Plusieurs pays africains ont adhéré au Réseau Africain de Géoparc (AGN) et ont entrepris de nombreuses études sur le géopatrimoine suite aux investigations menées par cette organisation pour promouvoir les richesses naturelles des pays africains. Les falaises de Fresco, premiers sites identifiés en Côte d’Ivoire, sont connues pour leurs richesses géologiques et écologiques. Ainsi, une étude bibliographique approfondie et complétée par l’analyse des données géologiques sur l’ensemble de ces affleurements ont permis de faire l’inventaire des éléments de valeur des falaises et de les évaluer sur le plan scientifique. L’évaluation de ces géosites (ensemble des cinq falaises) a livré une valeur moyenne de 0,7/1 et a ainsi confirmé leur importance en tant que géosites potentiels. L’environnement naturel aux alentours des falaises renferme une riche biodiversité de végétation littorale abritant de nombreuses espèces animales dont certaines sont en voie de disparition. Cette étude aura permis d’évaluer les falaises comme élément important de la géodiversité pouvant favoriser la promotion du géotourisme et contribuer au développement socio-économique de la région de Fresco. Several African countries have joined the African Geopark Network (AGN) and have undertaken numerous studies on geoheritage following the investigations carried out by this organization to promote the natural resources of African countries. The Fresco escarpments, the first site identified in Côte d’Ivoire, are known for their geologic and biologic wealth. Thus, an in-depth bibliographical study completed by the analysis of geological data made it possible to make an inventory of the elements of geodiversity of the five escarpments and to evaluate their scientific value. The evaluation of these geosites (all five cliffs) yielded an average of 0.7/1; and confirmed their importance as potential geosites. The natural environment around the cliffs contains a rich biodiversity of coastal vegetation, home to many animal species that some of them are endangered. This study will have made it possible to assess the cliffs as an important element of geodiversity that can allow the promotion of geotourism and contribute to the socio-economic development of the Fresco region.

The article presents a new view on the problems of political stability in West African countries. For the first time was carried out a comparative analysis of the sustainability of the political systems of the two Francophone fastest growing countries in West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal. The author analyzes the factors negatively influencing political stability social order, and those that reduce conflict potencial in these States. Internal and external threats to the political systems of Senegal and Сôte d’Ivoire are examined. The response of both countries to internal and external challenges is shown. The study proves that while external threats indanger Senegal’s political stability, such as the penetration of religious extremism, the crisis in Casamance, maritime piracy, drug traffic, for Côte d’Ivoire, on the contrary, main risks are internal: electoral, socio-political crises, the split of elites, arms smuggling, banditry. The study demonstrates that the level of social governance in Senegal is higher than in other West African countries, including Сôte d’Ivoire, due to the dualism of the political system: the coexistence of Western-style political institutions with local faiths (tariqas), as well as policy pursued by President M. Sall. aimed at achieving mutual compromise that ensure the peaceful settlement of conflicts and contradictions. The author concludes that a new approach to the development of a security strategy is required.

This paper empirically examined the broad money demand function and its stability in two West African countries namely Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana covering the period of 1980 to 2015 using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds testing procedure. The empirical results confirm the stability of the money demand function and support the choice of M2 as a viable instrument for policy implementation in both countries cited above. The study also demonstrates that a long-run relationship exists between money aggregate (M2) and its determinants during the study period. In fact, the real income tends to be the most significant factor explaining the demand for broad money in both countries. In addition, the overall short run estimation of our model is statistically significant for Cote d’Ivoire and insignificant for Ghana at the conventional level. This means that money demand is stable for Cote d’Ivoire in short run and unstable for Ghana in the same period. It is recommended that monetary policy authorities should continue to implement policies that will reinforce macroeconomic stability and facilitate economic growth.

AbstractCan married or cohabitating women in patriarchal societies, who are often disproportionately affected by STI/HIV infections, negotiate protective sex when perceived necessary by refusing sex or asking for condom use during sex? Protective sex negotiation was examined through measures of power relations related to whether or not a woman has a say in sexual activities within marriage. The study hypothesis was that women who are more able to refuse sex or ask for condom use before sexual intercourse will be more able to discuss and reach agreement with their spouses on protective sex practices when needed. The study used data from DHS surveys conducted in Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to predict women’s ability to negotiate protective sex in Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria. The findings show that moderately high percentages of women in both countries reported the ability to negotiate protective sex, with a higher percentage reporting the ability to refuse sex compared with the ability to ask partners to use a condom. The logistic regression results showed that, in the two countries, women’s ability to refuse sex or ask their partners to use a condom, varied by gender- and power-mediating factors, women’s characteristics and behavioural factors. The study draws attention to the need to intensify efforts to promote more-egalitarian relationships between partners through culturally appropriate interventions.

Dans le but de contribuer à la sauvegarde des savoirs médicaux ancestraux et à la valorisation de la médecine traditionnelle, cent vingt tradipraticiens du département de Gagnoa ont été soumis à des entretiens semi-structurés portant sur les procédés nomenclaturaux des plantes médicinales employées dans le traitement des troubles gastroentérologiques. Ainsi, cinquante et une plantes médicinales ont été inventoriées et reparties en 47 genres et 24 familles d’Angiospermes avec une prépondérance des Fabaceae et des Lamiaceae regroupant chacune 13,73% des espèces recensées. Ces plantes portent des appellations en langues locales ivoiriennes. Quarante-cinq espèces portent des noms en langue autochtone Bété représentant 88,24% des espèces recensées. Seulement neuf d’entre elles sont désignées par des noms ayant un sens. Leurs significations se rapportent soit à leur milieu de vie, soit à leur utilité ou à leur aspect ou encore font référence à des animaux. Cette étude revêt un intérêt pour les pays africains, en particulier la Côte d’Ivoire où le savoir ancestral se perd au fil du temps avec l’abandon d’un certain nombre de valeurs culturelles.   order to contribute to the preservation of ancestral medical knowledge and the promotion of traditional medicine, one hundred and twenty tradipraticians of the department of Gagnoa were subjected to semantic interviews structured on the nomenclatural processes of medicinal plants used in the treatment of gastroenterological disorders. Thus, fifty-one medicinal plants were inventoried and divided into 47 genera and 24 families of Angiosperms with a preponderance of Fabaceae and Lamiaceae, each comprising 13.73% of the species surveyed. These plants have names in local Ivorian languages. Forty-five species have native Bété names representing 88.24% of the species surveyed. Only nine are referred to as names with meaning. Their meanings refer either to their environment, their usefulness or their appearance, or to animals. This study is of interest to African countries, in particular Côte d'Ivoire, where traditional knowledge is lost over time with the abandonment of certain cultural values

The genetic and phenotypic diversity of Côte d'Ivoire Ralstonia solanacearum strains was assessed on a 168-strain collection sampled on Solanaceae both in the southern lowlands and western highlands. Phylotypes I, II, and III were prevalent, though at unexpected frequencies. Phylotype I strains (87.5%) were genetically diverse and overrepresented in all agroecological areas, including highlands (AEZ III). Phylotype II strains (10.7%) only belonged to one tropical lowland-adapted broad host range lineage (IIA-35), whereas no highland-adapted potato brown rot (IIB-1) or Moko strains were detected. African phylotype III strains were rare (1.8%). They originated from a single Burkina Faso lineage (III-23) and were only found in lowlands. Three phylotype I strains were found harboring pRSC35, a plasmid identified in phylotype III strains in Cameroon. From pathogenicity tests performed on commercial varieties and tomato/eggplant/pepper references, the virulence diversity observed was high, with five pathoprofiles described. Eggplant accessions MM152 and EG203 and tomato HW7996 displayed the largest resistance spectrum and highest level. Two highly virulent phylotype I strains were able to bypass resistance of HW7996 and the eggplant reference AG91-25. Collectively, these points lead to the conclusion that the situation in Côte d'Ivoire is specific towards other African countries, and specifically from the Cameroon reference, and that within phylotype I can exist a high virulence diversity. This calls for similar studies in neighboring West African countries, linking R. solanacearum pathogen genetic diversity to strain virulence at the regional level, for the rationalization of regional resistance deployment strategies and future resistance durability studies.

The democratisation process which began in the early 1990s in many sub-Saharan African countries has led to renewed interest in the role of voluntary associations in the shaping of the political and social realms. This article maintains that the most effective way to understand the role of associational politics and developments in Africa is not by postulating what they should do according to Western democratic theory, but through an historical analysis of how associations functioned before the introduction of multi-party competitive elections and putative democratic rules in recent years. In this way it will be possible to attain a richer and more complex under-standing of state–society relations under one-party and military regimes, and thus of how these links are likely to change in a more pluralistic environment. This article explores these issues in the Côte d'Ivoire.

Tuberculosis (TB) is responsible for a high mortality rate (2.5%) worldwide, mainly in developing countries with a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The emergence of multiresistant strains of TB poses an extreme risk for TB outbreaks and highlights the need for global TB control strategies. Among Western African countries, Côte d’Ivoire (CI) represents a specific example of a country with great potential to prevent TB. Specifically, CI has a promising healthcare system for monitoring diseases, including vaccination programs. However, military and political conflict in CI favors the spread of infectious diseases, TB being among the most devastating. Compilation of the studies identifying common causes of TB would be extremely beneficial for the development of treatment and prevention strategies. Therefore, the purpose of this comprehensive review is to evaluate the epidemiology of TB in CI, describe the factors involved in pathogenesis, and suggest simple and applicable prevention strategies.

This paper undertakes a comparative analysis of the situation of the pastoral Fulbe in the two neighbouring West African countries of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. The migration of the Fulbe into the northern parts of both countries is quite a recent phenomenon. In spite of the similar social, economic and environmental conditions in both countries, the two governments responded differently to Fulbe migrations. Generally, the Ivorian government was more receptive of the Fulbe while the Ghanaian authorities have been hostile to them. The paper also discusses interethnic relations between the Fulbe and the indigenous farming groups. Finally, responses of both governments to farmer–herder conflicts are examined and some general reflections on how West African states are dealing with the issue of pastoral migration are provided.

Statistical analysis of a borehole database, linear discharges, and water strikes processing enabled an understanding of the structure, geometry and hydrodynamic properties of the metamorphic hard rock aquifers from the Montagnes District, Western Côte d’Ivoire. The database comprises 1654 boreholes among which 445 only were usable for this research work after its pre-processing. Analysis shows that the structure of the aquifer is similar to that observed in several other areas in the world: it developed due to weathering processes, comprises the capacitive saprolite, 10–20 m thick on average, and an underlying transmissive fractured layer, overlying the unweathered impermeable hard rock. The fractured layer is 80 m thick, the first 40 to 45 metres being its most productive zone, with a 11.3 m3/h median productivity. This research shows that metamorphic aquifers exhibit similar aquifer properties (thickness, hydrodynamic parameters) as plutonic ones and that there is interest in using such databases for research and other purposes. However, a rigorous pre-treatment of the data is mandatory, and geological data from published maps must be used instead of the geological data from the database. A previous methodology aiming at processing the boreholes’ linear discharges was improved. It notably appears that the slope method must be preferred to the percentile method.
