The following article is the result of an assignment that was designed specifically to meet the needs of the first author in attaining the objectives for our Theoretical Foundations of Nursing course, a component for the Advanced Standing Nursing Baccalaureate Program at the University of New Brunswick. A key component of our course involved learning about and living Dr. Jean Watson's (2008, 2018) human caring/unitary caring science theory. The first author describes how she lives the Caritas principles in her journey of caring and advocating for her son, Noah who is living his dying in palliative care.

Abstract Objective Dying is mostly seen as a dreadful event, never a happy experience. Yet, as palliative care physicians, we have seen so many patients who remained happy despite facing death. Hence, we conducted this qualitative study to explore happiness in palliative care patients at the University of Malaya Medical Centre. Method Twenty terminally ill patients were interviewed with semi-structured questions. The results were thematically analyzed. Results Eight themes were generated: the meaning of happiness, connections, mindset, pleasure, health, faith, wealth, and work. Our results showed that happiness is possible at the end of life. Happiness can coexist with pain and suffering. Social connections were the most important element of happiness at the end of life. Wealth and work were given the least emphasis. From the descriptions of our patients, we recognized a tendency for the degree of importance to shift from the hedonic happiness to eudaimonic happiness as patients experienced a terminal illness. Significance of results To increase the happiness of palliative care patients, it is crucial to assess the meaning of happiness for each patient and the degree of importance for each happiness domain to allow targeted interventions.

Background: Despite growing interest from policy makers, researchers and activists in the global development of palliative care, there is still little science to underpin it. This study presents the methods deployed in the creation of a ‘world map’ of palliative care development. Building on two previous iterations, with improved rigour and taking into account reviewers’ feedback, the aim of this recalibrated version of the study is to determine the level of palliative care development in 198 United Nations recognised countries in 2017, whilst ensuring comparability with previous versions. We present methods of data collection and analysis. Methods and analysis: Primary data on the level of palliative care development in 2017 was collected from in-country experts through an online questionnaire and, where required, supplemented by published documentary sources and grey literature. Data relating to the total population of each country as well as per capita opioid consumption were derived from independent sources. Data analysis was conducted according to a new scoring system and algorithm developed by the research team.   Ethics and dissemination: The study was approved by the University of Glasgow College of Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee. Findings of the study will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, as a contribution to the second edition of the Global Atlas of Palliative Care at the End-of-Life, and via social media, including the Glasgow End of Life Studies Group blog and the project website. Limitations of the study: There are potential biases associated with self-reporting by key in-country experts. In some countries, the identified key expert failed to complete the questionnaire in whole or part and data limitations were potentially compounded by language restrictions, as questionnaires were available only in three European languages. The study relied in part on data from independent sources, the accuracy of these data could not be verified.

ZOO*4300 (Marine Biology and Oceanography) is a senior-level field course offered by the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph. This two-week course is held at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrew’s New Brunswick, Canada. Students enrolled in the course study various aspects of the ecology, behaviour, physiology, biochemistry and genetics of marine organisms using a variety of oceanographic techniques. The course also includes group exercises to study various intertidal and sub-tidal environments as well as boat cruises to collect plankton, benthic invertebrates, marine fish, and to observe marine mammals. The course provides excellent opportunities for students to familiarize themselves with state-of-the-art techniques involved in various branches of marine biology and oceanography and conduct an individual research project. This feature highlights three individual research projects by University of Guelph students. ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze nurses’ role in assisting patients in palliative care, with emphasis on the spiritual dimension, in the light of Theory of Human Caring. Methods: this is an exploratory, qualitative study, carried out in a hospital in João Pessoa, Paraíba, between August and December 2019, with 10 nurses. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were used. For analysis, we opted for content analysis. Results: the spiritual dimension of care is contemplated by several religious and spiritual practices. These are respected and encouraged by nurses, although there is difficulty in providing care for the spiritual dimension. Final Considerations: nurses have attitudes consistent with Jean Watson’s Theory and apply the Caritas Process elements during assistance to patients’ spiritual dimension in palliative care.

Optical transitions from two microwave discharge excited states of argon have been observed using cavity ring-down spectroscopy. These transitions originate on the high-lying levels, 3d[1/2] 1° and 3d[3/2] 2° , and terminate on the nf ′[5/2] Rydberg (n = 8 to 22) levels, which, except for n = 8, lie between the 2P3/2 and 2P1/2 ionization thresholds. In total, 24 such spectral lines have been observed. The quantum defect for the f ′ series has been measured and is compared to previously measured values. We observe a nearly threefold jump in line width in going from n = 8 to n = 9, below and above the 2P3/2 threshold, respectively. The line widths are broad and increase monotonically with n (above 9), in contrast to the narrowing of line widths usually observed. We cannot attribute this to a single source but conclude that collisional, quasielastic l-mixing of the nf ′[5/2] Rydberg states plays a significant role.

The central place in the presented article is devoted to talent management: the theoretical foundations of talent management in the personnel management system are reflected – its concept and essence, its significance in modern conditions are considered. Talent is considered as a set of necessary competencies, on the basis of which the value of the competence approach in identifying talents is established. Within the framework of the study, based on the professional standard of a specialist in personnel management, a competence model was developed, according to which talents were determined among students of the training direction "Personnel Management" of the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin. The results of the study demonstrate that the student training program at the university corresponds to the model of key competencies of a specialist in personnel management, and, therefore, meets the requirements of the professional standard. However, it requires improvement in the development of a number of competencies.

The textbook examines pedagogical questions from the perspective of selected current fields of Social Work. Basic pedagogical concepts including fieldwork, research, and everyday professional life are discussed. Theoretical foundations of pedagogy in a globalized world world are introduced. Pedagogical habits are discussed with regard to the concept of „orientation towards daily life“. Different systematic approaches to pedagogical action based on the concept of „subject orientation“ are outlined (e. g., Flitner, Giesecke, and Prange). Democracy education and peace pedagogy are taken up as exemplary pedagogical topics. The textbook is designed for lectures at the university level. It contains suggestions for further study. Reflective questions support the acquisition of reflexive professional competence.

As Jacqueline Jones Royster articulated at the 2006 Conference on College Composition and Communication, English departments are already assessing themselves and should resist suggestions by the Spellings Commission on the Future of Higher Education that a standardized method of assessing students and programs in higher education is needed. In the fall of 2006, the University of Louisville was due to be reviewed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The First-Year Composition program chose to conduct an internal assessment in the fall of 2004. This chapter details the Composition program assessment conducted at the University of Louisville and includes a comprehensive analysis of its rationale, theoretical foundations, methodologies, and results. This chapter also articulates the difficulties of such a large-scale assessment as well as the uniquely local challenges faced during the process.

Mathematics at matriculation level (Grade 12) is one of the subjects required for admission to the Veterinary Nursing Diploma in the Faculty at Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria. The present study shows that there is no statistically significant relationship between the grade of mathematics at matriculation level and the success or failure in the 1st year of study. There is, however, a statistical difference in the adjusted mark obtained for mathematics at matriculation level between the groups that passed and failed the 1st year of the veterinary nursing course. The results of this research are not consistent with other research which showed that secondary school mathematics results are not a significant factor in tertiary education. It is recommended that selection criteria for veterinary nurses should in future still include mathematics, but that cognisance should be taken of the mark obtained and students with higher marks (above 57 %) given preference.
