Given this problem, we decided to create a methodological guide for teachers, which will contain tasks for formative assessment in physics lessons in English. Its lexical and grammatical material meets the requirements for mastering the English language (B1) in educational and cognitive activities. The presented progress tests also meet all the requirements of the corresponding stage of training of non-native speakers and help to consolidate the skills of professionally oriented communication. The purpose is to reveal some principles that should be taken into account when preparing assignments for physics lessons in English, as well as to provide a methodological guide for teachers. This article shows several principles that are most effective when conducting lessons. All the data of the article was confirmed by a computer survey of students, the answers were analyzed and collected for publication. Given the results we have presented, secondary school teachers can improve the quality of the material provided, as well as spend less time preparing for lessons. Physics is one of the fundamental sciences that can combine both the subject content and the language component. Here we present various methods of subject- language integration to improve communication skills. Thus, the preparation and conduct of physics lessons in English requires a strict and careful selection of educational material and takes into account the educational profile of secondary school students.

Presenting Indonesian text written by combining cultural elements for student learning materials of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) provides many benefits. Apart from being a stimulation to enrich vocabulary, material that contains cultural elements is also a means to promote Indonesian culture. By considering the learning needs of BIPA students who must include local cultural learning, the presentation of this reading text can be done incidentally or directly by using an extensive reading model. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers choose  a material that  integrates cultural elements since it beneficial for  BIPA students to learn interesting and authentic principles. In this article, data is drawn from various previous studies which include compilation of intercultural based texts, BIPA learning models, and various types of extensive reading models. The data is processed descriptively to be able to generate new ideas about the preparation of teaching materials as expected to support the teaching and learning process in BIPA classes.
