The pupoposes of this study were (1) to find out the realizations of politeness strategies of disagreement by the sixth semester students of English Education students of Islamic State University in Sumatera, and (2) to figure out the most common types of politeness strategy used by them. The study employed qualitative research. The data were taken through a written test and Discourse Completion Test (DCT). The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling method which consisted of 12 male students and 12 female students. The study revealed that female and male English language learners experienced four types of politeness strategy: positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on-record politeness, and off-record politeness with negative politeness as the most frequent strategy used by female and male English language learners. The result of the study showed that negative politeness was dominant politeness strategy which had value of 63,33%. The second place was bald-on-record (23,33%), the third place was positive politeness  (11,67%), and the last one was off-record (1,67%). The conclusion of this study indicated that in expressing politeness strategy for disagreement, both female and male respondents tended to perform negative politeness strategy.

Abstract The approximation of the pragmatic knowledge of English language learners to native speakers has been a realm of concern for the scholars and researchers in applied linguistics. Thus, this research was an endeavor to figure out the association between the proficiency level and politeness strategies and external/internal modifications in written communication skills in the speech act of requests in Iranian English language learners. To this end, a written Discourse Completion Test (DCT), adapted from Rose (1994), including 8 situations was administered to elicit data from Iran Language Institute120 female and male EFL learners, 60 upper-intermediate and 60 intermediate. The data were sorted out using Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies taxonomy (Brown and Levinson 1987) and external/internal modifications developed by Faerch and Kasper (1989). The written request utterances provided by each participant were analyzed in terms of frequency and types of politeness strategies, namely, positive, negative, bald on record, and off-record as well as external/internal modifications utilized in requests. The Pearson Chi-Square test results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between upper-intermediate and intermediate learners’ type of politeness strategies and external/internal modifications.

The dual-role of the students of English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty Muria Kudus University as both English language learners and language users gets them to be autonomous, effective, efficient, and strategic readers. The objective of this research is to investigate the relationship between quality of the reading strategy and academic achievement of the students. The subjects of this research were 104 students of EED UMK comprising of all semesters taken randomly. The instrument used was closed-ended questionnaire. The result of this research reveals that there is no relationship between quality of the reading strategy and academic achievement, meaning that the quality of reading strategy does not influence the academic achievement of the students. Implikasions and recommendations for the institution and for further research were proposed.

This recent investigation aims to find out whether natural reader software improves oral reading fluency for English language learners. In this recent study, the natural reader software was considered as independent variable and the oral reading fluency score was regarded as dependent one. The subjects of this investigation were students of English education study program. The number of the students of group (1) were 32 students who are taught using natural reader software and this group was considered to be an experimental group and The number of the students of group (2) were35 students who are taught without using natural reader software this group was considered to be control group. This study has proven that this software can significantly prove that most of  students have more accurate and more precise reading skills. This study has revealed that oral reading fluency instruction does improve global reading proficiency at all grade levels

English language assessment is a subject lesson in some university in Indonesia, and it is one of the requirement to be able to master by the students in advocating language learners’ quality and competency. Assessing the language skills is a critical process to improve language capacity and competency in mastering language skill correctly. In the other hand, assessment as the most important thing to be understood by all language learners in making their process of teaching and learning are understandable and gaining good outcomes as the expectation. The objective of this paper is to outline the importance of language assessment subject for student who major in teachers training and education faculty. This paper used qualitative descriptive approach, with observation, interview and study documents to collect the data. The triangulation validation is used to validate the instruments. The sample of this research is 5 semester students of teachers training and education from University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang with the total sample is 33 students, majoring of English education study program. The result of this research can be simulated as; firstly, giving understanding language assessment to English learners can motivate and help them in doing their final assignment/mini research easily. Secondly, understanding English language assessment made students’critical thinking increase, because they start thinking about many kinds of language research and the solution in improving English language problems. Thirdly, learning English assessment gave a clear outline for English learners to support their research as a final requirement in getting bachelor degree and foster their competency as the language education learners.

Ambiguityis strictly speaking, used to describe aword, phrase, or sentence when it has more thanone interpretation.Sometimes we found many ambiguities sentences when we are reading or listen to the English sentences. Multiinterpretations not only happen from the English language learners, but also in native speakers themselves. Thisstudy investigated about is there any different interpretation of ambiguities sentences made by students of class c,second semester students of PPs Unnes?, and what types of ambiguous sentence majority missing in theirtranslating. The objectives of study were to know that the students of PPs Unnes have different interpretations whenthey are translating the ambiguities sentences and to identifying the types of ambiguities. This study used descriptivequalitative approach; ten postgraduate students from Class C PPs Unnes participated in this study as respondents.All were university students majoring in English. They were given 5 ambiguous sentences. Sentences includedifferent sources of ambiguity such as, structural ambiguity, and lexical ambiguity. The subjects were asked totranslate the sentences into Indonesian language. The result of study presented that participants who are not nativespeakers of English exhibited the different interpretations in translate both the given types of ambiguous sentences.Almost all of ten respondents have different interpretations in each ambiguous sentence. Most respondents showdifferent translating majority in lexical ambiguous sentences.

This paper is a part of research project carried out to enhance the English learners’ listening comprehension through listening strategies instruction. The research worked on classroom action research design, conducted in two cycles by involving a group from fresh year English learners in English study program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Universitas Islam Riau on 2017/2018 academic year. The findings revealed gradual improvement of the students’ performances in doing the listening tests. At the first cycle, the students could reach 25 out of 40 questions, in which this number is four points less than the students’ achievement in cycle 2. Then, in range 10-25 questions of correct answers in cycle 1 could be reached by 24 students, while in cycle 2, there were 32 students got correct answers at that range. Furthermore, there were 6 students could reach less than 10 questions correctly, beside that there were only 3 students in cycle 2. In conclusion, there have been improvement of the students’ achievements in listening tasks provided in all meetings during cycle 1 and 2. Although they found challenges in completing the tests, the teachers’ assistances in guiding them to apply some strategies contributed towards the improvement of their performances in listening. This study intends to find out and to describe apology strategies made by the sixth and eighth semester students of English Education Study Program of Islamic State University (UIN) Raden Fatah Palembang, and to explain how the pragmatic transfer interferes the apology strategies. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. Written discourse completion tasks and observation by doing a role play were used as the instruments to obtain the data. There were 66 students selected as the subjects of study. The data obtained were analyzed based on the classification of apology strategy proposed by Olshtain and Cohen (1983). As result, it was found that there were five apology strategies made by the students, for example, using the word sorry to express regret was considered the most frequently used strategy. Then, the result also showed that the speakers who have low social status tend to use polite strategy in all levels of social relationships (strangers and acquaintances). For the speakers who have high social status and equal tend to use less polite and casual expressions, respectively. Moreover, some students use some pragmatic transfers in expressing apology strategies influenced by their L1 (mother tongue) or L2 (Indonesian) culture.

In Thailand, the question of how to improve the abilities of English language learners without affecting their Thai identity has arisen. This article reports a study that demonstrates that a series of specifically northern Thainess-based instructions for Grade 4 pupils in northern Thailand could not only teach the pupils about their northern Thainess, but also improve their English vocabulary. A set of northern Thainess-based English lessons as well as the corresponding Thainess and English vocabulary pretests and posttests were designed for use in four elementary schools in the north of Thailand. The pretest and posttest scores on both aspects showed that both the pupils’ appreciation of Thainess and their knowledge of English vocabulary considerably improved. The result suggests the positive effects of this system of learning.  From a pedagogical viewpoint, it seems that the use of such materials may well be used to improve and reshape English language education throughout the country.

This article contains a description of a research project carried out with a group of English Language Pre-service Teachers (ELPTs) of a state University in Bogotá, Colombia. The purpose of the study was to portray the experiences the ELPTs went through as English language learners, their feelings and insights as such. The main source to collect data was the autobiographies. The results show that the English language learners’ process of learning has a strong influence of the language policies connected to the National Program of Bilingualism. They also show that it is necessary to create a cumulative program of English for each phase of schooling in order to avoid overlapping and to provide a more motivating learning process.
