This chapter provides a brief review of the existing resampling methods for RSS and its implementation to construct a bootstrap confidence interval for the mean parameter. The authors present a brief comparison of these existing methods in terms of their flexibility and consistency. To construct the bootstrap confidence interval, three methods are adopted, namely, bootstrap percentile method, bias-corrected and accelerated method, and method based on monotone transformation along with normal approximation. Usually, for the second method, the accelerated constant is computed by employing the jackknife method. The authors discuss an analytical expression for the accelerated constant, which results in reducing the computational burden of this bias-corrected and accelerated bootstrap method. The usefulness of the proposed methods is further illustrated by analyzing real-life data on shrubs.

Heterogeneity in meat food groups hinders interpretation of research regarding meat intake and chronic disease risk. Our objective was to investigate how heterogeneity in red meat (RM) and poultry food groups influences US population intake estimates. Based on a prior systematic review, we created an ontology of methods used to estimate RM [1= unprocessed RM; 2 (reference)= unprocessed RM + processed RM; 3= unprocessed RM + processed RM + processed poultry; and 4=unprocessed RM + processed RM + processed poultry + chicken patties/nuggets/tenders (PNT)] and three for poultry [A=unprocessed poultry; B= unprocessed poultry + PNT; C (reference)= unprocessed poultry + processed poultry + PNT). We applied methods to 2015–18 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data to estimate RM and poultry intake prevalence and amount. We estimated and compared intakes within RM and within poultry methods via the NCI Method for individuals ≥2 years old (n = 15,038), adjusted for age, sex, and race/Hispanic origin. We compared the population percentage that exceeded age- and sex-specific RM and poultry allotments from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommended eating patterns. The percent that consumed RM ranged from 47 ± 1.2% to 75 ± 0.8% across methods and mean amount ranged from 10.5 ± 0.28 to 18.2 ± 0.35 lean oz-equivalents/week; 38 ± 1.2% to 71 ± 0.7% and 9.8 ± 0.35 to 13.3 ± 0.35 lean oz-equivalents/week across poultry methods. Estimates for higher, but not lower, intake percentiles differed across RM methods. Compared to the reference, Method 1 was ≥3.0 oz-equivalents/week lower from 20th-70th percentiles, ≥6.0 oz-equivalents/week lower from 75th-90th percentiles, and ≥9.0 oz-equivalents/week lower for the 95th percentile. Method 4, but not Method 3, was ≥3.0 oz-equivalents/week higher than the reference from 50 to 95th percentiles. The population percentage that exceeded allotments was 27 ± 1.8% lower for Method 1, 9 ± 0.8% higher for Method 3, and 14 ± 0.9% higher for Method 4 compared to the reference. Differences were less pronounced for poultry. Our analysis quantifies the magnitude of bias introduced by heterogeneous meat food group methodology. Explicit descriptions of meat food groups are important for development of dietary recommendations to ensure that research studies are compared appropriately.

Aim: We explored the concentrations of urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in healthy adults in the Jiangsu region in Eastern China and established a reference interval using latex-enhanced immunoturbidimetry to provide important guidelines for the interpretation and application of urinary NGAL in clinical practice. Methods: In total, 1970 eligible subjects from four regions were included in this study. The urinary NGAL levels were measured using an AU5800 automatic biochemical analyzer with its matched reagents. The urinary NGAL reference interval was established using the one-sided percentile method (95th percentile). Results: The urinary NGAL data were non-normally distributed. The urinary NGAL levels were not significantly different by sex or age. Therefore, the urinary NGAL reference interval in healthy adults in the Jiangsu region in Eastern China was <87.5 ng/ml (95th percentile of the upper limit). Conclusion: Urinary NGAL reference interval will play an important role in promoting the clinical value of urinary NGAL.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to determine the impact of community-based and driven approaches during the lockdowns and early periods of the pandemic. The study examines the impact and perceptions of the state-led intervention. This would help to discover a better approach for postpandemic interventions and policy responses.Design/methodology/approachThis article used the inductive method and gathered its data from surveys. In search of global opinions on COVID-19 responses received in communities, two countries in each continent with high COVID-19 infection per 100,000 during the peak period were chosen for study. In total, 13 community workers, leaders and members per continent were sampled. The simple percentile method was chosen for analysis. The simple interpretation was used to discuss the results.FindingsThe study showed that poor publicity of community-based interventions affected awareness and fame as most were mistaken for government interventions. The study found that most respondents preferred state interventions but preferred many communities or local assessments of projects and interventions while the projects were ongoing to adjust the project and intervention as they progressed. However, many preferred community-based and driven interventions.Research limitations/implicationsState secrecy and perceived opposition oppression limited data sourcing for this study in countries where state interventions are performed in secret and oppression of perceived opposition voices limited data collection in some countries. Thus, last-minute changes were made to gather data from countries on the same continent. An intercontinental study requires data from more countries, which would require more time and resources. This study was affected by access to locals in remote areas where raw data would have benefited the study.Practical implicationsThe absence of data from the two most populous countries due to government censorship limits access to over a third of the global population, as they make up 2.8 out of 7 billion.Social implicationsThe choice of two countries in each continent is representational enough, yet the absence of data from the two most populous countries creates a social identity gap.Originality/valueThe survey collected unique and genuine data and presents novel results. Thus, this study provides an important contribution to the literature on the subject. There is a need for maximum support for community-based interventions and projects as well as global data collection on community-based or driven interventions and projects.

Statistical analysis of a borehole database, linear discharges, and water strikes processing enabled an understanding of the structure, geometry and hydrodynamic properties of the metamorphic hard rock aquifers from the Montagnes District, Western Côte d’Ivoire. The database comprises 1654 boreholes among which 445 only were usable for this research work after its pre-processing. Analysis shows that the structure of the aquifer is similar to that observed in several other areas in the world: it developed due to weathering processes, comprises the capacitive saprolite, 10–20 m thick on average, and an underlying transmissive fractured layer, overlying the unweathered impermeable hard rock. The fractured layer is 80 m thick, the first 40 to 45 metres being its most productive zone, with a 11.3 m3/h median productivity. This research shows that metamorphic aquifers exhibit similar aquifer properties (thickness, hydrodynamic parameters) as plutonic ones and that there is interest in using such databases for research and other purposes. However, a rigorous pre-treatment of the data is mandatory, and geological data from published maps must be used instead of the geological data from the database. A previous methodology aiming at processing the boreholes’ linear discharges was improved. It notably appears that the slope method must be preferred to the percentile method.

The influence of three Saharan dust events (SDE) on particulate matter (PM) concentrations and aerosol optical properties (AOP) during February 2021 was studied. The physical characteristics of the African aerosol were different for each episode. Therefore, the impacts of the three events on PM and AOP were analyzed separately. The monitoring sites were placed in Elche, in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The sites can be classified as urban background locations. The procedure used to obtain the contribution of SDE to PM10 mass concentrations was the 40th percentile method. Nearly half of the days during the study period were under the influence of Saharan air masses. The average contribution of mineral dust (MD) to the PM10 mean concentration was ~50%, which was the highest contribution during the month of February in the last 14 years. The results show that those events characterized by a high input of fine particles (PM1 and PM2.5) caused larger increases in the absorption (σap) and scattering (σsp) coefficients than SDE in which coarse particles predominated. Nevertheless, as expected, SAE (Scattering Angström Exponent) values were lowest during these episodes. AAE (Absorption Angström Exponent) values during SDE were slightly higher than those observed in the absence of African dust, suggesting some contribution from MD to the absorption process.

Measurement of N‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels has been shown to have clinical significance for diagnosis and management of heart disease in dogs. Evaluation of current reference limits for specific breeds is necessary to ensure the test can accurately distinguish between healthy and diseased animals. The objective of this study is to evaluate the adequacy of currently established NT-proBNP reference limits for clinical use in healthy Salukis. Cardiac health of 33 clinically healthy Salukis was evaluated via echocardiography using available breed standards. Plasma concentrations of NT-proBNP were measured using a commercially available assay. A one-sided 97.5% upper reference limit for the NT-proBNP concentrations was calculated using non-parametric percentile method. The 97.5% upper reference limit was 769 pmol/L (90% CI, 547-1214 pmol/L) for the study dogs. This upper reference limit was within the currently established non-breed specific NT-proBNP upper reference limit of 900 pmol/L. No relationship between sex, age, or body weight on plasma levels of NT-proBNP was noted. Results of this study supports the use of currently available non-breed specific NT-proBNP cut-off values for clinical evaluation of healthy Salukis.

For thyroid function estimation and clinical decision making, use of appropriate reference intervals for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4) and free triiodothyronine (fT3) is crucial. For each laboratory, establishment of own reference intervals is advised. For the first Slovenian estimation of reference intervals for thyroid hormones a large group of 1722 healthy individuals without thyroid disease was established retrospectively. Hormone analyses were performed on automated analyser Advia Centaur XP Immunoassay System (Siemens Healthineers), which reference intervals for TSH, fT4 and fT3 were 0.55–4.78 mIU/L, 11.5–22.7 pmol/L, and 3.5–6.5 pmol/L, respectively. Statistical analysis followed non-parametric percentile method. Our laboratory reference intervals for TSH, fT4 and fT3 are mostly narrower than intervals given by manufacturer. Median value, lower and upper limit for TSH, fT4 and fT3 were 1.98 (0.59–4.23) mIU/L, 14.5 (11.3–18.8) pmol/L and 4.82 (3.79–6.05) pmol/L, respectively. Most likely, an inclusion of a high number of healthy individuals without thyroid disease was a reason for such results.

The article focuses on the inference of stress-strength reliability in generalized Pareto model using the generalized variable approach and bootstrap percentile method. Simulation studies are conducted to obtain expected lengths and coverage probabilities of confidence intervals constructed using the generalized variable and the bootstrap percentile methods. An example consisting of real stress-strength data is also presented for illustrative purposes.

Decision-making in breeding increasingly depends on the ability to capture and predict crop responses to changing environmental factors. Advances in crop modeling as well as high-throughput field phenotyping (HTFP) hold promise to provide such insights. Processing HTFP data is an interdisciplinary task that requires broad knowledge on experimental design, measurement techniques, feature extraction, dynamic trait modeling, and prediction of genotypic values using statistical models. To get an overview of sources of variations in HTFP, we develop a general plot-level model for repeated measurements. Based on this model, we propose a seamless stage-wise process that allows to carry on estimated means and variances from stage to stage and approximates the gold standard of a single-stage analysis. The process builds on the extraction of three intermediate trait categories; (1) timing of key stages, (2) quantities at defined time points or periods, and (3) dose-response curves. In a first stage, these intermediate traits are extracted from low-level traits' time series (e.g., canopy height) using P-splines and the quarter of maximum elongation rate method (QMER), as well as final height percentiles. In a second and third stage, extracted traits are further processed using a stage-wise linear mixed model analysis. Using a wheat canopy growth simulation to generate canopy height time series, we demonstrate the suitability of the stage-wise process for traits of the first two above-mentioned categories. Results indicate that, for the first stage, the P-spline/QMER method was more robust than the percentile method. In the subsequent two-stage linear mixed model processing, weighting the second and third stage with error variance estimates from the previous stages improved the root mean squared error. We conclude that processing phenomics data in stages represents a feasible approach if using appropriate weighting through all stages. P-splines in combination with the QMER method are suitable tools to extract timing of key stages and quantities at defined time points from HTFP data.
