Teaching grammar is one of the aspects of language teaching. From the past, different methods, like teaching from rules, teaching from examples, teaching through texts have been used to teach grammar in Nepal. So, this research was prepared to study the teachers’ assumption for teaching English grammar at lower secondary level in Nepal. The issue of teaching prepositions, articles, tense, tags, causative verbs and subject verb agreement are raised in this research. In this research, both the primary and secondary sources of data were used. Questionnaires were used to collect the data for the research. The result shows that most of the teachers use inductive ways to teach grammar lessons or they used student-centered techniques. It also concludes that the level of the learners, context and nature of the text also make the teachers to select the method for teaching.

The main aim of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of using games in teaching English grammar to young learners. Today there is an overall agreement among researchers in foreign language teaching and language acquisition that grammar should be taught at all levels of instruction, including to young learners, bearing in mind that it should be considered in the context of meaningful communication. The paper first presents a review of the literature in the area of grammar teaching and using games for language teaching purposes. The second part presents the results of an experimental study aimed at testing the hypothesis that activities based on grammar games are a more efficient strategy for teaching grammar than more traditional ELT activities. The results of the experiment prove the efficacy of using grammar games in teaching grammar to young learners.

The purpose of this paper was to explore the language teachers’ attitudes towards teaching English grammar. In addition, this study compared the teachers’ beliefs and their actual behaviors in the class. The “Action Theory” was chosen regarding this issue. It was investigated if there was any compatibility between their beliefs and practice or not and in case of incompatibility, the subjects were aware of it or not. This paper also tried to explore the reasons of this incompatibility as well as to find out the factors that influenced the teachers’ actual behaviors in the class. The present study is a case study done in a semi-government language center in Mashhad, Iran. Three female language teachers were selected as subjects for this research. To identify the language teachers’ attitudes towards teaching English grammar, a series of observations was done. And also, some interviews with three English teachers were planned to make known their attitudes towards teaching grammar. The Constant Comparative Method (CCM) was used to analyze the data obtained from observations and interviews. The findings of this study revealed that sometimes there was no compatibility between beliefs and actual behaviors. Most of the time, teachers were not aware of this incompatibility.   Keywords - Attitudes, Grammar, Belief, Behavior, Action Theory and Compatibility

The paper deals with teaching the Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous by using the scripts and clips from the blockbuster saga The Avengers. The relevance of this topic lies in the fact that grammar is traditionally considered a difficult aspect of learning a language. If we start including popular culture into the classroom and try to teach the grammar this way, we might make it easier for them to identify with the content that is traditionally considered uninteresting and difficult to master. The aim is to see whether teaching grammar through popular culture, set within a top-down approach of focusing on meaning (uses) rather than form, could prove to be effective. Another aim is to ascertain how 10 students (out of 20) from the experimental group would respond to this modern approach. A two-group experimental design was used and accompanied by a descriptive and statistical analysis. The testing technique was applied. The control group better mastered the form of the tenses, while the experimental group better mastered the meaning (uses) of the tenses. The latter group found the class more motivating. Teachers could consider teaching English grammar this way. However, to achieve better results, it would be advisable to focus on the form of the tenses as well.

Multinational Companies in a bid to increase their revenue and profit are now eyeing the emerging markets. Considering the saturation in the urban market they are now targeting the consumers in rural markets of emerging economies. Lowering price by reducing the volume, customization, mass production are the strategies of the past, these companies have now come up with innovative strategies wherein they involve the rural population so that they help them in reaching to the customers in the remotest part of the country. This case study is an attempt to study the strategies used by the companies to reach the rural population and arrive at a framework used by the companies in India and Indonesia. The information is collected from the secondary sources to compile and analyze the strategies of leading MNCs to increasing their share in the emerging economies.

Teaching and learning grammar have become arduous tasks in the English classroom. On the one hand, students feel they are studying the same topics repeatedly. Teachers, on the other one, think students are not able to acquire the grammatical contents of the syllabus. As a direct consequence, it can be assumed it is high time to change the traditional methodology and introduce new approaches which allow us to involve students in their learning process. This paper is aimed at demonstrating the effectiveness of using the flipped classroom approach when teaching grammar. As it is a learner-centred model, students actively expose to contents at home and the in-class time is used to do tasks related to the previously worked contents. The instrument employed for this study is a questionnaire designed to know students’ opinion about a flipped experience implemented in the English classroom. The results show that this teaching model can be a good option to avoid students’ demotivation when teaching English grammar.

A cognitive turn in contemporary methodologies of teaching foreign languages is primarily associated with employment of the brain / mind covert potential (memory capacities, emotional responses, particulars of the individual’s perceptions, etc.) in language learning. Meanwhile, the cognitive approach to language teaching takes little notice of such powerful tool as conceptual structures that underpin linguistic structures and, therefore, facilitate their understanding and acquisition. The nature of relations between linguistic and conceptual structures is focused on in Semantics of Lingual Networks (SLN) — a theoretical conception extended into the felds of applied cognitive linguistics, with lexicography and language teaching among them. This article demonstrates how SLN 18 ISSN 2311-2425 (Print) ISSN 2412-2491 (Online) Філологічні студії. Збірник наукових праць • Випуск 13, 2019 contributes to developing the Linguacon (Lat. Lingua + Conscientia) system of teaching English via application of conceptual schemas and conceptual ontologies. The paper proposes a brief discussion of the SLN issues, demonstrates their projection upon the Linguacon system, and describes the procedure of compiling a combinatory thesaurus which is the pivot of this system. In the Linguacon system, the combinatory thesaurus performs several functions: (1) it structures information within the topic of discussion, (2) it provides systematized sets of phrasal linguistic expressions necessary for this discussion, (3) it links teaching grammar to a thematically homogeneous vocabulary, (4) it changes the traditional “text → lexicon” vector of teaching a foreign language to the “lexicon → text” vector, when the lexicon (in its phrasal version least conspicuous in conventional teaching practices) is adopted for text production. An illustration is provided by the “SCHOOL” combinatory thesaurus. It exemplifes the data which are applied in the classroom to teach grammar and develop texts relevant for the discussed topic. Presumably, the described principles of compiling combinatory thesauri used in teaching English are applicable for compiling similar thesauri for teaching other foreign languages.

This paper analyzes the relationships between selected aspects of human security-poverty and health security, social justice and sustainable development in Nigeria, representing the African continent. Human security, an emerging paradigm for understanding global vulnerabilities, is widely defined as consisting of seven key areas. However, the aspects of poverty and health security are selected for this study because of the overlapping effects on all the other aspects. Data for the conceptual and theoretical section of the paper are drawn from secondary sources and complimented by data from primary sources. These include events analyses by the author and content analyses of documents such as United Nations (UN) Human Development Index (HDI), Legatum Prosperity Index and Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) for a selected period. Research methodology is case study based. The paper’s main finding centres on the levels of poverty and threats to health security that have confronted majority of ordinary Nigerians in the past two decades despite the country’s huge material endowments. In the light of this, the focus of knowledge in the country’s immediate and distant future should be human security and not state-centric security.

The peculiarities of the modern educational process require new approaches to techniques and methods used in language teaching. One of the ways for optimization of lessons in fo- reign languages is aimed at integration of cognitive linguistics and its achievements into the struc-ture of such classes. The linguocognitive basis fits well into the communicative approach to teach-ing languages and allows for increased efficiency of education through using the principles and methods of cognitive science, which provides a means of explanation for a number of linguistic phenomena, including grammatical, the explanation of which is difficult within the traditional ap-proach to teaching. Certain aspects of English grammar, that are difficult to be taught, are being considered and the efficiency of methods of cognitive linguistics in their teaching is proven. We demonstrate the importance of considering cognitive metaphor as a mechanism that is crucial for teaching English prepositions and modal verbs. A number of practical researches, that have proven the high potential of classes, structured around linguocognitive basis, is provided. We also prove the possibility of integration of the methods of cognitive linguistics and the methods, developed within the traditional approach to language teaching. In conclusion we provide the arguments for the efficiency of teaching English grammar on linguocognitive basis.

Abstract: The purpose of the research was  to evaluate the implementation of KKNI based curriculum.  This study used a qualitative approach, case study. The data collection techniques were interviews, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman techniques. The results of the research show four variables that were evaluated. From the result of data analysis it was found that First, in the aspect of the context variable, the perception of lecturers and students about curriculum implementation based on KKNI was already good, but the perceptions of the educational staffs were not good. Second, in terms of the input variable, it was seen from three points; the vision and mission, KKNI socialization, and learning management. Third, from the aspect of the process variable, in the learning process, the lecturers of Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training (FITK) tended to have implemented student- centered learning. Meanwhile the lecturers of Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH) still tended to implement teacher- centered learning processes. Fourth, in terms of product variable, the achievement of the students who took curriculum class in reference to KKNI were very good.
