The novelty and relevance of the research are as it contains a poetic analysis of the novel “Homecoming” of the modern German writer B. Schlink in the perspective of the issue of “inserted constructions” as a principle for organizing an artistic text in the contemporary novel. We form the current task of researching B. Schlink’s work in the light of the problems of non-classical artistry, and also with the need to identify the characteristics of understanding in the novel of the important social and political processes of the modern era. As a result of the analysis we show a new poetic significance of “inserted constructions”, they become an essential element of the textual organization of the novel “Homecoming”. On this basis we establish that narrative and “inserted constructions” not only overlap, but also interpenetrate and interact on each other in the text of the novel, so they generate new shades and new meaning combinations – this enables to artistically express the complexity and kaleidics of the modern world. This justifies the modern German novel inclusion in the general art process of adequate poetic tools development aimed at reflecting the changed ideas about the man and the world.

In a modern global historical context, scholars have often regarded piracy as an essentially European concept which was inappropriately applied by the expanding European powers to the rest of the world, mainly for the purpose of furthering colonial forms of domination in the economic, political, military, legal and cultural spheres. By contrast, this edited volume highlights the relevance of both European and non-European understandings of piracy to the development of global maritime security and freedom of navigation. It explores the significance of 'legal posturing' on the part of those accused of piracy, as well as the existence of non-European laws and regulations regarding piracy and related forms of maritime violence in the early modern era. The authors in this volume highlight cases from various parts of the early-modern world, thereby explaining piracy as a global phenomenon.

This article deals with the concept of chronotope in the text of the novel "Mrs. Dalloway” by Virginia Woolf. Certain characteristics of chronotope exemplifying these concepts were selected and analyzed, the former serving as an integral part of the analysis of works of the modern era. As a result of a continuous sampling and subsequent analysis of the text of the novel, we concluded that despite the contrast of the characters from different social classes, they are united by a single spatio-temporal continuum regulated by the chronotope. Virginia Woolf managed to accurately and truthfully convey the atmosphere of 1923, as she was a direct witness to the events taking place in the country and the world at that time.

In the early modern world, exceptional bodies are linked to knowledge, not as the production of knowledge of the self through the scrutiny of those who have been ‘othered’, but as a means of inducing self-scrutiny and awareness of the limitations of human understanding. Exceptional beings and phenomena entice us to consider the world beyond that which is familiar to us and raise questions concerning our knowledge systems based on notions of what is natural or, in our modern era, normal. Rather than reacting with horror, disgust or pity, we can learn to respect the variety, mobility and resilience of the natural world in our contemplation of that which we see as exceptional.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the transcultural literary text as a space for the “meeting” of languages and cultures. The modern world exists in the conditions of global transculturalism (F. Ortiz), when sign systems interact, giving rise to new images of the world. The language, which translates into a wide communicative space the elements of the original culture for the author, experiences its influence on itself. The literary text acquires multidimensionality and “convexity” due to the inclusion in it of alternative genre forms, narrative strategies and tactics, archetypes. On the basis of the novel series “Dreams of the Damned”, written by the Kazakh writer A. Zhaksylykov, we demonstrate in this work the mechanisms of “internal intercultural interaction” between Kazakh and Russian cultures, using the methods of hermeneutic commentary, mythopoetic and narrative analysis. We come to the conclusion that cultural content requires the creation of adequate forms of artistic representation. The result is the creation of new novel forms of depiction, the complication of the artistic images of the world and the strengthening of the empathic effect that a literary text can provide.

Introduction. The phenomenon of “tradition” is a key link in understanding the specifics of the current cultural processes. The problem of preserving and developing the ethnocultural tradition has acquired a new impetus for comprehension against the background of the emergence at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries of the so-called ethnic revival, the increased attention of peoples, including the Finno-Ugric ones to their own cultural and historical roots. This is facilitated by the strengthening of the integration of cultures within the Finno-Ugric community in the context of the formation of a new socio-cultural paradigm. Materials and Methods. The theoretical material of the study was the work of scholars in the field of studying the modern socio-cultural process, in particular on the example of the cultural heritage of the Finno-Ugric peoples. The reliability and research validity of the results is provided by the sociocultural approach, as well as by comparative and typological research methods. Results and Discussion. In the process of being an ethnocultural tradition in modern society, the process of festivization of the cultural process plays an important role, among other circumstances. It is characterized by the use of the phenomenon of ethnoculture as an external attribute, the functioning of which is reduced only to entertainment, creating the effect of festivity of the action, which leads to the devaluation of its value. However, the analysis of the new picture of the world that took shape at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries allows us to conclude that the idea of the integrity of the world, the understanding of space and time that underlie it, as well as the ecological and adaptive potential of the ethnocultural tradition remain consonant with the modern world, and this gives grounds for their preservation and development in the modern era. These conclusions fully apply to the cultural practice of the Finno-Ugric peoples at the present stage. Conclusion. On the basis of the studied material, a conclusion was made about the change in the functioning of the Finno-Ugric ethnocultural tradition in accordance with the objective conditions of its existence.

Expressionism was a movement in art and literature which presented a very subjective view of the world. The movement itself revolted against realism and naturalism, while the technique distorted reality, displayed the human emotions and tried to reveal the psycho-spiritual truth in the Modern world. The Glass Menagerie (1944) tells the story of a broken modern family with three characters- Tom, Laura and Amanda, all of whom live in their own reality. This familys encounter with another worldly character Jim, however, crashed their fragile world around them. In the modern era, when people are often fed extraordinary dreams through different channels, The Glass Menagerie tells the story of sufferings, unfulfilled desires, purposes, ambition, and fear of losing self, familial discord and exposes the reality to them. Tennessee Williams in his play uses expressionism to give his audiences a look into this undetected reality of the world.

Abstract: This article reflects upon the dual and complex character of Nietzsche’s interpretation of metaphysics. It is argued that the philosopher’s criticisms are not directed at metaphysics as such, but rather at its anachronistic and continued presence in the values and institutions of the modern world. The dichotomy between the world of sense experience and a transcendent and superior realm, though of unquestionable value at a certain point in human history, came to be, in the modern era, a fearsome obstacle to the expression of man’s will to power, and, hence, to his very survival.

In addition to geopolitical and economic factors, the factor of values also influences the choice of priorities in foreign policy of the state. The study of values is of particular importance  for understanding the principles of foreign policy of Germany because these values were often the basis of various actions of the German state on the world stage, and along with the change of system of values in Germany, the formation of the foundations of European unity was formed.
