Background: Free radicals are molecules without any electron pairs, unstable, and highly reactive. Antioxidants are needed to reduce free radicals. Antioxidants provide various benefits in dentistry as a preventive agent for caries, healing, bone formation, mouthwash, preventive and therapeutic cancer, and reduction of periodontal disease progressions. Additionally, research on antioxidants is still undergone due to the existence of free radical residues on bleached teeth. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), ascorbic acid (AA), and sodium ascorbate (SA) are ingridients that have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can be in two forms solution and gel. Solutions have a higher substance releasing power than gel. Gel is extremely adhesive, so it does not flow easily. Meanwhile, solutions are rather unstable because it flows easily. Antioxidant activities were evaluated with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) Assay method. Purpose: Analyzing through literature reviews the potential antioxidants of EGCG, AA, and SA in solution and gel forms by DPPH Assay. Reviews: There were eight journal articles used in this review. The first article described antioxidant solutions in which EGCG was higher than sodium ascorbate. The second article showed that antioxidant gel EGCG was lower than sodium ascorbate. The third journal explained that ascorbic acid was higher than sodium ascorbate both in solution and gel forms. The other articles provided some information about the antioxidant activity percentages of EGCG, SA, and AA in the forms of gel and solutions by DPPH assay. Conclusion: EGCG has a higher antioxidant activity than SA, but it is lower when compared to AA in both solution and gel forms by DPPH assay.

The presence of natural antioxidant in plants is well known. Plant phenolics constitute one of the major groups of components that act as antioxidant and free radical terminator. Hence, this study focused on investigating the antioxidant activity of Celery plant (Apium graveolens L). The fresh leaves were collected, crushed and extracted with ethanol and acetone by maceration. The radical scavenging properties of the extracts were determined by measuring changes in absorbance of DPPH radical at a wave lenght of 517 nm by UV and ascorbic acid is used as the standard. It showed that the crude ethanolic extract has higher antioxidant activity compared to ascorbic acid and acetone extract with less scavenging activity. The values were (IC50 114.6 µg/mL) for ascorbic acid, (IC50 112 µg/mL) for the crude ethanolic extract and (IC50172 µg/mL) for crude acetone extract. The result shows that Celery plant grown in Jos possess good antioxidant properties which may be linked to the presence of phenolics and flavonoids in the plant, which justifies its use as a medicinal plant. This can be further investigated for the isolation and identification of active compounds of medicinal utilities.

The current study was intended to evaluate abortifacient and antioxidant activity of Avicennia marina leaves extracts. Abortifacient activity was evaluated in rats, compared with standard drug (Mifepristone) and antioxidant activity was evaluated by using three free radicals (Superoxide, Hydroxyl and DPPH) compared with Ascorbic acid. The extracts were showed pre implantation loss, post implantation loss of implantations and decreased the survival ration of foetuses. Among all extracts hydroalcoholic extract showed better activity. The selected plant extracts showed concentration dependent percentage inhibition of free radicals. Among three extracts hydroalcoholic extract showed better activity with IC50 values on superoxide, hydroxyl and DPPH radicals were 203μg, 237μg and 143μg. From the results obtained during the study it the hydroalcoholic extract was used for the isolation of pure compounds, and isolated the different compounds (β-sitosterol, Lupeol and Betulinic acid).

Ethenyl indole exhibits antioxidant activity in a substituent dependent manner. Ethenyls bearing strong electron withdrawing substituents show weak or no antioxidant activities, whereas ethenyls with electron donating substituents exhibit antioxidant properties comparable to vitamin E.

This study reports on the isolation and identification of Methylobacterium radiotolerans MAMP 4754 from the seeds of the medicinal plant, Combretum erythrophyllum, for the purposes of investigating antimicrobial and antioxidant activities from this endophyte. The strain identity was confirmed by 16S rRNA-based phylogeny and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Ethyl acetate and chloroform (1 : 1 v/v) extracts from the endophyte were tested for antimicrobial and antioxidant activity on a total of 7 bacterial species (3 Gram-positive and 4 Gram-negative) using the standard Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) protocol and Quantitative Radical Scavenging activity using the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, respectively. The MICs were recorded at 250 μg/mL for B. subtilis ATCC 19659, B. cereus ATCC 1076, E. coli ATCC1053, and 62.5 μg/mL for K. oxytoca ATCC 13182 and M. smegmatis ATCC 21293, while an IC50 of 5.65 μg/mL was recorded with the DPPH assay. Qualitative phytochemical analysis was positive for alkaloids, flavonoids, and steroids. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed the presence of 9-octadecene, 2,4-dinitrophenyl acetate, and 2(5H)-furanone, which have been previously reported for the targeted activities. M. radiotolerans MAMP 4754 tested positive for antimicrobial and antioxidant activity and this is linked to the production of plant-derived secondary metabolites by this strain.

Background: Stilbene phytalexis (1,2-diphenyloethylen) and benzamide are beneficial for human health. To increase the stilbene ring activity, a new series of its derivatives containing benzamide structure was synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant power. Methods: 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectroscopy, and chromatographic analyses were used to confirm the successful synthesis. The antioxidant properties were determined by the elimination of , HO , DPPH , ABTS+ radicals, total antioxidant status (TAS) and the ferric reducing antioxidant activities (TAC) measurements. Results: Stilbenebenzamide compounds showed a wide spectrum of antioxidant ability, however their total antioxidant power was weaker than those of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), ascorbic acid, and resveratrol. The highest antiradical activity towards and HO was shown by the compounds with structures containing amine group (SBEBA, SBA) ( : 37.7 – 38.0% and 40.8 – 43.5%, HO : 29.8%, 28.7% inhibition, respectively) at1.25 mM concentration. The antiradical power of SBEBA (0.29) in DPPH assay was lower than those of resveratrol (1.83), ascorbic acid (3.63) and BHT (4.09). The TAS values of the synthesized compounds ranged from 152.9±5.3 to 240.2±6.7µM trolox equivalent/gram (TE/g) and were much lower than those of BHT (1304±43.0), reservatrol (1360±29.0) and ascorbic acid (2782±39.7) µM TE/g. Similarly, the TAC values ranging from 29.7±0.9 to 41.5±1.6 µM TE were weaker than that of resveratrol (239.2 ±6.7 µM TE/g). Conclusion: The results suggest that the presence of hydroxyl group in stilbene ring should be considered in further design of stilbenebenzamide compounds to enhance their antioxidant activity.

The aim of this study was to assess, using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant activity of several substances that could be proposed to immediately revert the problems caused by bleaching procedures. The percentage of antioxidant activity (AA%) of 10% ascorbic acid solution (AAcidS), 10% ascorbic acid gel (AAcidG), 10% sodium ascorbate solution (SodAsS), 10% sodium ascorbate gel (SodAsG), 10% sodium bicarbonate (Bicarb), Neutralize® (NE), Desensibilize® (DES), catalase C-40 at 10 mg/mL (CAT), 10% alcohol solution of alpha-tocopherol (VitE), Listerine® (LIS), 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), Croton Lechleri (CL), 10 % aqueous solution of Uncaria Tomentosa (UT), artificial saliva (ArtS) and 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) was assessed in triplicate by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical assay. All substances exhibited antioxidant activity, except for CL. AAcidS, AAcidG and VitE exhibited the highest AA% (p<0.05). On the contrary, CHX, NE, LIS and NaF showed the lowest AA% (p<0.05). In conclusion, AAcidS, AAcidG, SodAsS, SodAsG and VitE presented the highest antioxidant activity among substances tested in this study. The DPPH assay provides an easy and rapid way to evaluate potential antioxidants.

The current investigation is focused to determine antioxidant activities of the leaf extract of Plumbago zeylanica. The leaf extracts were prepared by using multiform solvents with increasing polarity, including as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and Methanol. The antioxidant activities enlisting DPPH assay, hydrogen peroxide assay, reducing power assay and nitric oxide assay method were performed for all extracts. Barring no one, the extracts had shown average to potent antioxidant activity. Uniquely, the ethyl acetate extract and the chloroform extract explicated the utmost antioxidant activity.

Background and Objectives: In this study, three naturally isolated species of microalgae were investigated for their antioxidant activity using DPPH assay and polyphenol contents through Folin-Ciocalteu analysis. Methods: Three different solvents including hexane, ethyl acetate and water, which present different polarities were utilized to extract the bioactive components from three different microalgal strains. Results: The investigated species exhibited considerable amounts of antioxidants (25.88 ± 0.48 µmol Trolox g-1 in Scenedesmus obliquus) and polyphenol compounds (27.14 ± 0.40 mg GAE g-1 in Chlorella vulgaris). The observed correlation coefficient (R2=0.8265) between the two studied parameters confirmed the great contribution of the phenolic compounds in the observed antioxidant activities. Conclusion: The phylogenetics and other bioinformatic tools were confirmed as a useful method for identification of the most prominent species. The obtained data and patents warrant the potentials of naturally isolated microalgal strains for obtaining different antioxidant and polyphenolic bioactive compounds.

Pyrazolines are the most useful heterocyclic moiety in Pharmaceutical and Chemical fields and as the most potential molecules for the design of new chemical entities. Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, pyrazolines and their derivatives showed a variety of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant properties. In the present study, eleven novel ethoxylated pyrazoline derivatives were synthesized by condensing chalcones with electron releasingethoxy group at one end and different electron-donating, electron-withdrawing groups in another end with hydrazine hydrate andalcohol. The compounds synthesized were structural elucidated by their spectroscopic studies. All the compounds synthesized were evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant potential by 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)and hydrogen peroxide free radical scavenging assay methods.Some of these molecules possess moderate to good antioxidant activitywhen compared to standard ascorbic acid. The compound with methoxy group (EH2) exhibits potent antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 9.02 and 9.44µg/ml in DPPH and hydrogen peroxide assay method respectively and the compound with hydroxy group (EH9) also showed potent antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 12.41 and 14.56µg/ml in DPPH and hydrogen peroxide free radical scavengingassay method respectively when compared to standard. The compounds containing electron-donating substituents were found to be good antioxidantswhen compared to standard ascorbic acid.

Lipote (Syzygium polycephaloides (C. B. Rob.) Merr.) is a Philippine endemic tree whose berries have a potential for functional food development. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the maturity stage (unripe, half-ripe or fully ripe) and processing (blanching at 90±5°C for 2 mins and steaming at 105±5°C for 5 mins) on the antioxidant content (total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and total anthocyanin content (TAC)) and antioxidant activity by DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, of lipote flesh and skin (referred herein as flesh) and seeds. Results showed that maturity and processing significantly affect the antioxidant contents and activities of fresh lipote flesh and seeds. Blanched lipote flesh generally had higher TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activities than their unprocessed and steamed counterparts. Blanched unripe flesh had the highest TPC (33.57±0.27 mg gallic acid equivalents [GAE]/g) and antioxidant activity measured by ABTS, FRAP, and DPPH assay (92.31±1.28 mg Trolox equivalents [TE]/g, 123.83±0.86 mg TE/g, and 74.02±0.33 mg TE/g, respectively) while blanched fully ripe flesh had the highest TFC (27.98±0.08 mg quercetin equivalents [QE]/g) and TAC (18.11±0.11 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside equivalents [C3GE]/g). Lipote seeds, especially unripe ones, have appreciable antioxidant contents and antioxidant activity, even greater than that of lipote flesh. Unprocessed unripe seeds had the greatest TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity by DPPH assay (123.56±0.94 mg GAE/g, 111.90±0.14 mg QE/g and 465.89±1.86 mg TE/g, respectively). It is recommended that blanching be used as a processing step to increase the antioxidant content of lipote flesh while lipote seeds should be investigated further for nutraceutical applications due to their high antioxidant properties.
