The peculiarities of the modern educational process require new approaches to techniques and methods used in language teaching. One of the ways for optimization of lessons in fo- reign languages is aimed at integration of cognitive linguistics and its achievements into the struc-ture of such classes. The linguocognitive basis fits well into the communicative approach to teach-ing languages and allows for increased efficiency of education through using the principles and methods of cognitive science, which provides a means of explanation for a number of linguistic phenomena, including grammatical, the explanation of which is difficult within the traditional ap-proach to teaching. Certain aspects of English grammar, that are difficult to be taught, are being considered and the efficiency of methods of cognitive linguistics in their teaching is proven. We demonstrate the importance of considering cognitive metaphor as a mechanism that is crucial for teaching English prepositions and modal verbs. A number of practical researches, that have proven the high potential of classes, structured around linguocognitive basis, is provided. We also prove the possibility of integration of the methods of cognitive linguistics and the methods, developed within the traditional approach to language teaching. In conclusion we provide the arguments for the efficiency of teaching English grammar on linguocognitive basis.

We consider the peculiarities and prospects of modern methods of teaching English in their connection with the cognitive sciences. The key aspects of teaching English within the framework of the communicative-cognitive approach using cognitive linguistics as a linguistic basis are considered. The importance of the balance of the communicative and cognitive aspects of a foreign language lesson is substantiated while providing evidence in favor of the effectiveness of teaching a foreign language, which is of a communicative and cognitive nature. We provide examples of possible difficulties occurring while organizing foreign language teaching and suggest some ways to overcome those difficulties. The prospects for the development of communicative-oriented teaching of a foreign language are outlined. We provide evidence for high potential of foreign language teaching organized on a linguocognitive basis, in particular in a number of cases that are difficult for traditional approaches. By the example of negation in English, the effectiveness of teaching a foreign language on a linguocognitive basis is substantiated. We provide a classification of functional characteristics of negation from the standpoint of cognitive linguistics. It substantiates the potential of using role-playing games and sketches in the structure of a communicative-cognitive lesson, based on the principles of cognitive linguistics. We provide a set of examples of role-play games and sketches for teaching negation in English on a linguocognitive basis and provides evidence for their high potential in teaching the theoretical and practical aspects of English.

Cognitive linguistics has been aimed at revealing the very nature of language for the last several decades. One of the field’s most significant contributions has been the abstraction of the general patterns, or image schemas, underlying grammatical concepts. In this paper, we propose that English grammar-teaching methods adopting image schema theory offer strong benefits for language teaching. As schematic explanations given to learners are more visible and comprehensible than ordinary verbal-based ones, this method offers a clearer and more engaging way to understand the target grammar. We also present data collected from experiments conducted with more than 400 native Japanese-speaking students at one national and one private university that support the effectiveness of this method.

The article deals with the description and analysis of the most important methods of foreign language teaching. The authors describe teaching English in Ukraine during the global pandemic caused by the spread of coronavirus disease Covid-19 in early spring 2020. The study aims at reviewing the most important works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars. They describe the most modern methods of teaching English in higher educational institutions of Ukraine. The scholars pay particular attention to the description of the latest English teaching methods, which they use at Uzhhorod National University. The observation process allowed us to summarize information about the features of distance learning at Uzhhorod National University. Analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, abstraction generalization, and the descriptive method are applied. The study found out the educational process has been reformed in Ukrainian universities by European quality requirements for education: informatization-globalization of academic space, integration of functions in modern education, establishing Ukrainian universities cooperation with European and Eastern educational institutions in the field of education and research as well as changes in the educational process associated with the rapid spread of Covid-19, which forced the entire civilized world to seek new types of learning, new methods, and tools. During the pandemic, it is vital to provide personality-oriented education. This knowledge provides optimal conditions for the harmonious development of each student. Further research into the latest computer technologies for foreign language teaching may be a prospect.

Teaching grammar is one of the aspects of language teaching. From the past, different methods, like teaching from rules, teaching from examples, teaching through texts have been used to teach grammar in Nepal. So, this research was prepared to study the teachers’ assumption for teaching English grammar at lower secondary level in Nepal. The issue of teaching prepositions, articles, tense, tags, causative verbs and subject verb agreement are raised in this research. In this research, both the primary and secondary sources of data were used. Questionnaires were used to collect the data for the research. The result shows that most of the teachers use inductive ways to teach grammar lessons or they used student-centered techniques. It also concludes that the level of the learners, context and nature of the text also make the teachers to select the method for teaching.

A cognitive turn in contemporary methodologies of teaching foreign languages is primarily associated with employment of the brain / mind covert potential (memory capacities, emotional responses, particulars of the individual’s perceptions, etc.) in language learning. Meanwhile, the cognitive approach to language teaching takes little notice of such powerful tool as conceptual structures that underpin linguistic structures and, therefore, facilitate their understanding and acquisition. The nature of relations between linguistic and conceptual structures is focused on in Semantics of Lingual Networks (SLN) — a theoretical conception extended into the felds of applied cognitive linguistics, with lexicography and language teaching among them. This article demonstrates how SLN 18 ISSN 2311-2425 (Print) ISSN 2412-2491 (Online) Філологічні студії. Збірник наукових праць • Випуск 13, 2019 contributes to developing the Linguacon (Lat. Lingua + Conscientia) system of teaching English via application of conceptual schemas and conceptual ontologies. The paper proposes a brief discussion of the SLN issues, demonstrates their projection upon the Linguacon system, and describes the procedure of compiling a combinatory thesaurus which is the pivot of this system. In the Linguacon system, the combinatory thesaurus performs several functions: (1) it structures information within the topic of discussion, (2) it provides systematized sets of phrasal linguistic expressions necessary for this discussion, (3) it links teaching grammar to a thematically homogeneous vocabulary, (4) it changes the traditional “text → lexicon” vector of teaching a foreign language to the “lexicon → text” vector, when the lexicon (in its phrasal version least conspicuous in conventional teaching practices) is adopted for text production. An illustration is provided by the “SCHOOL” combinatory thesaurus. It exemplifes the data which are applied in the classroom to teach grammar and develop texts relevant for the discussed topic. Presumably, the described principles of compiling combinatory thesauri used in teaching English are applicable for compiling similar thesauri for teaching other foreign languages.

The main aim of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of using games in teaching English grammar to young learners. Today there is an overall agreement among researchers in foreign language teaching and language acquisition that grammar should be taught at all levels of instruction, including to young learners, bearing in mind that it should be considered in the context of meaningful communication. The paper first presents a review of the literature in the area of grammar teaching and using games for language teaching purposes. The second part presents the results of an experimental study aimed at testing the hypothesis that activities based on grammar games are a more efficient strategy for teaching grammar than more traditional ELT activities. The results of the experiment prove the efficacy of using grammar games in teaching grammar to young learners.

One of the main goals of foreign language teaching is establishing a communicative competence in students in its tight connection with the culture of the corresponding country. The modern foreign language pedagogy is in a constant search of the ways to improve the educational process. One of such ways – lignucognitive – is being considered. It allows to integrate the achievements of cognitive linguistics into the structure of communicative-oriented teaching for education quality improvement. There were mentioned the results of a number of scientific researches that have proven to be effective in implementing of different methods of cognitive linguistics while teaching lexical and grammatical aspects of foreign language. While focusing on a series of foreign language teaching linguocognitive studies it has been proven that the principles and methods of cognitive linguistics can be integrated into the structure of lessons. Such an integration meets a number of criteria for an effective education: accessibility, visualization, explication, motivation, anthropocentricity, structuredness, communicative orientation, cultural conditionality, reflectivity. Eventually that allows to achieve the main goal of the pedagogic process while teaching foreign languages – language acquisition in all its aspects and its connection to the culture of the corresponding country.

The interdisciplinary aspect of Language teaching allows it to always remain in the active phase of its development. This communication aims to analyze the variants of coexistence of the acquired knowledge of several sciences in the organization of the teaching of modern languages. The authors study the epistemological origins of the current processes guiding the functioning of the teaching of French as a foreign language, analyze key concepts, which emergence is due to the combination of ideas from different fields, and share experiences of teaching French based on the interaction of avant-garde approaches. The recourse to the theory of language activity, cognitive and discursive sciences, emerged in this new anthropocentric paradigm where the learner is placed at the center of the educational process, reshapes the methodological pillars of the didactics of FFL, namely its object, its objectives. , its content and methods. At the same time, these areas offer tools for building a language teaching system best suited to current axiological values.
