Recommendations for Preservice Training in Cognitive Disabilities: Perceptions of Practicing Rehabilitation Counselors

Given an increased prevalence of cognitive disabilities in the United States, and federal legislation aimed to reduce employment disparities among individuals with cognitive disabilities, a greater emphasis on this population is needed in rehabilitation counselor education (RCE) programs. A total of 33 graduates of a Cognitive Disabilities Certificate program were asked to offer recommendations for future training of Master's-level rehabilitation counseling students in the area of cognitive disabilities. A phenomenological approach was applied, using the constant comparative method for data analysis. Analysis resulted in four emergent themes. Participants recommended pedagogical approaches to incorporate cognitive disability-related issues into RCE curriculum; specialized training on cognitive disabilities should be required; and specialized training in other disability populations was also recommended. Lastly, participants discussed the need to provide specialized training on sub-populations such as autism, military veterans, and persons with co-occurring psychiatric and cognitive disabilities. Implications for pedagogy and research are provided.

This study examined the effect of rehabilitation counseling students’ age, sex, disability status, geographic location, marital status, religion, sexual orientation, and level of sexuality training on knowledge, comfort, approach, and attitudes toward the sexuality of people with disabilities. Participants were 312 rehabilitation counseling master’s students in Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) accredited programs all over the United States. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) analyses demonstrated that Knowledge scores were affected by intensity of training. Other subscale scores indicated that rehabilitation counseling students had generally negative attitudes toward sex and disability and low levels of comfort with approaches from clients. Results demonstrate the importance of rehabilitation counselor educators incorporating the topic of sex and disability in training programs so that graduating students have the knowledge and comfort necessary to discus sex with their clients with disabilities.

PurposeFocused instruction in cognitive disabilities addresses a need for training with populations growing in prevalence and public awareness in the United States. This is especially relevant in rehabilitation counseling given the poor employment outcomes found among persons with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and acquired brain injury. This study focused on the perceived career impacts of participation in a Cognitive Disabilities Certificate (CDC) specialization program.MethodA total of 33 graduates of a CDC program were asked to reflect on the career impacts of their specialized training in cognitive disabilities. Results were examined through phenomenological qualitative data analysis.ResultsFindings suggest participants had specific motivations for joining the CDC. Participants were able to achieve the goals set forth when applying such as skill development and expanding career options. Participants were able to achieve career outcomes they directly attributed to their CDC training.ConclusionsProviding students with an opportunity to specialize in an area of professional and personal interest not only enhanced their rehabilitation counseling training, it benefited their careers and clients. Implications for rehabilitation counselor education are discussed.

The professional status and future of rehabilitation counseling, as a profession, has been enhanced through the certification of rehabilitation counselors. Since July, 1974, the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification has certified more than 8,000 individuals in the profession. These professionals are located throughout the United States, its territories, and three foreign countries. Beginning in July, 1975, extensive demographic information was collected on each applicant resulting in a composite profile on slightly over 50% of the Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC's) certified during the “grandpersoning” period.

This case study of the cultural identity of bilingual adults aims to discover the changes in the self-identification of sequential Russian-English bilingual adults that occur as a result of the immersion in the second language and culture. The study strives to answer the question of the change in self-identification of bilingual adults and the way they perceive those changes as well as the role that language plays in the transformation of identity. The participants of the study are Russian-born graduate students pursuing their graduate studies at the Universities in the United States. The data for this qualitative study were gathered through oral semi-structured interviews and samples of participants' writing and analyzed using the constant comparative method. The research findings show that the participants of the study are situated on a various levels of the construction of hybrid identities. Among the factors that influenced that transformation of identity, the most were the loss of network and connections and the differences between American and Russian cultures. Additionally, language as a factor in the change of self-identification affects the identity when individuals temporarily lose the ability to communicate and then learn new communication strategies that involve a system of both languages based on the principles of efficient communication.

ABSTRACT   The objective of this study was to look at the phenomenon of participant’s efforts in preparation for the National Diploma III Midwifery National competency test. The National Competency Test is an effort to measure the final result in the form of an outcome as a standard for measuring the knowledge, skills, and behavior of students in health institutions. This research used a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. Data collection using the Snowball Sampling technique and collected using in-depth interviews conducted in a semi-structure. Data analysis refers to the constant comparative method and reliability is believed using triangulation. The results of the study revealed that all parties agreed with the policy of holding a national competency test but the participants opposed being carried out as an exit exam. The preparation that the exam participants did to face the Diploma III Midwifery National competency test used 3 methods, they were the private institution tutoring program, Self Directed Learning, and Institutional Guidance.   Keywords: National Competency Test; Midwife Competency Test; Midwifery Diploma; Exam Preparation. ABSTRAK   Penelitian bertujuan melihat fenomena upaya persiapan peserta mempersiapkan diri menghadapi uji kompetensi nasional DIII Kebidanan. Uji Kompetensi Nasional adalah suatu upaya pengukuran hasil akhir berupa outcome sebagai standar untuk mengukur pengetahuan, keterampilan dan perilaku peserta didik pada institusi bidang kesehatan. Desain penelitian adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik Snowball Sampling dan dikumpulkan dengan cara wawancara mendalam yang dilakukan secara semistruktur (Semistructure Interview). Analisis data mengacu pada constant comparative method dan kreabilitas diyakini dengan cara triangulasi. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa semua pihak setuju dengan kebijakan diadakan uji kompetensi nasional tetapi peserta ujian menentang dilaksanakan sebagai exit exam. Persiapan yang peserta ujian lakukan untuk menghadapi uji kompetensi nasional DIII Kebidanan menggunakan Tiga metode yaitu mengikuti program lembaga swasta bimbingan belajar, Self Directed Learning dan Bimbingan Institusi.   Kata kunci: Uji Kompetensi Nasional, Ukom Bidan, DIII Kebidanan, Persiapan Peserta Ujian.

Recent years have evidenced an increased interest in developing theoretical models of supervision and empirically analyzing the supervisory process. The major theme underlying these efforts concerns the supervisory contexts - including style and relationships - which are most effective for trainees with varying needs and at different levels of experience. With the availability of models and instrumentation unique to supervision, it is now possible to more critically look at the perceptions of students and their respective supervisors regarding how supervision occurs. This study examines the current theoretical models of supervision, considers the linkages between the theoretical models and assessment instrumentation which has been developed, applies the models and rating scales toa sample of matched pairs of rehabilitation counseling students and their respective supervisors, and proposes applications for analyzing and improving supervision in rehabilitation counselor education.

Purpose: To examine the experiences of international rehabilitation counseling graduates who had returned to their home countries or had moved to other countries to work. The study focused on their perceptions of the effectiveness of the training they had received in the United States.Method: A qualitative methodology was used to conduct the study. There were 5 participants interviewed, and data from interviews were analyzed and coded.Results: 6 themes emerged from data analysis: (a) lack of training programs in home countries, (b) support received from faculty members, (c) level of satisfaction with curriculum, (d) classroom experiences, (e) opportunities offered by the training program, and (f) difficulties applying the U.S. training to other countries.Conclusion: The study indicated that the participants had varied perceptions about the effectiveness of the training they had received in the United States. Implications for training international rehabilitation counseling students are discussed.

This research study explores the experience of first-generation immigrants of Mexican origin living in Denver, CO. Seven Mexican immigrants described their experiences through an in-depth interview process. The data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. The process described by the participants reflects ambivalence about living in the United States. This ambivalence stems from a conflict between their beliefs that the United States is the land of opportunity and their experiences of being unable to access opportunities because of their identity as immigrants—regardless of immigration status.

Technology has been shown to enhance daily activities, increase participation in individualized planning and supports, and accommodate the transition needs of students with disabilities. This study examined the benefits and challenges regarding technology use when providing transition services for youth and families receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Specifically, it explored the nuances of employing technology to encourage engagement in Wisconsin Promoting the Readiness of Minors in Supplemental Security Income (WI PROMISE) services and foster communication between counselors and participants. This qualitative study used a constant comparative method for analyzing data collected through two focus groups of WI PROMISE counselors. Counselors identified technology as essential to maintaining contact with WI PROMISE participants as well as extant barriers including inconsistent access to the internet, financial expense, and insufficient training and support. Recommendations for using technology to communicate with transition-aged youth and their families will be discussed.

In order to curb increasing youth electronic cigarette (e-cig) use, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the sale of flavored cartridge/pod-based products in February 2020. This mixed-methods study aimed to evaluate the impact of the FDA ban on adult JUUL users. The samples of current adult JUUL users were surveyed via Amazon Mechanical Turk at three time-points n = 76 (Sample 1); n = 128 (Sample 2); n = 86 (Sample 3) before and after the FDA flavored/pod ban. The participants were asked to report the JUUL flavored pod used most often and answer questions on purchasing generic pods or refilling (Quantitative). JUUL users were then interviewed in order to explore their perceptions and behaviors related to the FDA ban of flavored cartridge/pod-based products (Qualitative; n = 16). Quantitative data analysis evaluated the differences in variables by time-point. Qualitative data were coded into themes while using the constant comparative method. We found a significant decrease in the use of mint pods (43.4%, 22.7%, 16.3%) (p < 0.01), while there was a significant increase in the use of menthol pods (6.6%, 26.6%, 37.2%) (p < 0.01). Themes that emerged from the qualitative data included switching from mint to menthol pods, refilling pods, and switching to other products that are available in the desired flavors, such as generic pods or disposable e-cigs. Future research is needed in order to evaluate the impact of these behaviors on public health.
